Longmuir and the Newco job

742

Scottish Football League chief executive, David Longmuir, emerged from the shambles that the game’s administrators got themselves into last year with a remarkably solid relationship with the SFL’s member clubs, indeed, he has been singled out for high praise from the Newco-club.

The flow of sentiment reversed after he wrote to member clubs suggesting Celtic and Newco-Rangers enter ‘colt’ clubs in the Third Division.  This bizarre suggestion was justified on the basis that if Celtic and Rangers join another league, while leaving the rest of the leading clubs behind, their colt teams would continue to bring interest and revenue to the game.

Mr Longmuir seems to have missed the fact that in the event any of the above comes to pass, the departure of Celtic and Newco-Rangers would then create an opportunity for colt clubs to be considered.  Their inclusion now is unnecessary, especially when Newco could potentially enter administration next season, lose players, suffer the mandatory 25 point penalty and be relegated into the bottom division with their colt players, who presumably would also suffer administration-related penalties.

Speculation that Mr Longmuir is taking care of current business until he is ready to move to Newco is becoming hard to ignore.  Newco need to get themselves out of the bottom league first, though.  The colts team idea is certain to be rejected, the question will not even reach the SPL or Celtic.  The 12-12-10-10 idea favoured by Newco is looking an increasingly hard sell, with 12-12-18 more likely.  Mr Longmuir better look after the interests of all his member clubs if he wants to hang on long enough to move straight to Newco. If he loses his ability to be a dealmaker I’m not sure what he can offer an aspiring £100m company.

Football is seldom played on a higher plane than we witnessed from the Camp Nou last night.  Barcelona, until recently undisputedly regarded as the best team in the world, were up against it.  With a league win assured their form stuttered and they had to become the first team in Champions League history to overcome a 2-0 first leg defeat.

They delivered, as did their most precocious talent, but there was a hugely important lesson to be learned from the game.

Milan are out of Europe because they made preventable mistakes which Celtic didn’t make, home or away, against Barcelona.  Even at this level, the team which makes fewest preventable mistakes progresses.

Milan and, after Juventus, Celtic, can spend the remainder of the season pondering the value of putting laces through the ball.  Barcelona, of course, are fabulous, but the question remains, can they do it at home against Annan Athletic?  I’m not so sure.

  4. Bayern have been brilliant all season until the last few games. Maybe they are going off the boil.

Decent score for the Gooners though and that should deflect some of the criticism that usually follows an Arsenal failure.

  5. Boys guild fitba ! Ooofffttt ! That takes me back ! Played for St Bartholomews in John Thompson final at Rosebury getting pumpt 3-1 by local rivals Maggies in the final. Remember tough outfits St Roberts St Marys and St Francis but the dirtiest shower on Gods good earth had to be St Judes Bar L ! Worse than Racing Club lol lol !

  7. That reminded me of the game at Celtic Park after we had beaten Ajax 1-3. Bayern seemed in two minds about how to approach it.

  8. Bayern have mentality issues. Last kick losses to English teams in champs league will have loomed large tonight.

Bayern will be close to winning this trophy.

Played for St Flannans BG from 1973 to 1977 approx winning the Glasgow League most years with St Francis the biggest challengers in the early years and St Rochs in the latest years. Some players went senior , most junior in that team.

Your memory is correct on Ian McCall. He is a Dumfries boy and played with Queens Park. His best mate was a St Flannans bhoy and absolute mad tic fan , who is now based in Chicago , and nickname was Gomes. Souness told him to stop hanging out with Goms after a particularly wild nite in pzaz/Charlie Parkers. There is an oldco/hibs program where Ian MCCallls profile page at the question maddest thing ever done he refers to a nupite out with Gomes.

Funny enough a team called “lenzie amateurs” played and included ex seniors such as Derek Hyslop ( who scored against Celtic in a 1 0 win for Jim Clunies team at Celtic Park ) ; he was only good enough for sweeper, quinine who played for bobby Murdochs middlesborough, Liam Kennedy who hit the bar for coventry at Highbury plus a few others. Interestingly enough Ian McCall made an appearance for Lenzie Amateurs, but was subbed at half time due to the effects of the previous nights drink. His replacement was Liam O’Donnell who scored a hat trick ( and Lenny knows him well and insists he is crap) . Liam apart from a criminal Lawyer is another St Flannans BG lad and is fraser wisharts SPFA lawyer an a football agent with guys like aluko , mculloch, under his wing.

  14. The Longmuir Plan is a classic case of deflection imo. He is trying to muddy the water so that the current plan for reconstruction falls by the wayside. By that means, if the deid team get promoted to SFL 2, the likelihood is that they could well be in the top 4 at the end of next season and if reconstruction then goes ahead with 12-12-18, they will thus move up into the 2nd tier. This must be resisted at all costs, even if we have to go ahead with the current imperfect 12-12-18 proposal for next season. To do otherwise will not move the game forward in Scotland. Any refinements necessary can be considered after that.

strangely enough. the zombies are claiming mathiesons were formed in 1872 … unbroken history ;)

  16. Arsenal didnt impress me. They just dragged Bayern down to their own crap level.

Bayern drop down in the favourites list. Barca got to win the thing.

  17. 'crushed nuts?' 'Naw, Layringitis!' on

I can’t understand why anyone would want to work at sevco. Today, for example, Jabba has been briefing his poodles about how cack the sevco scouting system is. The herald and the DR both carried this softly rewritten press release. The implication was that chuckles can’t make a silk purse….there was also the understated assertion that Swally couldn’t pick his nose, let alone a quality footballer.

Chuckles, via Jabba, is clearly trying to align himself with FF, Swally will eventually work out for himself that he isn’t very good at this managing caper and will take the hint and p1ss off. Chuckles can’t sack him because it would cost too much so he needs Swally to do a WGS and leave with hee-haw.

No chance of chuck doing a ‘….it’s him or me…’ again after he made such a tit of himself the last time!

As the usual suspects continue to trot out jabba’s guff, the MSM continue to repeat the same line (CW, SDM, floating pitches, £25M war chest, £100M turnover, shop-a-mate, pre-contracts), why expect a different outcome?

  18. Bayern will have Ribery back for the next game and he will make a big difference. I think they still have a good chance.

  19. PJ indeed , I gave your brother a ticket for the old firm game that Joe Ledley scored with the header. It was a bit of a wild night after that.

If you remember the reason that I defended Ian McAll it was to highlight that he does not have a bigoted bone in his body. If people could hear the stories of his time at oldco they would understand that.

  20. Just listened to Sky’s last few minutes and summing up. We just don’t figure in their thinking at all.

  21. cky cody

Ian, spent many a night in Border Way, loved ma Maw’s soup, and as you have said was told by the he Beast to cease his friendship with Gomez,as you say no bigot, hope you have payed the fines you accrued after the game, as I know what sort of entertaiment develops with the Wild Bunch.

  22. BT VISION are trying to get Rio Ferdinand to hang up his boots to be their top pundit, when they start football coverage next season.Sally might walk away and get a gig there. My money is on the permanently injured Michael Owen,if he can fit it between horse racing.

Good start for Arsenal but do we really think Ze Germans won’t score?

Spot on again, that must by why STV keep calling on him.
