Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

Remember the Palestinian flag display last year?

Do you think UEFA were impressed? Or were they about to fine Celtic?

Then the positive reaction from around the globe started.

    Don’t remember a fine.

Nor any ban from the ground!

    Just an observation.

If you dont remember the UEFA fine for the Palestinian display you’ll not remember our response.

UEFA havent forgotten Celtic fans humiliating them.

This is pro quid quo unfolding in front of your very eyes.

    Hi

for those asking about the “significance” of the banners and how anyone would know. You must have missed that the DUP, part of the UK’s coalition government, asked sinn fein to denounce the banners as being disrespectful. This was on the back of sinn fein’s respect campaign. i bet they were delighted that they were placed in that position by a group of sports fans!!

My point is the fine isn’t always a problem, what happened next?

How much positive publicity did the Club benefit from in the aftermath?

  12. That is not to say the GB are in the right on this occasion, they aren’t.

    The pyro has to stop.

The politics have to be cleverer, Wednesday wasn’t.

What I’m looking/hoping for is compromise, from both the club and the GB.

    Sit down and talk.

There are issues to be addressed for both.

Apparently PSG are willing to pay Neymar almost a £ million a week, on top of a £200 million transfer fee (although, with the goal he scored tonight, both of those numbers could go higher).

Doesn’t justify our Board selling our clubs integrity for money, but it does, I think, explain it. So much money required to compete, but also so much money earned for succesful teams. Money becomes the be-all and end-all.

Sorry for the late response duty called.

You mention ” The problem with the Green Brigade area, and one that the Safe Standing zone had exacerbated, is that a lot of people who don’t belong in that section move to that section during games. That, in itself, violates HSE regs. Just those extra bodies. That alone could have a stand shut.”

The Plc Statement contradicts that interpretation,

“The safe standing area of the stadium had been working very well until the final game of last season against Hearts, when large numbers of flares were smuggled into and set off under banners within the Green Brigade section.”

As others have highlighted the Plc Statement leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Why if the Safety Cert was in such jeopardy were the identifiable members of the GB not hauled in prior to the sale of SBs and read the Riot Act? The evidence was there of alarms being activated and the Match Controller/referee considering halting the game.

Why did the Board keep these facts secret?

I can understand that you obviously can’t publish unsubstantiated concerns about risk to the Safety Cert.

I have to confess that I don’t like the tone of…

” it should be easy enough to resolve; one surgical strike and it’s done.”

This is young Celtic supporters we are talking about here, who have followed the club and created some kind of an atmosphere (while 30,000 punters stayed away).

It’s a pity that the Plc and their Security Advisors are incapable of Surgical Strikes when it comes to Sevco violence or years of cheating by Rangers or the authorities.

    _____________________________________________________________________

    TD67,

So politics on banners is okay for Sevco games and not UEFA games?

(Right proudly high over Dublin Town)’ They hung out the flag of war’. Do you remember that one which must have also been sneaked in up someone’s juke?

I’d say there is a lot of pressure to ‘surgically strike’ the GB from the Black Arts within Police Scotland and the authorities.

That’s bollocks, which I suspect you know.

If they are a closed group, they go against every principle Celtic was founded on and every principle we stand for.

No organisation worth its salt hides away like this. fear of police harassment is no excuse.

So I should sit back and let the ‘original members ‘ get a stand shut and misrepresent my views as a Celtic fan? Not a chance.

Not a go at you mate, thanks for responding, but this is a ludicrous situation. Roughly a hundred guys teamed up in 2006 and cause all this shit and we all must step back because they are in some way entitled to do it? Really?

If they have balls, open the group and let people join. Show some bravery and democracy. Accept challenge and debate. UTLR my arse.
