Losing players on your own terms

894

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

The day after the day before and on reflection Celtic were still shocking yesterday however,I am going to accept it was only a friendly and it was all about getting the players fitness levels up before the first CL qualifyer. It strikes me that European football is so prized by the club and the support that this will be what Ronny is judged on winning the league in Scotland is taken for granted but without European qualification it is of no real value. H.H.

  11. Isis is being allowed to do its thing . US-UK-France-Turkey -Israel-Saudi etc, firstly armed trained them and are happy to let them create their chaos across the middle east. The bombing campaign is a sham. There is no real intention to destroy them. It may be done at a later date when it suits the real forces of darkness.

Glad to see some humanity arrived here last night, just my opinion right enough, but as I said before, we can fix this world.

Was it JFK who said that the “worlds problems were man made, so man should fix them”?

Sounds like a plan to me…

Hello again all you young rebels.

Just back from another great Sunday with the peninsula

hoops, much discussion about Saturdays game and the

concensus was that Dulka looked technically better and

fitter but thats what friendlies are for, getting rid of the

cobwebs and after all they are into their sixth game of

    their season so far.

As regards big Cifti possibly signing for us, well if he’s

knocked Wigan back and is waiting on us then he gets

my vote, believe me we’ve had bigger scoundrels

wearing the hoops and they have delivered.

Me and my wee princess had our anniversary on Saturday,

47 years married , i said ” do you realise honey bunch i

could have done two murders and a great train robbery

and i’d be free by now, she said ” aye yir very funny noo go

and book something special fur us”

So we went on the restaurant tramcar which travels through

the Melbourne tourist spots while your dining and right down

to St Kilda beachfront and back, now i must tell anyone who

is thinking of coming here on a holiday make this your No1

    priority.

Its the old Victorian type car and decor to suit and apart from

a superb 3 course meal, all the alcohol you can drink is all

    included in the price.

We were lucky enough to be on a tram full of young Irish ghirls

one of whom was going back to Kildare in Ireland after 3 years

working in Oz and this was their send off for her, the waiter a bit

of an old character hearing their accents decided he would sing

them Danny Bhoy, i thought , this will be a laugh, but lo and

behold the old guy had a voice like an Italian tenor and he was

superb, obviously in the wrong job.

After copious amounts of champagne the ghirls decided they would

like to sing, but what song? after they heard my wee darling shout to

me ” Michael do you want another whiskey ” ( silly question ) it was

decided, The Fields of Athenry and it was beautiful and i’m not

ashamed to admit there was tears in these auld eyes.

Now to watch the game on Celtic tv think i better get a couple of

matchsticks ready to keep the eyelids open.

    Obfuscation?

    Did you read this?

“That is a harsh word to use about my fellow Celtic supporters, but in fact I`m more concerned about the leaders of the band rather than the choir.”

You seem to be more interested in me than Celtic .

    Why is that?

    ——–

I’m not sure what the first part of your posts really means to be honest.

The second part is a very poor and clearly incorrect comment. You referred to Celtic supporters who sing Rebel songs as ‘parasites’ and I addressed you on that point. How that can lead you to your reply, God only knows macjay.

  25. Rascar, sincere condolences on your Mum’s passing, may she rest in peace. I also see Joe Filippis Haircut sending a message of condolence to BGFC, so again my condolences to another fine CQN’er and to wee George. who’s posts always makes me smile, on their sad loss.
