Looking the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye

544

It has been an emotionally charged week for the players and focus around the club will be on weighty matters of history, of what we are all about. You can be sure, however, that Derek McInnes and his Aberdeen players have only one thing on their minds.

Aberdeen can win the Scottish Cup on Saturday. They need to play at their very best, and will need Celtic to perform as they did earlier in the competition against St Mirren, but 90 minutes passes quickly at Hampden, and you and I both know to take nothing for granted.

No one is going to drink in the celebrations of 1967 more than me, but we have won only two trebles since then. The current team deserve every inch of preparation possible. They are already one of the great Celtic teams, with an undefeated treble they can look the Lisbon Lions straight in the eye.

CQN presents Lisbon Lions and wives, Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club, Friday 26 May 2017

The Lions were paraded on a coal lorry when they reached Celtic Park on 26 May 1967.  We have a coal lorry, we have the Lions. This will be an incredible event.  There’s also a live band.

Admission by ticket only, get yours here.  They will be posted until tomorrow or collected at the door thereafter.

hope everyone is having a great time in Lisbon!

3million quid for LG … 26 years old, so going into his prime … with 150 goals in 280 top flight games….and under contract for another 4 years, I believe …

    vs.

12 million for Ross McCormack … 30 years old, and on the wane … with 137 goals in 412 senior games…

something doesn’t add up. cant see it. BR isn’t daft.

There was a brief period in the early 60s when people started to think Celtic had adopted a sectarian signing policy, because almost all the squad happened to be Catholics.

Bob Kelly felt obliged to tell the press that there was no truth in the rumours and that they had in fact just signed a young player who wasn’t a Catholic, and for whom they had great hopes. The player was Tommy Gemmell.

  7. Imo, Leigh Griffiths has done exactly what was demanded of him by our manager. He, like all those who were here last season, have improved beyond all recognition. It would be daft, again imo, for Celtic to accept a paltry 3 million for him. He is worth a great, great deal more.

I can’t remember who put up the semi with hearts,sorry:-). But it brought back magic memories,me and my pals were down behind the goal.MAGIC MEMORIES:-))thank you to whoever :-)))

  9. Watching BBC Sxotland (sic) news.

Stream froze as they showed trailer of fans in Lisbon celebrating.

    Question.

Should I leave it frozen with a group of Timalloys in full colour?

Or reconnect stream to see the news item?

  10. Apart from the BBC1 programme at 9.00pm tonight what other Lions programmes are on television this week? Thought I saw a Sean Fallon one advertised??? Many thanks if anyone can advise. Hx2 CB

    Moussa will go soon.

Who would we buy to replace Leigh Griff….and would he score as many goals?

    I have my doubts.

26 yr old prolific goalscorer for 3 Million…..he is worth a lot more imo.

He scores for fun…..left side at ipox, couple of jinks,….blasts one top corner….goes to corner flag to wind huns, smokes a cigar:)

Are you deliberately missing the point??

Leigh will go, he will decide to go, he’s that kind of boy..

Moussa has more goals by the way against the huns..

Leigh can’t pass the ball that’s his main problem under BR.

Gives the other players to much to do more often than not..

I don’t think Leigh will leave this summer but whatever STARRY says is alright with me.£3m definitely seems a little low in comparison to some of the chaff that fetches multi millions down dan saff though.

FAIRHILL…I’m responsible for the 1988 Semi Final link, can never get enough of watching The Maestro.Glad you enjoyed it fhella.

Can anyone do me a great service and link me to BRTH’s post describing his conversation with Portuguese man regarding his memories of 25 May 1967?

  20. £3 mill for The Griff, possibly, personally wouldn’t let him go for less than £7-8 mill, would rather he stayed as we couldn’t buy a striker as good for much much more.

The reason he might go for as little as £3 mill is he failed at Wolves, or didn’t set the heather on fire, this will be remembered down there and used to drive the price down, but if he scores against england next month his price will sky rocket.

But almost 45 years later to the day of the Final, Dynamo legend Baidachny, now 64, has claimed that Rangers accepted responsibility for the trouble, in an interview in a Russian publication. And they even agreed to play a replay of the game in Rome.

*dear God they would have wrecked the Holy City tae. When they denied spraying graffiti in Barca they were then advised that aerosols could not be bought in Spain at the time, must have been the eight people from the Soviet Trade Company then.

Baidachny, who later went on to manage Belarus and Dinamo Minsk, said: “We proposed a replay of the game, on October 3, 1972, in Rome.“And the Scots agreed to it because they were going to lose a lot of money with their European ban.

*I believe that as it’s all about money tae them.

“But as usual politics prevailed. UEFA couldn’t be seen to let the Russians win.

*I recall a friend of my da, a very sensible and educated one tae, saying there was nae way a commie team would ever be allowed tae win in Franco’s Spain.

“Everyone remembers what happened after the game, but people forget the Rangers fans invaded the pitch five times. They invaded the pitch for the first time at 1-0. “Their fans all had mad eyes, it was a scary sight. They tried to set fire to the stadium. They fought with the police and there was casualties.“One of our players, Aleksandr Makhovikov, was absolutely taken out by a Rangers player on the wing. No whistle. From that, Rangers went up and scored.

*I forgot all about that, they couldnae even win that trophy fairly.

Let’s kid on the Leigh story is genuine. If everything is relative then Leeds must value Garner to be worth about 2 packets of Koka noodles.

Imagine, for whatever reason (bouncy castle) you have only one hand available, and any sudden movement causes shooting pains through the other arm.

How do you open a bottle of vodka?

Now, there was no danger of it not getting opened, but I was concerned that asking a stranger passing by would look a wee bit desperate.

Top Tip. Lie the bottle on a towel on the counter. Gently drag a bread knife back and forward across the metal seal, rotate, and repeat.

Then the prize is yours with a few wee wiggles of your good hand.

    Now, football to watch.
