Like the Boyne, some history flows into the sea

300

You see what happened this week?  The First Minister calls it out (to borrow a phrase), “violence and vandalism and vile anti-Catholic prejudice”.  This gave Police Scotland a responsibility to fall in line, which they did.  That in turn provided cover to journalists to write reflective pieces on why a modern country should be ashamed it retains prejudices like these.

It didn’t used to be like this.  By this stage of any earlier Rangers (old or new) embarrassment, you would be reading about two Celtic fans chanting IRA slogans or dangling an effigy.  Strings would be pulled and the lowest lying Celtic-connected fruit would be plucked and served.  Equivalence in as much time as it takes to sing about the grassy slopes of the Boyne.

Newco/Oldco inevitably deflects and denies, “tiny minority” this, “everyone, anyone” that, you will remember the damage “fans of other clubs” did to Manchester?  It has worked this way since their excesses started to grab headlines in the 70s.

This time, it’s different.  Nicola Sturgeon’s intervention changed the script.  The path from the First Minister, to the police to the journalists who found the freedom to report without fear and intimidation is lined with orange lilies.  Many journos have taken the opportunity, although there are a notable few clearly still imagining themselves doing battle on the aforementioned grassy slopes.

The reaction will probably see an end to George Square takeovers but it is also likely to see trophy parades inhibited, which will affect Celtic more than everyone else put together.  Newco will not change, of course.  From birth, they relied on the lowest common denominator to make the club viable (it is still searching for that quality).  Their values and instincts see them underplay, deflect and deny what the rest of the world sees.

History is either with you or against you.  In the 1980s, it took an hour for Orange Walks to pass through a wee Lanarkshire village like Holytown.  ‘The street’ of my youth was memorably thronged with the drunk and the defecating.  Very few are interested these days.  Like the waters of the Boyne, this particular history will inevitably flow into the sea.

  3. So if we win the league next year, no victory parade, who would have thought that would be the outcome.

Not that we would want to congregate on masse in the middle of Glasgow but the Gallowgate would have done.

Celtic better be ready to re-focus attention where it is due if there are hints of deflection (which I’m sure there will be). We are not half of anything – or at least not half of this particular ‘thing’ – is a good mantra to keep.

  7. Not surprised at the Huns claiming that the Video inside Ipox has been ” Doctored”, but they FAILED to address the deliberate LAW Breaking of Covid Rules in Glasgow……They can NOT Deny that many of their staff broke the Law , UNLESS that ALL the players and staff that were in the Ipox Bar were drinking NON Alcoholic Beers and/or Soft drinks ?

I hope the Cops have a look at the LABELS on the Bottles etc ?

Do you think becos ‘this time it’s different’ this license should be taken up by our C-suite custodians to now use terms like vile anti-Catholic prejudice when it’s meted out to our players, staff, local parishoners etc etc whenever it appears?

I don’t want us to miss an opportunity to ram the nails in the bigotry coffin once and for all.

    I can’t think of one.

As soon as we’re in the dock, It’s “Celtic” that kops for all the prominence and blame, NOT…the fans as an extension……..or some of the fans or even a “Tiny minority” – of course this can be focused as whatever way makes it worse for Celtic and its responsibilities……….

  13. I just wish there was some way to tackle the bbc up here , they are without doubt the most bigoted organisation in Scotland . How have they been allowed to attack Celtic at every turn , how have they been allowed to continually employ mainly ex rangers players on there programmes ( oh aye we know all about bonner) we also know if you call out the big lie on there programmes your hunted like michael Stewart , we also know who is top dog up here and who his support is for , a bigot of the highest order , but surely there is someone above him , this company is funded by the people , we shouldn’t need to Have wall to wall bluenoses thrust on us . Surely we can take this mob on ,

P67, happy to see you referencing the Scottish government without the usual digs, not quite a positive endorsement but “Nicola Sturgeon’s intervention changed the script” is a step in the right direction.

Now if we could get political agreement on the bigotry issue at least from the parties that rely on the huns vote maybe we could move forward in a united fashion?

Will we hear from their leadership today?

It’s only banter after all. Or would the media be aghast at such an abhorrent act of ignorance, prejudice and religious bigotry?

Just finished writing a note to my brothers around what we are witnessing and what might play out once the smoke clears.

There is no doubt that there is a changed tone from senior politicians but my take on matters is that there is a deep seated belief in Scotland that one side is as bad as the other – and that is a view held by many reasonable citizens. They have been fed this narrative over many years and whilst it is a distortion of the truth it has been embedded.

Whilst I welcome the changed tone my sense of the matter is that equivalence will rear its head again. That was evidenced in the discussion with Jeanette Findlay last night when the subject quickly turned to IRA singing amongst Celtic fans. Nothing to do with the subject in hand however it betrayed a prevalent mindset. One side as bad as the other.

This equivalence ,if followed through, will inevitably impact Celtic, fan behaviour and attack Celtic’s sense of identity.

  21. Loved Charlie Nick as a gallous player for us, but he’s every bit as much of a nugget as the execrable Big Packy………..

  22. Paul 67,

I we accept blanket bans then ironically we will be affected more than the huns.

If other civilised countries have football celebrations then we should be no different.

Blanket bans only affect the law-abiding, and every other team in the land do not have such a large minority as the huns seem to have.

The authorities, Police Scotland and journalists need to be informed at every turn that this racism has absolutely nothing to do with us. Many of us are on the receiving end.

Officials ‘may never know’ if Rangers gatherings was a ‘superspreader event’ warns Jason Leitch

PUBLIC health officials may “never know” if mass gatherings by Rangers fans in Glasgow will be a “superspreader” event, according to Scotland’s National Clinical Director.

Speaking on the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland programme, Professor Jason Leitch cited the lengthy incubation period of the coronavirus as one of the “challenges” faced when tracing the spread.

He expressed his disappointment at the large-scale gatherings over the weekend, adding that public health teams will “manage” whatever comes from it.

He also said he remained “confident” that we will be celebrating the Euros at Hampden next month but stressed it is “up to all of us” to get the outbreak under control

He also said he remained “confident” that we will be celebrating the Euros at Hampden next month but stressed it is “up to all of us” to get the outbreak under control.

Asked if the Rangers fan gatherings and Home Office protests in Pollokshields would be “superspreaders”, Professor Leitch said: “It’s far too early to tell and we may never know.”

“We have had this challenge throughout the pandemic because we have this incubation period of the virus.

“If it were norovirus and you got it within 12 hours of meeting someone, you’d know where you got it.

“This virus takes seven to ten days to show and 30% of people don’t get symptoms at all, they just get the virus and they can then spread it.

    “So, we may never know.

“However, I can tell you for sure that gatherings don’t make it easier. They don’t make it better.

“So, I’m disappointed to see gatherings at the weekend and we’ll manage whatever comes from it.”

Professor Leitch also told the programme that a decision will be made on Thursday or Friday as to whether East Renfrewshire and other areas with rising cases could be put into tougher lockdown restrictions.

On Friday afternoon, Nicola Sturgeon said that outbreaks in Glasgow and Moray meant they would remain in Level 3 restrictions, with a review in a week, while the rest of mainland Scotland moved to Level 2.
