Lisbon Lions Legacy

225

Raising money for the needy is the first part of our heritage as Celtic supporters. Once that job is done, you need to ensure it goes to worthy projects. This year is likely to see a new high water mark for your Foundation. As well as the usual badge day, bucket collection, Christmas Appeal and other projects throughout the year, we had the events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions European Cup win.

Celebrations at The Hydro and the Grosvenor Hotel in London not only marked the anniversary in some style, they allowed the Foundation to be more ambitious with their projects.

You and I have discussed many times how seemingly innocuous contemporary events would not take place without that achievement in Lisbon, but it never occurred to me that the work done because of the Lions should bear their name in legacy.

Today, Celtic FC Foundation announced £2m would be paid to Dementia Care for projects run by Alzheimer Scotland: ‘Lions Lunch Breaks’ and ‘Dementia Befrienders’.

Research continues into the effects of heading a football on dementia. The illness has struck the Lions directly; Billy McNeill’s family recently let it be known he has suffered for several years. It is a distressing condition for both suffers and their loved ones. These projects will make daily life more enjoyable for both.

Well done to everyone who put their hand in their pocket this year.

  1. I was at the AGM yesterday, the lady from the Celtic Trust representative was comedy gold, talk about spitting out the dummy, she was complaining about the supporters meetings with the club, moaning about ordinary Celtic supporters who go to them and that is only because they (the Celtic Trust) allowed them too? Not that I didn’t know but they (the CT) do have a very high opinion of themselves, then (this is the funny bit) they said the meetings where just a Q and A and useless, then it was brought up that they where not at the last meeting, but then she got right back up to this mic and put us all in our place by astonishingly tell all and sundry that they haven’t been to the last two meetings, everyone pissed themselves laughing, they honestly do love telling people they exist, there’s only one benefit from joining them, they are never stuck for an away game tickets, ask Jeanette Findlay!

Reading the twitter reports as I couldn’t attend I think it seemed pretty petty of The Trust rep to throw the dummy out of the pram but not being privy to the original set up I can’t comment further .

Glad to see their resolution for disabled access was passed

  3. Yes the resolution for the disabled was a shoe in and rightfully so, my take on the dummy spitting from the CT was that it was their idea to have these metings with club representatives and of course the GB also to attend, I don’t think they wanted any ordinary supporters ( as the lady called them) to be there , and the WE ALLOWED line did not go down to well at all with the rest of the hall, to think you you are better than any other Celtic supporter who goes to Celtic Park because your are in the GB or the CT,? Is taking it a wee bit far, but as I said that’s the way it came across to me and many around me, others may have another take on it, that’s just mine.

    Me neither!

Jim had been suffering from dementia for a while, but hope he is as good as he can be.

  5. BADA BING, 10.42,

Thanks for the link about Jim Brogan.

Great, Great servant to the Hoops and never let Celtic down. I had the privilege of watching Brogey numerous times.

    R.I.P. Jim Brogan.

  6. RIP Jim Brogan,

TD67,anyone on here could have written your take on the Celtic Trust points BEFORE the AGM. PL`s pal “Bobby”certainly enjoyed the Fans Forums as a “good Night oot”and i`ve no doubt they are,but the point i got was that last years AGM agreed these were not to be reduced to mere “talking shops”.

Joe O`Rourke of the CSA made an excellent contribution, particularly the points with regard to Best Fans Award, for while the Lisbon Lions Tifo drew attention to us,it was also the worldwide view on Celtic Fans and their support of the Celtic Family that brought the plaudits.

  7. ” Wish we had five feckin’ Jim Brogans”

Ma Da’ sometime in the 70’s!!!

The Old fella loved Jim as a player and as a man, glad he’s still with us:)

    Hail Hail Mr Brogan

  8. Big talk over here in Éire this morning that MON is considering his options. Personally I’d love to see him and Roy stay on for another campaign. After all they’ve led to last year’s Euro’s and we were one game away from qualifying for the World Cup.

The amount of flak he has taken in the last two days has been over the top and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he walks away but hoping he won’t.

  9. JIM BROGAN

Played in one of my favourite games . A 3-1 humping of the Deady Bears in the autumn of 64 .They were strong favourites ———- Celtic humiliated/ played them off the park .

  10. Jim Brogan, what a guy. Very very sorry to hear of his passing. Almost bought a car from him in the stone age.

I remember the cry, Brogan’s gonna get you .

    Sadly missed

On a quiet night, glimpsed this on Dopymedia and thoght might raise a laugh or two here…

    http://www.rangersfansfightingfund.uk/

+ the comments on the subject…..one of which I’ve copied here….

” I don’t really disagree with the wording.

The club was not and will not be liquidated.

The club was sold out of administration, from the oldco to the newco prior to the oldco being liquidated.

If the club had remained in the OldCo throughout the liquidation process, then we would have went down the airdionians route and would have lost our history.

We retained a continuous economic entity, and therefore are correct in saying the business continued with the history intact.”

    ——————————————————————————————————————————

Yes it’s good to scoff at stuff like this but the sad truth is that this lie is increasingly being peddled as fact and this will continue if we and the other clubs in Scotland allow it. The fact that Sevco are allowed to claim the history of the deidco on the official SPFL website without challenge from ourselves and others is a matter of national disgrace.

If we continue to sweep this under the carpet, it will be written into history that the old Rangers did not die and it won’t be too long before they start to deny they even went into administration.

Like or not our club is party to this by its silence and failure to challenge this lie. At the very least we could only list their honours (?) since 2012 in our club programme the next time we play them. I’m not sure but what was in the programmes when they visited CP last season?

Until this lie is challenged, I will continue to keep my green pound in my pocket. Big deal I hear some of you say but I simply will not support a corrupt and bent game.

    ……………………………..

Like myself mate, I suspect that most on here who were expressing their sadness in relation to the FAKE news of Jim Brogan on this Blog, DID NOT rely on Twitter ?

The first I read of this FAKE news was on this very Blog, and after searching Celtic’s website and Celtic News Now…there was no mention of any news ( Fake or otherwise) on those websites.

Shame on those at that auction who were feckin CHEERING at the price it went for, what a pure mad mental world.
