Losing players on your own terms

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

  1. Forrest still rank rotten.

    Mulgrew still misplacing passes.

Izzy still a liability at the back.

VVD still thinking he is better than he is.

    Ambrose still getting a game.

    Johansen still a stand out.

    Griffiths still a threat.

    Biton still missed when out.

    Commons likewise.

Striker and left back still desperately required.

Ronny will learn much more from this game than the 2-0 mid week victory

Alarm bells ringing for the qualifiers.

Dukla are the standard of team we will have to beat to get into the qualifiers. We can’t ship 5 goals as easy as we have today, otherwise we won’t even make the Europa.

It never seems to amaze me how these teams generally have superior technical ability than us.

One things for sure the back up goalkeeper is nowhere near good enough.

  5. Burgas..,

Initially I was going on the movement and closing down, the goals caught up though.

If VVD goes .. So does any chance of us playing CL football.

    Shambles!

Not ideal to lose 5 goals but a good exercise all the same. Better finding problems now than in the qualifiers. Having said that most of the players will be nowhere near top fitness so wouldn’t worry too much.

I know. My point is some things never change. It’s all about sharpness I don’t give a monkeys about the results at the moment.

I hope Ronny has someone lined up to replace big Virgil when he goes as the ready made replacement is not in the squad.

I’ve been impressed with Fasan in the past but today’s display was poor. As pointed out before Ronny will have learned more from this than from winning at a canter.

  12. I remember a few years ago, and I thought Mo Camara was Messi after watching him mesmerise the opposition in a pre-season friendly. This is about getting players back to match fitness, nothing else. It means absolutely nothing for or against our CL chances.

  13. Game over.

Not confident at all about the second leg. Have to score 3 goals without conceding!

Seriously, good to see a pre season game with lots of goals. I’d say most players today showed they are capable of a first team start. Though I’ve go to say that Scepovic and Stokes were underwhelming.

Interesting to hear Stuart Armstrong talking about players. Seems to have a lot of respect for Fisher’s tough tackling. Rated Fassan too, though he was a bit dodgy with ball at his feet today, almost too casual.

Agree with Professor Green. People say “it’s only a friendly” but it’s a friendly for Dukla as well, and they are the team taking 4, 5, and 6 goals off their opponents.

It’s a wake up call. If we are fortunate enough to get through the next 2 CL rounds, we will meet a better team than Dukla. It may be Bate who have reached the group stages 4 times in 4 years or Ludogerets, who gave Real Madrid and Liverpool trouble, and who are currently touring Russia, playing teams like Zenit and Dynamo Moscow.

As someone said earlier, lots of work to do!

5-3 pre season defeat.. It’s positive as it gives us a need to improve…complacency is as big an enemy as anything..

Also gives RD an excuse to wield the stick early..

    All about fitness just now..

    STs out next week?

Not got mine yet.. Read they’re just being sent out..

Bounce game or not we shouldnt lose 5 goals in a home match Dukla are not in anyway a top European team so it doesnt auger well for the CL qualifyers. Izzi was Izzi he is not a defender big Charlie looked poor and our midfield did not boss the game. There was a lot for Ronny to think about also Griffiths got no real service so a lot of work required.H.H.
