Lock up game’s tax deviants

887

The football industry is busy with its twice-a-year transfer jamboree this week but there will scarcely be a player, manager or executive in the country who isn’t daily checking on Harry Redknapp’s on-going court case into his alleged tax arrangements.

Harry, of course, is one of the game’s popular figures, everyone likes him, including me, but his evidence yesterday, that he’s been told “The problem with you is you’re named Harry and you have a cockney accent”, will have the nation pondering if he’s another victim of the systemic prejudice against white, wealthy, indigenous-named, senior and successful people from London.  There must surely be a support group he can join.

I’m sure Harry’s innocence will be established but the law and tax authorities are right to pursue any doubt that exists in the running of the game, without fear or favour.  Where appropriate, pursue the guilty through criminal, not just civil, courts.  Only then will the innocent be sure of a level playing field. Lock ‘Em Up, as a Cockney may observe.

VP- Benny was of course a character in the much missed soap “Crossroads”. If the hun soap opera was played out in a Crossroads stylee,Sandy Richardson could play Sir Minty,David Hunter could be Duffield,Adam Chance(r) could be MMB,Shughie McPhee could be Mintys boy in charge of catering, loads more to follow,Meg Mortimer could be Jack Irvine…..

You’re taking it too far now sir! ………….. bordering on the offensive!

I once watched an episode of Cross roads when one of the charachers asked wee Shughie McPhee what his fondest memory was. As Shughie stirred a bowl of food mix, he replied dreamily ” Ah that was the 25th May, 1967″.

When asked the significance of the date, Shughie replied ” Ah that was when Glasgow Celtic won the European Cup. The Lisbon Lions.”

    Shughie McPhee – A legned!

  2. Crossroads….Crossroads?……many an adolescent dream did I have over MISS DIANE………mmmmmmmmm

Sorry to take so long to get back to you – had to do a bit of work but it won’t happen again!

Many people are not aware of how the most serious cases are prosecuted in Scotland. A High Court prosecutor is an Advocate-Depute. Many of these people are civil practitioners who wouldn’t know the criminal law from lentil soup. They are paid a vastly reduced sum to prosecute – at that time it was “only” about 70K. The reason they wish to prosecute crime for a while is that they have ambitions to become judges.

The A-D in the case we are talking about is now a judge, having been appointed not long after he prosecuted the Laurieston Bar murder. His reward for abject incompetence. Other counsel involved in the case were utterly astounded by the sheer ineptitude of the man throughout proceedings and, as you say, his failure to call a number of eye-witnesses who were able to identify and speak to events.

Cold comfort to the man’s family. I used to go in there for a pint after work – great family-run place.

The unfortunate thing is that this case is unlikely to be covered by the double jeopardy legislation as all of the evidence not led was freely available and, indeed, waiting in a room across the corridor from the trial court.

  4. Ah Crossroads – nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.

The Government even named VAT after one of the characters – Vengeance of Amy Turtle. I wonder what part she would play in the Ibrox saga – tea lady?

  6. Sir Roger Casement…

A list of those who declined an honour between 1951 and 1999, and who have since died, has been published for the first time.

Until now, the information was so secret it was not included in official papers released under the 30-year rule.

Honours have sometimes been forfeited when a recipient was convicted of a criminal offence.

That list includes Irish-born colonial officer Roger Casement, who was convicted of treason for aiding those involved in Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising and executed.

  7. Shughie McPhee was played by Angus Lennie (now there’s a hint as to what team he may have supported). Angus also appeared in The Great Escape as the wee Scottish guy who got solitary confinement at the same time as Steve McQueen. (separate cells)

His mate gets up and head butts him saying

Wuillie for hecks sake a think yer needles stuck….

  9. We might need another striker after all…

St Johnstone are hoping to sign Celtic striker James Keatings on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old was a prolific scorer for Celtic’s u-19 side last season until he suffered a cruciate ligament injury at the start of April.

Keats wasn’t expected to be back in action until March but returned to play for the Celtic development squad before Christmas and scored twice in a bounce game against St Johnstone earlier this month.

The Perth side have been long term admirers of the striker with new boss Steve Lomas keen to add to his striking options aware that Francisco Sandaza could be sold before the transfer window closes.

With no formal reserve league Celtic are keen to see how Keatings copes with regular first team football.

Its fair to say it killed his parents and devestated the family. I grew up with them and we share the same relations even though we are not related ourselves.

I lived at home in Clarkston at the time or had recently left. I think the boy’s family lived down the road. My mother told me of their devastation on a number of occasions. She heard through neighbours. The family was very well thought of. The death was as pointless and needless as it gets.

I have to say I love him. He is total entertainment value. Any game he is involved in is worth watching for him alone.

I love that he gives money to charitable cases. Some of the other stuff (kicking fellow professionals on the head) cannot be condoned but he is a total character and the game of football needs and loves characters. If he played for Celtic he would be a LEGEND – as opposed to a legned.

I live near The Burnbrae. I’ll pop down and see if there’s any suspicious looking chracters around.

  16. The problem with the Jan transfer window is that, whilst everyone knows where the deficits in their own squads are, only a total nutcase would be prepared to sell decent squad players for anything less than silly money.

Panic buying rarely succeeds, the GEF is whistling up his ain close if he thinks that anyone is prepared to part with £9M for Jelly. At best he’s worth £3M. In fact, his recent form looks more like two bob and an Embassy coupon.

What does the GEF hope to do with the bangers and mash he gets? He ain’t giving it to Fat Boab and Soapy Soutar to invest, maybe he needs it for somebody’s dundy money!

  17. Chris only worked there, it was owned by James Clancy. I’m not sure if he still owns it though.

  18. Afternoon folks, haven’t read back yet so apologies if the list below has already been posted.
