Losing Courts harsh blow for entire league

125

Dundee United did well last season.  Fourth in the league, securing a European qualification spot, is a significant improvement on the previous term’s ninth place, all achieved under new manager, Tam Courts, who was a coach at the club before his appointment.

A year on and United have lost Courts, who is wanted by Rijeka, the side who finished fourth in the Croatian league.  What chance do United have of building a sustainably successful team when they lose their manager after one season when he managed to split Hearts and Motherwell?

So what’s it to us?  Back in the years after Rangers liquidation the subject of what competition Celtic needed was often discussed.  I argued the last thing we needed was a club gambling their existence every season in an attempt to finish ahead of us – they will occasionally win, then they will crash.  The competition Celtic could really do with is from Aberdeen, United Hibs and Hearts.

These are teams who, if they get their act together to the extent that they can out-compete Motherwell, can take points of Celtic home and away, will play expansive football and provide regular competitive games.

The great scourge of these clubs has been the drift of their most promising players south without adequate compensation heading back north.  If they are now losing one-hit-wonder managers to a team fourth in Croatia, you have to wonder if a viable plan for sustained success is even possible.

He’s apparently one of the best ‘water carriers’ in the modern game.

  2. This league of ours is in the throes of Hari Kari.No matter what manager is in charge, the nutjob chairmen are hamstringing them.I said yesterday about St Mirren cutting the away fans, following Dons,Dundee Unt,,Killie, and a few others.wil leave most clubs short of cash.

You have wonder at this mentality. Our games shown on Sky looking as though the place is empty,Sponsors,Advertising, will soon say” Is this worth it”.Will affect these teams even more.Do they care?.

Meanwhile our fans are banned from handing over 30 + quid,to these lunatics.

I put a similar post up last night, and was thinking the same thing about here,”Do they care”,maybe not,England Cricket team were all the rage.At least James Forrest thought it newsworthy today.Nice article.

Really looking forward to the new season ,if kyogo and big Giorgos can stay free from injury I think they could hit between 25-30 goals in all comps .

Hope big Ange keeps his trend up ,of his teams showing the fruition of his work in season 2 .

If we can find someone to shine in the holding midfield role ,I think we will increase the forward threat with our captain marvel further up the field

    Agree

Empty stands look terrible on tv

The smaller clubs have to tell the complainers .

Fine but if our own fans dont step up and fill the seats their getting sold to opposition fans .

Having empty seats in venues when their are people wildly to pay £30 to get in is madness

To be fair, Dundee United cut our allocation for the Scottish Cup tie, selling the stand behind the goals to their own supporters, only to later admit it had been a failure both financially and the bad look of the stand being sparsely populated on live TV.

For the league winning game in May, United reverted to the original plan and sold the stand to Celtic supporters.

PS. No point in getting upset about any of your posts not generating a multitude of responses. Away allocations have been done to death and nobody on here disagrees with your viewpoint. Nothing personal.

  7. Huns always either swoop to sign a player or lose interest in a potential signing,

We struggle to get a signing over the line or we are snubbed by a player we desperately want,

Initial job is to link us to about 20 players then there is plenty of snubbing potential,

Huns always either swoop to sign a player or lose interest in a potential signing…

Surely the vast majority of our support just laugh at these types of headlines now. What’s also hilarious is some of the online articles that regularly start with some sort of bad news for Celtic and end with “Ange will be raging” 😂 Does anyone actually click on this shite.

Your transfer window jargon buster is one of the cqn standards that indicate the arrival of a particular period in the Celtic supporting year.

Others include the angst around the slamming shut of various windows, HT’s posting of the Bobby Sands Diary, the Good Friday wait for the first roll and square sausage of holy Saturday, the poppy debate and, of course, the toasted v roasted cheese conundrum.

These things are the constants that help preserve the sanity of CQNrs everywhere.

    Re the managers comments.

It is crazy the managers roundabout in the SPL ,it needs new blood ,new young inspiring ideas .

Failed managers being appointed time after time.

Why did no club go after Beale for example .?

The English league in its present form , I think since 1992 I may be wrong about the year but an English manager has never won the EPL.

Scottish clubs need to broaden their horizons.

There must be some young progressive foreign managers out there ,or indeed young Scottish guys that deserve a chace HH

Same in England at the bottom end of EPL.

Rotation of guys like Tony Pullis, Sam Allardyce etc who shuffle around teams in trouble as chairmen see them as safe pairs of hands who have a knack for saving teams from relegation.

Years ago you would feel sorry for aa manager losing his job .

With the stories of some of the pay offs lately ,there are probably managers earning more in a year for failing and getting shifted ,than managers being kept in place .

think some down south have made a new career out of getting the boot early

  18. On a much Brighter note, Cameron Signing is massive.

I’m very confident Jota will follow suit Jam&Spoon, his Crossing of the Ba’ was truly excellent the longer the Season went on, He’ll be a hell of a player to get signed up.

All our players Deserve their well earned break especially Callum and his real Refresh time will see him how Good he is in the Champions League, IMO.

  23. Signings/departures

We signed 2 players from last year’s squad and still have not signed the 3rd loanee (i’m in the worried camp, sorry Tom)

We let go 2 first team players we expected to

We let go a home grown player and a ‘Lennon eye’ player. One contract run out?

So, we are possibly down 2 midfielders, attacking and defending and might be down a great winger

Looks like 5 needed on the buy side and possibly 2 more on the sell side

    Interesting trading summer, but…

What is the story with McCarthy? Been asking that for a year😎

  24. IniquitousIV on

Cameron Carter-Vickers started both U.S. international games last week, a 5-0 rout of Grenada and a 1-1 draw away to El Salvador, as Coach Berhalter rotates his squad prior to World Cup selection later this year. He has a chance, although the U.S. is very deep at that position.

  25. Any golf punters out there

Opening the same debate I did on SC, what is this about, huns to continue non participation but get paid, or payment excluded😱

What is this arse doing now:

Neil Doncaster told the SPFL website:

Under the terms of the revised cinch contract, Rangers are no longer required to participate by providing the sponsorship inventory that they have so far not provided, whilst, crucially, the overall income to Scottish football is expected to remain materially unchanged over the original five-year term of the sponsorship. This revised package has now been approved by cinch Premiership Clubs

  28. A lot of the younger prospects seem to have been let go,

Henderson to Hibs, Dembele, Luca Connell, Barry Coffey, Afolabi, Mcinroy, Patterson gone and possibly Shaw, Urhoghide & Scales lined up for the push.

Hope we can find homes for Bolli, Soro & Ajeii.

We need to finalize Jota and hope that we don’t get snubbed left, right & centre as we seek to bring in 5 or 6 oven ready first teamers,
