Lisbon Lions Legacy

225

Raising money for the needy is the first part of our heritage as Celtic supporters. Once that job is done, you need to ensure it goes to worthy projects. This year is likely to see a new high water mark for your Foundation. As well as the usual badge day, bucket collection, Christmas Appeal and other projects throughout the year, we had the events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions European Cup win.

Celebrations at The Hydro and the Grosvenor Hotel in London not only marked the anniversary in some style, they allowed the Foundation to be more ambitious with their projects.

You and I have discussed many times how seemingly innocuous contemporary events would not take place without that achievement in Lisbon, but it never occurred to me that the work done because of the Lions should bear their name in legacy.

Today, Celtic FC Foundation announced £2m would be paid to Dementia Care for projects run by Alzheimer Scotland: ‘Lions Lunch Breaks’ and ‘Dementia Befrienders’.

Research continues into the effects of heading a football on dementia. The illness has struck the Lions directly; Billy McNeill’s family recently let it be known he has suffered for several years. It is a distressing condition for both suffers and their loved ones. These projects will make daily life more enjoyable for both.

Well done to everyone who put their hand in their pocket this year.

i have often stated that IF Celtic FC were the ones using EBT’s and Side Letters etc etc….that Hun mob would be demanding that ANYONE at Celtic FC involved in not paying The Queens Taxes etc…should be locked up in the Tower of London for Treason !

They would be SCREAMING for us REBELS to be banged up for years.

Only today at PM Questions in Westminster…that dozy PM May asked the house to congratulation the ffeckin Queen and Phil for there Platinium wedding anniversary, and also added….” both Her Majesty and Big Phil have did a great service to this country”…………..is this the same Queen who uses Tax Havens ?

    Paradise Papers anyone ?

just catching up on the AGM updates …. from the updates, it is hard to argue with much of Hen1rck’s post @ 3:07 . sad.

  6. ernie: Just as interviewing an actress going into BBC Scotland is not a suggestion that the BBC were involved.

It might have been seen in a more `suggestive` way had said actress been the most powerful person in the employ of the BBC.

  7. This is how the Daily rectum covered Res 12 at the AGM today.

    “13:20KEY EVENT

    Resolution 12 time…

Yip, Res 12, that old chestnut. Remember? To seek clarification of the SFA’s decision to grant Rangers a licence to play in European football in 2011-12 after their financial meltdown.

Lawyer Michael Nicholson says Celtic have looked to come to a satisfactory agreement between the support and the board.

Supporters’ rep shares his frustration with board with SFA. Says a great chance to restore faith in football governance should be sought.

    Celtic await Compliance Officer”.

    …………..

there you have it, the Daily Rectum view RES 12 ” as that old chestnut” !

    Corrupt reporting…not even corrupt journolism.

    HH

  8. I would like to hear how Auldheid and the others felt about how the Board handled the Res 12 issue at the AGM. I was left feeling disappointed, tbh.

For the rest, it was all feel good stuff. Liked especially that Brendan made a point of how Nir Bitton has been brilliant filling in at CB. I have said already a couple of times that I would be happy if he was played there regularly in the SPFL, as he is the best passer of the ball out of defense that we have. He also reads the game very well, imo.

  9. Congratulations Cowiebhoy and Mrs Cowiebhoy on the birth of your grandchild Jude, the new wee Tim. Best wishes to Jenna and Martin in the hope that they have long years to enjoy life with their wee son.

Incidentally, Cowiebhoy can you not do anything to try to convert those two Morton supporters, Colin and Ross the next time they pass your way?

  16. McIntyre wetting himself on Shortbread , ‘ news of the Celtic AGM coming up…’ , i wonder of he will ask Commons and Maloney about title stripping…?

  17. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Really not getting the thinking behind O’Neill (if there was any). Decent manager, no doubt, but his success at NI was based on having two really good central defenders keeping clean sheets and nicking one at the other end.

What is the one position Scotland DOESN’T have any good players in? Central defence!

We are going to have to play a completely different way. Much more of a possession-based style and accepting we will concede goals so knowing we have to score more.

Ah well. It is the SFA I suppose…..

  18. Congrats to Mr & Mrs Cowiebhoy on becoming grandparents:)))

  21. Very quiet on here, especially after an AGM? Perhaps things are going quite well for our club. I stay away from here a lot nowadays, just have been very busy and can’t be arsed seeing the bickering going on.

Usually after the AGM all sorts of stuff is bandied about, ah well we can always discuss the possible new Scotland manager…..maybe not. CGAF to be honest.

Looking forward to real football returning this weekend, our own Mad Mikel provided the only highlights for me over the international break. Although I will miss the Italians at the World Cup not only do they have the best anthem, they always provide some controversial moments before Germany take the prize again.

Down here in trendy NQ of Manchester, not too many football discussions going on, it’s all music and beard trimming as the subjects for debate amongst the young team down here.

Enjoyed a lovely fish tea in Equi’s Hamilton last night and sat next to a Lisbon Lion ,John Clark no less, he seemed to enjoy his fish tea also.

Not sure if he had the over 60’s special, as I was dining with the good lady it was the first time this year they never offered me the option. She takes years off me obviously. HH

  22. GLASSTWOTHIRDS

    Interesting re O’Neil

Rainjurs strength was always defence Sir Walter and Amoruso Gough Butcher yada, yada but happily its something they didn’t tupe over when Sevco were formed.

McCoist ,Warburton and Caixinha tried to play expansive soccer McKinnes would do the same as he does with Aberdeen and is losing 7-0 to BR.

I hope they get him and not O’Neil.
