Looking the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye

544

It has been an emotionally charged week for the players and focus around the club will be on weighty matters of history, of what we are all about. You can be sure, however, that Derek McInnes and his Aberdeen players have only one thing on their minds.

Aberdeen can win the Scottish Cup on Saturday. They need to play at their very best, and will need Celtic to perform as they did earlier in the competition against St Mirren, but 90 minutes passes quickly at Hampden, and you and I both know to take nothing for granted.

No one is going to drink in the celebrations of 1967 more than me, but we have won only two trebles since then. The current team deserve every inch of preparation possible. They are already one of the great Celtic teams, with an undefeated treble they can look the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye.

CQN presents Lisbon Lions and wives, Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club, Friday 26 May 2017

The Lions were paraded on a coal lorry when they reached Celtic Park on 26 May 1967.  We have a coal lorry, we have the Lions. This will be an incredible event.  There’s also a live band.

Admission by ticket only, get yours here.  They will be posted until tomorrow or collected at the door thereafter.

I meant to add in my original post, that any granting of permanent status of the safe standing area, will presumably have to involve the approval of the police.

As I say, we sometimes make it easy for those who would rather we didn’t exist.

Just finished chatting to BBC’s David Currie about Resolution 12. He has now taken his camernan down to the square to record the Celtic fans who have made the pilgrimage to Lisbon to honour the lions.

  3. Sitting at Frankfurt Airport waiting for my Lisboa flight. Not spotted any other Hoops here but will can’t wait to complete first leg of the pilgrimage. Hail hail Tims everywhere and special thanks to BRTH.

After a day keeping the players out of the sun, except Joe McBride who couldn’t have played, and who was allowed to make use of the hotel swimming pool, “the Parkhead party were the guests of a former Scottish amateur golf star, Mr Brodie Lennox, who put his tv set at the disposal of the players so they could watch England beat Spain in Madrid. They enjoyed the break from hotel life and Stein was happy because they were still relaxing”. (from “Celtic Triumphant”, Ian Peebles)

While checking back on Celtic Aberdeen cup finals I found this fascinating National Archives video on YouTube.

    https://youtu.be/sh7NzdQtP68

It shows the 1937 Cup Final, 2-1 for the good guys, before a record 147k crowd at Hampden.

And “NO” I don’t have any personal memories of the game.

It has been on the agenda for a couple of weeks; I was going to save it till tomorrow but reckon that there will be too many hangovers in Lisboa tomorrow to appreciate it. Today you are pilgrims; tonight you are dunks; tomorrow you are the suffering!

All day I’ve been haunted by our little exchange and I still can’t fathom why individuals choose to multiple kill and main as thought it were a sacrament. I find the race to be the most horrifically violent and callous alarming and paradoxically terminally narcissistic.

The word that keeps repeating, in conversation and print when carnage involving Muslims are part of the equation is ‘radicalised’.

I can’t comprehend why this word is used and why it seems to only be used exclusively to Islamic related carnage.

    Is it a subtle indoctrination?

Why is it so seldom used in the school shootings that have become so common in the USA?

    Was Thomas Hamilton (Dunblane) radicalised?

    Was Derrick Bird (Cumbria) radicalised?

    Was Michael Ryan (Hungerford) radicalised?

I’m not looking for an argument over semantics (nor most definitely not religion) as opposed seeking an understanding of what it is that motivates such individuals to commit such atrocities. Because to my simple mind, without an understanding of the problem, then how can you ever produce a solution, and I do expand that to include the ‘so called – radicalised – ‘ problem.

  11. All Celtic Pilgrims who are in/travelling to Lisbon have a great and safe time. Keep us guys at home fully informed of the shenanigans over there.

Big thanks to Paul67 for giving us this site and to BRTH in making memorable trip for many Celtic fans.

  15. Tad jealous of all you pilgrims to Lisboa – have a great time and enjoy the celebrations – party like it’s 1967.

Having an anniversary dinner with my long suffering Mrs Gene tonight – 42 years married and still going strong. Will raise a glass of champagne tonight to the Lions of Lisbon.

“We all sing about in the heat of Lisbon, but jeez our Bhoys played in this heat and wiped the floor with Inter. Truly awesome. Forever grateful.”

    *****

“The one pre-final worry in the Celtic camp, I know, was how the Portuguese sun would affect them over ninety minutes, especially as Inter were more accustomed to the heat. They got a pleasant surprise, therefore, when they wakened on the day of the game to find the sky overcast for the first time since their arrival.

In fact, the clouds did not break until the afternoon and the heat around kick-off was not as intense as it had been on previous days”. ( From, “Celtic Triumphant”, Ian Peebles).

    —–

    —–

Still a helluva lot hotter than their last game, 10 days before the final, a league match at Celtic Park v Kilmarnock, 2-0, taking their goal tally in the league to 111 in 34 games, all while winning the treble and reaching the final in Lisbon.

    They couldn’t, could they??

ASMC- These animals have nothing to with the Muslim religion, or any faith IMO.They are disaffected scum, looking to climb aboard any vehicle , which will give them noteriety, or perceived martyrdom. They hide out in Muslim communities, they have to be brave enough to be pro-active , and give these people up.HH

I don’t think it is that simple, why did the (non-Muslim) communities of Hamilton, Byrd and Ryan not give them up prior to their atrocities?

At that time did the team not line up as a 2-3-5 (that rocked Europe) and only in late 69 resort to 4-2-4

I think in all my years following the hoops , and all the wonderful performances ive seen from the team , the football display in the 1967 cup final against aberdeen still sticks out in my mind as the best . It was only 2-0 , but the display of football that day was absolutely superb . Hoping for more of the same on saturday .HH

There are extremists in the Islamic faith who want to literally interpret parts of the Qur’an and use their medieval (and violent) interpretation to bastardise the meaning of their sacred verses. From this they then corrupt and brainwash young (sometimes disaffected, sometimes just a bit stupid) Muslims into thinking that the Western infidels and non-believers are the enemy and that Muslims who do not ascribe to their view of Isalm are apostates.

The belief that the impending appearance of the Imam Mhadi and interpretation of the Hadith of the Twelve Successors will finally lead to the defeat of Rome (Christianity) in Dabiq in Syria drives their (Da’esh/ISIL/ISIS) violent struggle. They see anyone who opposes them as fair game.

Their interpretation of the Great Jihad is that of violent struggle (they ignore the inner Jihad pretty much) and justifies their wreaking of murder and mayhem against their opponents and enemies. They use this radical view to convince these Jihadis to indiscriminately bomb and kill whilst ignoring their Qur’an instruction not to kill the innocents.

I have many good Muslim friends who find this as incomprehensible as you or I; however, the actions of the Knights Templar and The Crusades are examples of how Christianity did pretty much the same thing, albeit many hundreds of years ago and without weapons that could devastate as quickly or widely!
