Livi pitch an appropriate white flag

457

Before we get into the meat of the matter, I would like to record how impactful Kristoffer Ajer is at full back.  He is not a full back, of course, this is not even his second best position, but he can get beyond his man and send a dangerous cross into the heart of the penalty box.  This marks him as unique in our full back options.  Of the many lessons from the season, let one be that we need better full backs at both sides of the field.

Conceding fouls inside your own half is not considered a capital crime at other clubs, so we should temper our annoyance at Shane Duffy (or the absent, but often guilty, Diego Laxalt), but we all know Celtic cannot defend set-pieces.  At Livingston’s first goal, it was the otherwise excellent Kris Ajer who failed to track his man, not Nir Bitton, who stuck like glue to his opponent but was blamed by a scapegoat seeking Sky co-commentator.

When Livingston breached the Celtic defence for a second time, I was not concerned, as we were playing well and I expected a 30-minute onslaught towards the Livingston goal.  Instead, Livingston consolidated their position, aided by four substitutions in 17 minutes either side of the goal, which finished Celtic as a threat.  Credit to David Martindale.

Scott Brown’s ‘Get stuck into them’ cameo might have worked in a different era.  We have seen similar flailing arms go completely unpunished against us, but it was the last thing we needed last night.  By full time, the Livingston pitch resembled a very appropriate white flag.

So how did Eddie Howe take a team from League One to the Premiership without making them better?

  2. TT has a far superior record than EH at bringing young players through and selling at a massive profit

That’s why he got to the top and is the level of manager we should be going for.

Eddie Howe did being a team up but also took them down after 5 years of epl money.

Another yes man, but if he comes, I will get right behind him and if he doesn’t, I wont lose sleep.

I said months ago I want a continental manager as the English league is over priced and not the market we should be anywhere near.

    That’s my reasoning.

PITYMEVIN – interesting, although I’m not 100% sure how best to interpret that. Is it looking at the money spent on players vs market value?

Certainly TT’s figures look great if that’s the comparison – maybe just being at PSG makes a player more expensive? Don’t know – quite difficult to weigh up.

As I say, though – I think the profile sounds right – even if Howe doesn’t actually match his own profile :-)))

Apologies for my comments which weren’t meant as a personal insult but certainly reads as such.

I was only 4 in 78 but I was at the 4-4 Ibrox game and I remember, fleck, poodle Heid McPherson, Hugh Burns and co, they were pretty honking back then.

Now whatever your personal opinion on Sevco is now they have dropped 6 points in 24 matches and are unbeaten.

Build for next season, sort our own house out and we may get away with just one season of pain.

  5. Geebee, what are you talking about, CL final last year.

    Yes a complete failure.

Out our budget, yes if you say so, and now why would that be? Because hes good maybe?

BR would have been out our budget as well then , but he still came.

What’s the big deal with eddie Howe anyway, because he worked in the epl .

Stop with the English managers the market is over valued and we cant compete with the efl championship FFS in terms of financing.

We need to be on the continent

  6. PITYMEVIN on 21ST JANUARY 2021 10:55 PM

Overpriced market? Tuchel was earning £7.5m a year. We won’t pay that….and I won’t want to pay it for a man who has failed in his last two jobs.

I think people forget how small Bournemouth are – a tiny club whose every year in the top-flight was seen as a success.

Did you mind getting a sacked manager from the “over-priced” market when we took on Rodgers?

  7. Howe maybe ,with Tindall I doubt it,the gossip is he was not happy with him stepping into his shoes

  8. I have no clue who our next manager-or should I say coach is going to be, unless there are serious changes at the top it’s gonna be the same old, we NEED a Director of Football, not an accountant who thinks he is a DoF, this is the most important factor IMO, we NEED this.

What I do know and have said for far too long that Lenny has overstayed his welcome, it should have happend the day we got papped out by Culj, in saying that he shouldn’t have gotten the job in the first place tho, that is the feeling of the majority of the support if folks care to look around, I was all for Marcus Rose the last time we were in the hunt, he has done superb in Germany against serious money, now, there are plenty of quality up and coming forward think coaches out there, lot’s of them, many to be had for very little money Ronnie D anyone, he wasn’t the worst, he just didn’t have the backing from above to implement his ideas, not all of them good I grant you, but you get my gist, and before you all say the football was shite, it wasn’t, when they played they played, pity that more than half the players resented and rebelled against him, and they did as well you all know.

    B78

For a man as smart as you are, surely you must see that there are changes needed at the top FFS, everyone gets stale at some point, trust me I know all about that.

  9. PITYMEVIN on 21ST JANUARY 2021 11:02 PM

Yes, he got to the final but did he win it? That was the remit with the budget the club had. He was sacked after not convincing the club’s owners.

But you contradict yourself. He’s paid well so he must be good but prior to that you talk about over-hyped managers. Can’t have it both ways.

  10. I’m not sure I’d want Eddie Howe either. Three reasons for it:

    1) I’m not sure he’s all that good in the transfer market. He funnelled the best part of £40m to Liverpool for Solanke and Ibe, neither of whom really delivered;

    2) his Bournemouth teams couldn’t defend – their goals against stats were atrocious; and

    3) this is the most important one – at Bournemouth he effectively had his own way. He’d no doubt want the same with us, which means when he eventually left his folk would too! We’d be where we were when Rodgers left – our entire football operation gutted! Bournemouth got lucky that Tindall stayed to be manager so the rest did too, which adds further doubt – Howe would need to build himself a new back room team. I’d much rather have a DoF model to put all that in place for the club and the manager can bring his own people to work with ours rather than replacing them (or not) each time the manager leaves. Like they have at Brentford, Dortmund, Man City, etc.

