Lille, Kille and Club 12

215

Thoroughly delighted for Lille on winning Ligue 1 against one of the world’s most prominent petro-dollar clubs.  Lille have a structural commercial income less than Celtic’s, but have traded like a barrow boy for a barren decade since 2011, when they won their first trophies in over half a century.

In 2018, they escaped relegation by a single point; it wasn’t that they did not have talent, but the resources they had were not spread evenly enough to fill a squad.  In 2019, the For Sale signs went up; Lille sold their four most valuable assets for a combined total in excess of €150m.  They rebuilt and a year later finished second behind PSG.

Again, their best assets were sold, two players bringing in €100m; again, they improved.  The margin of victory in this season’s title was the same as the margin they remained in Ligue 1 three years ago, but what a victory.

Celtic’s draw in Lille and win at Celtic Park in this season’s Europa League give an unsatisfactory insight into what might have been for us.  Talent like David Turnbull and Ismaila Soro were vegetating in the stands until being released in the 3-2 win over Lille in Glasgow.  Others could raise their game, for occasions.

Farewell, Kilmarnock, 9 years after their abstention when the SPL voted to invite Sevco Scotland into the Premier League.  10 clubs voted against the proposal, only Killie, and Rangers – who voted to admit Sevco, broke ranks.  Welcome back to the top flight, ‘Club 12’.

The BBC show a Mark Walter documentary on racism tonight.  Walters joined Rangers in the 80s and shamefully had a banana thrown at him at Celtic Park.  ‘The most famous banana in history’ has that status because of its rarity.  It happened, the support self-policed and the incident is still remembered because it was the last incident of note.  Without self-policing, nothing ever changes.

Might be so but in his own words he felt like 4 years was long enough and he was looking for a new challenge.

He’s already got his next job lined up (unlike Celtic who can’t something or other about mismanagement and gross indecency)

BTW I admit I am not from Scotland and actually do not have a big opinion of it. But if you ever watch a programme like House in the Country, which my wife loves, why are towns and villages in Scotland and Ireland usually run down, whilst in England they are quaint and picturesque? I don’t know the answer, but long live Britannia, long may she rule over us. Thank feck the R oF I was in the EU – what a modern advanced country it is today. Imagine if we had been one country since the rebellion. What a super go ahead place to live, instead of one part of it trapped forever looking back and playing one card politics forever. Oh, please!!!

BTW this is still LIsboa Day! Hail Hail the Celts are here.

    Love yah anyway Petec. HH

  16. I was in the jungle that infamous day a “banana” was thrown at Mark Walters, except it wasn’t just one banana, there were many of them.

As a kid I took one with me too. I didn’t throw it but that doesnt make me feel any better. Der Hun were singing, “I’d rather be a darkie than a tim”, ad infinitum. By half time I still had the banana in my hand. There were a group of “Celtic” fans, five or six, in the front left of the Celtic End very noticeable. In their Gorilla outfits they stood out a mile, not withstanding the fact that most other spectators stood a healthy distant apart.

Even though I was in my early teens I never felt so ashamed.

I stood there a while then noticed a Policeman in the Jungle looking at me and the banana I had in my hand. He just shook his head in disgust. I peeled the banana and ate it.

My grandparents, and my parents were racist scum. That didn’t excuse me, I knew deep down it was wrong. (I had learned all about anti Irish racism through my families accounts) I despised racism from well before that day and gradually despised all racists including those in my own family.

I pointed out to my racist parents and grandparents that anti Irish racism and anti Catholic bigotry was no different from being anti black or anti-semite.

I took a right doin for that alright.

In order to look forward and progress, surely we must accurately record the lessons of history.

    It wasn’t just one banana.

I’m eye witness to that. Thanks to Mark Walters bravery at the time and presently, recounting, anti black racism is slowly being eradicated from Scotland.

Perhaps Mark Walters, one day, will help eradicate ant Irish racism and anti Catholic bigotry. That’s for him to decide on reflection. Here he is in full voice, as a Rangers player among his fellow racists and anti Catholic bigots:

*me tae, they blasted horns notwithstanding they were brilliant. Apart fae the result one of the best days I have ever had as a Celtic supporter. Still huvnae watched it since then and contrary tae supporters at the time should IMHO we had prevailed and went tae a replay Feyenoord would have won that tae.

I have watched the game. Had only George Connolly played? Sometimes the best team doesn’t win a game.

In saying that, Feyenoord deserved to punish Jock Steins / Kelly’s arrogance, regardless of how well they played.

I watched a video of Mark Walters being

    Interviewed BLM.

He was talking about the abuse he got at Parkhead from Celtic fans.

In the interview he mentioned a guy with a stall Selling Bananas…… I kid you not.

Anyhoo, heeds still thumpin, need more paracetamol.

  21. Will today bring managerial appointments?

Or will it bring more delays, more half truths? More well intentioned, though ill informed, speculation?

Our competitors continue to strengthen. New managers are being appointed elsewhere.

It really shouldn’t be this difficult.

We finished last season 25 points behind first place. There is a lot of work to do pre season. Have we allowed enough time to get it done?

I’d shamelessly stolen the Gaultier suggestion from Marca, which is so pro Real Madrid, thru even have an ex ref who backs up every decision they get, condemn those though don’t get and justifies why when they should’ve been punished why they didn’t ……

‘But if you ever watch a programme like House in the Country, which my wife loves, why are towns and villages in Scotland and Ireland usually run down, whilst in England they are quaint and picturesque?’

    ###

There’s plenty of shithouse villages in England, and plenty of picturesque chocolate box villages in Scotland (and Wales which you don’t mention , maybe it doesn’t feature in the TV programme your wife likes).

Maybe it’s just that you and your wife prefer England, beauty being in the eye of the beholder and all that. Or maybe you’re just subconsciously preconditioned to think of England as being superior.
