Little surprise in Ledley moving on

287

I remember the early days of Joe Ledley’s time at Celtic, in particular for defending him with pleas to ‘give him time to settle’.  He did settle into an accomplished midfield player but there should be no surprise he is moving on now.

Joe has managed his career well.  He allowed his Cardiff City contract to expire, making himself available without a transfer fee.  Celtic snapped him up but the leverage the player had, without a contract, was compensated by a top contract.

Is he worth a top contract?  Is he worth pushing the boat out, beyond the current top contract level?  Yes to the first question, perhaps, but no to the second, he sat on the bench when Wanyama and Brown occupied central mid in last season’s Champions League.  Celtic put a contract to him but would have known there was a high possibility it would be rejected, as the player would be able to negotiate a contract in the ever-inflating English Premier League.

If his deal goes through at Crystal Palace he’ll leave with my best wishes, both parties probably made the best decision for their own futures.

Are the guys who are underwhelmed with the signing of Leigh Griffiths the same guys who were underwhelmed by the re-signing of Charlie Mulgrew?

As regards Joe I’ll be sad to see him go but his ambitions, low as they may be, lie elsewhere.

If Joe goes, I wish him well and thank him for his efforts. He came to Celtic when the SPL was not the most attractive prospect. I think he has been a decent player for us scoring against the now defunct team from Govan and in Europe.

In some respects it doesn’t matter what the split is. The Celtic Charity Foundation is a focal and organisational point for charitable donations. Donations that might not occur without it. Surely that’s a good thing.

  6. Good luck to Joe Ledley if he secures the deal, been a good servant and gave some memorable moments, the 2 best being in 2011

That pass to Sammy for the opening goal at Ibrox in January

That goal v the deid team that took us top of the league in December

  7. kitalba – care not a jot, I firmly believe the name of Celtic is being used for many good causes.

How do you know none of those who contributed to the Celtic charity were part of the board? You don’t? Do you? So if a board member makes a charitable contribution from his wages……in a roundabout sort of way the “club” has contributed?

I am happy with what the club does, could they do more? Probably but so could we all.

In terms of charity and Celtic – we are seen in a good light regardless of what you think.

  9. Another wee rumour coming in…

I’m hearing Aron johansson will be in glasgow at 3.30 today from Amsterdam to have a medical with the club. It is believed that both clubs have agrees a £2.6 million (€3million) with add-ons deal and he will sign a 3 and a half year contract. Hopefully this is true.

  10. kitalba…did you also read this bit? Or is it selective reading you do:

Victor said: “Celtic’s traditions of charity and community are an inspiration and since joining, more and more I have learned of the many ways the club make a difference.

“This is a wonderful example of the club and the fans working together for a real positive reason.

“It is very humbling to see children in my own country receiving such support and I thank everyone involved.”

  11. I appreciate that New Rangers are having problems keeping players, and I sympathise. Has anyone ever suggested to them that they offer players Employment Benefit Trust schemes? After all, they are completely legal….

  12. Joe doesnt want to go.

He dont seem to be busting his gut to be a Palace player.

    He’s still at Lennoxtown.

  13. He been ti to many CT meetings, and they’ve fried ez brain, am telling you this man is away wi it, no harm ti yi mate, but you need to go into a dark room an hiv a wee lye doon, yer dugs away ti Hamilton.

  14. paolosboots FC before PLC on

Len Brennan, thanks for all your hard work need I say it “the Jim White” of CQN (no offence meant mate!) what was interesting is with Watt on loan we have 6 promising youngsters getting a chance of first team football at different levels & can only improve them.

Kitalba you rightly talk about lack ethos in relation to the PLC the only place you will find ethos & ethics in relation to our FC is on CQN which epitomizes the celtic family especially when you look at the kitchen for Schoolchildren in Malawi & previous good works.

In relation to LG i haven’t warmed to him but that was the same of Lenny when he became manager, Lenny won me over & there is just something about Griffiths that kind of “gallas streak” that might make him a success.

  15. If Ledley goes it will be with my best wishes. It will free up some wages and capital to re-invest in the squad as well as allowing opportunities to some of our young players to impress.

We will need to start making moves for the summer window towards the tail end of our season. for the CL qualifiers we still need:

    Cover at Left Back

    Cover at Centre Back

    A first Choice Calibre Striker

    A Playmaker

I’d be happy with Djurdic and Johanssen for the final two…

I agree totally, if an unfortunate in need is aided it matters not a jot where that aid comes from, but if credit is to be extended, then let it be so to those who put out, and let’s stop the pretence.

Does he not want to go, or does he not want to go until the summer where he can get paid as much as possible (similar to what he did coming to Celtic)?

  25. The only problem I have with Ledley leaving is the fee. He is worth so much more than 700K. But his departure is mitigated by the arrival of Johanson, who looks the ideal replacement and is also left-footed (a coincidence? Doubt it).

Plus, the signing of Griffiths has made us a better team. Simples.

  26. Fin75:

Yes, too, I agree with you, we are all Celtic, but when you have food banks in Glasgow in 2014 and employees of Celtic are picking up circa I million in bonuses on top of their wages and their sweet dividends, I just don’t think that is compassionately Celtic. How much do those employees of Celtic who are picking up such sums of money contributing to charitable causes, well I don’t know the answer to that, just like I could not tell you how much those who are employed by Celtic PLC and existing on less than the living wage without circa I million pound bonuses and high salary and dividends are donating either. Porridge isn’t cheap after all.