In terms of who I’d go for as coach, I think there’s a number of options out there – Philipe Clement at Brugge for instance – won the league for Genk, moved to Brugge where he won it again and now on course (9 points clear) for his own personal 3 in a row. He used to play for Coventry so probably speaks decent English and probably wants to manage down there so we’d offer a decent stepping stone option – success at Celtic would raise his profile down there (especially after this year) more than success in Belgium will!

  11. BGFC, check out what he did at Dortmund and the players he brought through.

Howe no, as I’m calling him from now on.

Has been no where near as successful as TT.

But on the same page that I posted if you go on the PSG season before he had a deficit of €8 million three years later they are in the CL final.

He built the team and we should jump in feet first. Yes we might have to pay him £4/5 million a year but we wont regret it, we should be demanding it. We are Celtic and the sponsorship deal should pay his wages.

We must demand better as supporter other wise it’s just the same old story.

And now I’m being told we cant afford mangers, since when?

  14. Geebee, I only think the English press had hyped Howe no.

Because no other league is anywhere near as good if you believe all you read.

As spidey said his record is not that good, have you got a bet on?

Told you not that fussed either way, but I still think TT is the calibre of manager we should be demanding and not someone who shops at harrods when we can only afford continental aldi’s.

    England is over priced

  17. Phil Hammond is our head of football operations.

Pitymevin – he hasn’t really been a manager long – stint at a small team, 2 years at Genk and second year at Brugge (though was a scout and assistant for a bit) so think we’d also need someone to cover the youth system (which really needs a revamp), medical department, sports science, scouting, etc as well as him. He probably has good contacts though. Here’s a link to a tactical analysis on his team last year (no idea how accurate it is:

We’d probably need to wait until summer for him though :-(

  21. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Spidey101/Pitymevin/guys – do any of you think PL / DD would have the foresight to consider any of the people mentioned?

    I think no chance.

Since WGS left, there has been little imagination, and seemingly no strategic forward thinking

BR – given the job due to being a Celtic man – seemingly only given the post as a reaction to DD’s nose being put out of joint

NL – given the job due to being a Celtic man – twice – both as a knee-jerk emergency reaction to sudden departures

TM – given the job due to being a Celtic man

RD – given the job due to DD/PL fall out about trying land a Celtic man – seemingly a result of an ar5e up involving DD / PL / Roy Keane

I don’t think being a Celtic man should rule anyone out – but it is not high up the list of qualities we need to look at.

Still no need for the abuse though, my only problem with lenny was that he never called out the cheating refs when we were winning. Ernie Lynch, Salve salve;- If you are still about, I enjoyed your ripost however, I do not think you have factored in the state of Scottish football when crowds will finally be allowed back. For the vast majority of survivors it will be a struggle to put a team on the park. If Dermott retains his shareholding he will have to put substantial sums of money into it in order to clear the debt and be able to field a team, either his own or by some other means and when you take into account the state the league is liable to be in, it does not present an attractive proposition.

When you add into the mix the negative effect of Brexit on an already hollowed out economy it is an even more unattractive look. Then you have the cherry on top of the crumbling economic cake viz the possiblity of Scotland separating from the UK. These things all coalesced within a short time frame, which is why I think Dermott has decided to sell. To wit and in short there is no money to be made in such a market.

Pitymevin – I agree re: Celtic men (unless there are any brilliant Dutch, Belgian or German raging Tims out there in the big bad world of European football).

We need to look beyond the parochial focus we have had if we are going to recover and grow. Evidence of a strategy that has as its objective developing us into a consistently competitive European club is what we need, and appropriate tactical decisions and structural changes to deliver that strategy.

Irritating thing is that almost guarantees domestic success as a by-product anyway – that lack of vision and strategic commitment to grow has been the singularly most frustrating factor of the current Board’s limited tenure.

Been almost zero evidence of real vision for many years – probably since Tommy Burns was over in Amsterdam to study the Ajax model at that time. Our ‘strategy’, for what it is, has been strictly limited to ‘buy low – sell high’.

Strange, but it is so frustrating to think about the opportunities we have squandered in what has been a historical second 9-in-a-row period.

Who knows, just not for me and I’ve been getting shot down for months on here every time I mentioned a continental manager. I think we need to move abroad as I’ve said before we cant afford English players and therefore dont see the point in appointing an english manager.

  30. Apart from Deila, who was the cheapest manager we could have got, or Jaansen, or Venglos, all cheap options, do you think the board will go for a continental whose stock is on the rise and would cost real money? Do you think a decent Continental manager, whose stock is high would come to the backwater that the Scottish League is? Do you think there’s one out there that wouldn’t rather have a pop at the yellow brick road of the English Premiership who would come to us? And if there was, would his stock rise with us?

Of course Tuchel or the likes would be great. PSG to Celtic. Offer him £10m per annum. Still no chance. Eddie Howe is good AND much more realistic
