Looking the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye

544

It has been an emotionally charged week for the players and focus around the club will be on weighty matters of history, of what we are all about. You can be sure, however, that Derek McInnes and his Aberdeen players have only one thing on their minds.

Aberdeen can win the Scottish Cup on Saturday. They need to play at their very best, and will need Celtic to perform as they did earlier in the competition against St Mirren, but 90 minutes passes quickly at Hampden, and you and I both know to take nothing for granted.

No one is going to drink in the celebrations of 1967 more than me, but we have won only two trebles since then. The current team deserve every inch of preparation possible. They are already one of the great Celtic teams, with an undefeated treble they can look the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye.

CQN presents Lisbon Lions and wives, Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club, Friday 26 May 2017

The Lions were paraded on a coal lorry when they reached Celtic Park on 26 May 1967.  We have a coal lorry, we have the Lions. This will be an incredible event.  There’s also a live band.

Admission by ticket only, get yours here.  They will be posted until tomorrow or collected at the door thereafter.

I thought it indicated that as well. AD said he only has two witnesses left.

The fact that Findlay barely questioned today’s witnesses may leave the jury with the impression that their input wasn’t very valuable.

Anyway, the fact that the prosecutions case is drawing to close means that the real fireworks are approaching.

BBC saying that Jock Stein was dismissed from his job as Celtic reserve team manager on account of his religion? Really?

*Despite this success, according to football journalist Archie MacPherson, Stein felt he could not progress further at Celtic due to his Protestant faith; Celtic had only previously appointed Catholics as manager.

That was how the Big Mhan felt and yet he became only the clubs 4th manager 5 years later appointed by the same Board and Chairman that allegedly gave him the sugar lump.

Even in this the 50th anniversary of Scottish football’s finest achievement they can’t hide their hatred for us.

Due to Jock’s success as reserve team manager, he was approached by Dunfermline to become their manager.

He asked Bob Kelly for advice and was assured that it would be a good move for him in his fledgling managerial career.

It is very feasible that Jock would feel that there was a a glass ceiling at Parkhead….as the three previous managers had all been Catholics.

History has proven otherwise and, as a man of great character, he would never have come back had he felt that the club had slighted him five years previously.

    Whyte Trial.

As for Findlay not cross examining prosecution witnesses, I think it was the poet and philosopher, Ronan Keating who said, “You say it best when you say nothing at all”.

So with that and other evidence will Celtic remain publicly silent on the latest slur from the BBC, and just quietly rake in season tickets while basking in the glory of The Invincibles?

  13. BBC lunchtime brief news….Brief interviews and footage of The Troops in Hoops in Lisboa today.

They claim over a thousand Celtic fans have made the Pilgrimage.

They interviewed a wee stunner Celtic Ghirl who has travelled from Australia, but was originally from West Lothian.

  16. I don’t know the Law, but isn’t Findlay’s task to get Whyte off, rather than get anyone else found guilty of anything. Imo, there’s a big difference and will make his task a lot easier, unless he wants to get his own back for possibly perceived injustices done to himself.

  17. ERNIE

    Not good enough IMHO.

Celtic Football Club needs a new strategy juxtaposed with ‘ten in a row’ which the board were happy to assume.

Saying nothing is an accident waiting to happen and has bred mythology.

  18. The BBC article includes a video including direct quote from Jock Stein.

“I was a non-catholic. Sir Robert Kelly thought the I hand gone as far as I would expect to go with a club like Celtic”

It’s not clear if Jock thought religion was part of Sir Roberts reasoning, but that is what he seems to have said. I assume there hasn’t been some unfortunate editing. You can judge for yourself

  20. Gooooooooood Afternoon CQN – live from Lisboa :-)

Welcome to the CQN world Amelia.

Would you believe it – I booked a wee bus transfer from airport to Lisbon centre for 11 of us CQN’rs, just as well a big 55 seater turned up :-))))

And at we departed a wee photo shoot for the Scotsman

    Bloody hot over here

And wheres that BRTH fhella, I want to see him about the room I’m in :-)))

    On a serious note –

if you know anyone who is over at Lisbon outwith CQN, can you please pass on the message that we have a tour of the stadium arranged for between 3 – 5 tomorrow with cyclists and a wee hooped Hillman imp appearing as guests :-)

I honestly pointed this out to over 20 Bhoys in Green and White either on plane or in airport, who were totally unaware.

