Lions, first treble after 50 years of darkness

408

With the Lisbon Lions ‘acting in concert’, as is often the case in Glasgow football circles these days, I hope Celtic plan to mark the 50th anniversary of another of their achievements this Saturday. The St Johnstone game marks 50 years to the day the Lions won Celtic’s very first treble.

A Bobby Lennox goal won the League Cup against Rangers on 29 October 1966, before two Willie Wallace goals took the Scottish Cup on 29 April 1967. The treble was completed at Ibrox, when Jimmy Johnstone scored twice to secure the point Celtic required.

Given the 50 years that we have enjoyed since that season, it is unimaginable to believe that this was the first occasion Celtic retained the league title for exactly 50 years. Last doing so with a win at Dumbarton on 7 April 1917.

It has been said here often before, but it cannot be overestimated what Jock Stein and the Lions did for Celtic. The European Cup and nine-in-a-row are merely the headlines. The titles are trophies you have enjoyed since are the substance. The story would more resemble that dark half century without retaining a league, without them.  When the club and New Balance launch next season’s strips later today, they homage they will pay to the men of ’67 is fully merited.

Thank you to all who have sponsored me for the Celtic Foundation. I’m running the Stirling Marathon on 21 May. I know there are a million demands on you but all support is appreciated.

  1. RAG Reports today about a ” Motorway Banner” that was allegedly put on display BEFORE we gubbed the Huns last Saturday, in Port Glasgow.

It strikes me as rather odd as to why it has taken so long for the ” Photo” and the “Story” to come out…..I smell a RAT !

Banner makes reference to ex ranger Colin Stein and the 66 who died at Ibrox in 1971.

As I say…something NOT right about how long it has taken for any Hun and/or smsm to put this “story” forward ……unless it’s a set up to discredit Celtic fans ?

    I really DUNNO ?

I will tell you why it took so long.

Our media which boasts of bringing us the news as it happens, is fond of holding stories back until they think it can do most damage.

OK, I could never do the cryptic crosswords.

  8. New strip looks good to me. All Celtic strips look good to me.

In other news, Derek Rae is leaving BT Sports at the end of the season and returning to the USA. I think Scottish football coverage will miss him greatly. One of the best modern commentators there is in football.

  9. On the question of the media’s banner, Port Glasgow has no part of the Motorway running through it. Nor is there a walkway across a road for a banner to be placed on. Methinks some is not so true. Has anyone from the Port seem any such banner?

Why did St Mary’s School in the Calton, close

I was back on Forbes street in May 1999 and it had been leveled then.

Just a vacant lot. I’ve been back lots since; it’s still leveled!

I attended from 1960 to 1966 so it was quite traumatic to see it gone actually.

My Father was with me, he also attended late ’30’s to early ’40’s

    Shame really.

Don’t know why it closed but I would assume not enough kids in the Calton.

And the cost to upkeep would have been not inconsequential.

I believe UEFA want ABBA because apparently whomever goes first has a psychological advantage as statistically they win 60% of the time and not the expected 50%.

  13. Big Jimmy – Quonno…

That banner was on the footpath over the A8 just before the Woodhall roundabout

We passed under it at 8.15am – I noticed it but didn’t have a clue what it was referring to when asked by my wife.

Seeing it today …. now it seemingly has context

    But it was definitely there

  14. CONAIRE,

For obvious reasons I do not what to describe the Banner in great detail, but the “Story and Photo” from the rag evening times, goes on to say that there was also Grafitti on the Wall of an orange ludge some weeks ago in reference to the 66 who died ALSO in Port Glasgow ?

As I say…odd how it has taken NEARLY SIX DAYS for this “Story and Photo” to suddenly emerge, maybe any cqners who live or know folk in Port Glasgow can confirm one way or another ?

  15. Big Jimmy

A photo of the banner was on Twitter on Saturday morning so it seems it was there and CitiBhoy has confirmed it too.

The delay in reporting has just been timed to give it more exposure without other things obscuring it.

The banner is an absolute disgrace btw.

  16. Any photos of the New celtic Goalie Strip ?

Just curious, as an old fashioned centre forward and winger ( faster than Usain Bolt…but not as fast as The Buzzbomb)…I always hated goalies !

  17. Big Jimmy – my guess at the time was some drunk tims who had got the England World Cup year mixed up with our Big Cup year…. I never gave it any other consideration until today’s “story”

  18. I didnae hate ALL Goalies….I liked most of The Celtic wans…..I’ve went right aff Mr P. Bonner in recent times.

The goalies i hated most were the wans who would chop me down, as I was “Dazzling” the bassa’s with my dribbling skills. and in the process of picking my spot…..likewise defenders….especially the Hun wans.

My God…those days were a feckin life time ago……I’m still a good dribbler….but not with a ball sadly !