This is followed by a street party at 6pm on pink street – where bar Malt ( Rua do Carvalho) will have live music performed by the Spirit of 67 ( Scoot from the band jumped on our bus :-))

    Asa preamble to the above

Mass at Basilica of Our Lady of the Martyrs – Rua Garret, will be conducted by one of our very own CQN’rs at 11am

Right BRTH are you in Borges Chiado ? I have that gift for you :-)

Hail Hail, from the heat of Lisbon, the fans came in their thousands ( and that’s just around here)

Agreed, but a way for Findlay to defend his client is to push the blame elsewhere, expose contradictions in witness statements and uncover uncomfortable details of the goings on at Ibrox at the time.

If that was the case, then it probably does represent the mood of the times. Tradition and all that.

This was a round the time of the rumoured wish for a “Boys Guild Eleven”, which never actually happened.

However, it appears that this was accepted by Jock, in the spirit of the times and, contrary to his dealings with friends who turned their back on him when he signed for us, he bore no ill will to Kelly or Celtic.

    Quite the opposite, in fact.

1954 Scottish Cup Final Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen

I have some clear memories of this game although I was a few days short of my 7th birthday. The Scottish Home Service broadcast the last 30 minutes or so of Saturday games.

*believe it or not but I woke up this morning thinking about that game, I was only 6 at the time and we were living in a wee single end with a shared lavvy on the landing before moving up tae the Bonnie Banks, complete with full bathroom, a few months later. I had just made or was getting ready to make my First Holy Communion.

Anyway, my mother had the wireless on and you could hear the roar of the crowd, she said if I listened closely I could hear my da, I thought she meant he was the commentator.

Even though this was our first double in 40 year that’s about all I can remember of it. Later on I would hear my da and uncle who were at the game together and also Mrs TT’s da saying only Sean could have scored that goal as he ran the baw intae the net, but the true hero was the Juggler. Especially tae my da and my mother’s brother as a few years earlier at a juvenile cup game at tynecastle they had helped “carry” an injured Willie fae the field when he was playing for Leslie Hearts.

Make no mistake this was some achievement as the sheep were a very good side, then there were also the Hibbees with their “Famous Five”, Jambos and their “Terrible Trio” and of course the deid team with their “Iron Curtain” defence. Amazingly the first two are renowned for their attacking prowess while they boasted about their “they shall not pass” defence.

There was also East Fife who would win their 3rd LC that season with “Cannonball Charlie Fleming” who beat the Maryhill Magyars who had the “Firhill Flyer” Johnny Mackenzie, uncle of the goalie who saved THAT penalty fae big Frank.

Dundee 2 times winners and Kilmarnock managed by Malky McDonald had contested the LC the year before beating the Hibbees and the deid club respectively in the semis.

The following season the Bully Wee would beat us in the SC Final with the Jambos beating previous winners Motherwell in the LC. Let’s be clear here, Scottish football was in good shape then and would do so even through our honest nine as other teams, including the deid one won trophies, it wasn’t until harry h corbet got his greedy paws on the game that it was ruined.

It would be another 13 years before we achieved it again, ironically beating the sheep, with a Wispy double, now I do remember that. Since then we’ve had a wee bit of heartache against the same club in finals including davidsons climbing another rung in the degree ladder 3 years later, the Bears sending off with 2 future Celts being the main instigators and big Anton’s penalty miss although lets be fair here as Dariusz missed the first one which has been forgotten with the passage of time.

  26. Taken from Glasgow RAG Tomorrow edition,

    DEREK MCINNES

Derek McInnes leads the running to replace Davie Moyes at Sunderland.

  27. The Battered Bunnet on

The quote regarding Jock Stein being told (as Reserve Team Manager) by Bob Kelly that he’d gone as far as he could at the club on account of his religion, is from Jim Conway.

Conway was interviewed for the programme, and an extract from the interview is included in the story on the BBC’s site.

Whether it’s entirely true, not entirely true, or just made up pish can’t be verified. You either take Jim Conway’s word for it or not. I think it’s largely true (factoring for memory) based on what we know subsequently happened.

We know that Stein twice rejected subsequent job offers from Celtic in 1965. The first, to be Assistant to Sean Fallon. The second to be “Co-manager” with Sean Fallon. Kelly wanted Stein, but his board were reluctant on the grounds of what is/was basic prejudice, to have a Protestant as Manager. They wanted Fallon as a sop to the Catholic stuff they thought was important. Stein was having none of it.

Reality is, awkward as these episodes are, those atitudes were extant, the arguments were had, and at Celtic right-mindedness (as I would see it) prevailed: Jock Stein got the job.

I don’t see much basis for spinning it into some kind of BBC lie, as appears to be the sense from what’s posted above. You can read the article and watch Conways interview per the following link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40019642 then make up your own mind.

    Hope that’s not too incendiary.
