Losing players on your own terms

894

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

The commentary from CTV was one of the highlights. SA nipped in to CQN 11, spoke to him, both Zig and Zag are very comfortable at Celtic

Typical pre season fayre tbh. Dukla a week ahead in prep so that’s my excuse in early and great to see all the kids in what was a nearly full stadium. Great credit to their stewards who were helpful once again. New STs in when I got back which was cool. Onwards HH.

  4. Time for 6o clock Mass…light a wee candle for a big, decent centre forward and a defensive left back, sort of Izzy but six foot two and a brain.

  5. Still think Scott Allan would be a fine addition to our squad. Plays a lovely defence splitting pass and with McGeouch as part of any deal it would probably cost us £500k plus Dylan. Hard to always slate the strikers if the ball is not on a plate for them. Didn’t see the game today went to visit my wee gran who will be 91 in 3 weeks. She is Italian and hails from Naples. Brilliant woman.

Ronny’s comments post match were encouraging. Losing is a learning curve and he learned a lot today. Transfer movement in and out next week I reckon.

If I’m honest I had to re adjust my expectations from the game after about 10 minutes. They were sharper on the ball, seemed to have more men on the park, and could pass infinitely better than us.

After running through all the possible excuses, ie unfamiliar pitch (nope it’s even more unfamiliar to Dukla) or we don’t travel well (nope Dukla are on tour) or we are fielding youngsters against their top men (Nope again) or we are not match fit yet etc etc..I gave up.

I watched several of our top players give the ball away in a costly fashion. Virgil, Dedryck, Stefan, Rogic, Mulgrew, Emilio, Lustig, Brown, Forrest.

I watched our team appear to be the shadow team in a training exercise for long periods and frankly, it could have been a much higher goals conceded tally.

I consoled myself with the original post above and fingers crossed that RD will implement tactical and selection changes to reflect what I think we both saw today.

I know it was only a friendly and only our second game but what worried me when watching the game was that it looked like our early European matches last season. We were certainly not a cohesive unit just a group of under performing individual players I though that was behind us and Ronny had sorted it out and yet today there it was all the same frailty. With Ronny unable to change it from the touch line I hope I am worried needlessly and today was only a blip because anymore performances like that and we can say goodbye to qualification for the Champions league.H.H.

I don’t go along with this idea that friendlies don’t matter/it’s only about fitness blah, blah.

I doubt if golfers practice for tournaments by missing putts or tennis players by hitting the ball out of the court.

We should be treating these as a dry run for the CL qualifiers.

I’m not unduly worried as I think Ronny will have it sorted by then, but it does irk me.

  12. Always disappointing to see the celtic beaten . Even more so after reading the comments of how the team played through the week . Reports like , how well the team had played , how easy the victory was . How the tic are moving the ball about . Etc . I remember coming across the same when I was growing up following the boys . My heart ruled my head on many occasions , thinking this is us now , we’re gonna be some team this season . Only to see celtic at the time win nothing until the Scottish cup win of 1965 . I think it was August 1966 , the day celtic entertained Manchester United , the day it struck home that we now really did have a team . Celtic started with 9 men who in less than a year would bring the big cup to celtic park . Manchester Utd that day were captained by former Celt paddy crerand and included 8 men who the year after celtic , would lift the European cup . Crerand . Stiles . Best . Charlton . Law . Dunn . Sadler . Foulkes . An amazing day , the day I realised that we did at last have a team , The day I was finally right , as celtic wiped the floor with the cream of English football . Yes it was only a friendly . But celtic didn’t do friendlies . That day told us on the terrace , that we were very good . I wasn’t at the game the other night . I read the comments on here , I was upbeat . I wasn’t at the game today . I have read the comments on here , today I am a bit down . It seems we still have a bit to go to compete with average European teams . You lhads will know better than me , I don’t see the team now except on TV . But what I did think ,and a few posts I’ve read are in agreement , that we could shift on another few players who aren’t up to celtic standard . And also the team could do with getting beefed up a bit , I’ve felt for some time celtic were a bit soft especially in midfield . Celtic will get there , of that I have no doubt , I just wish the main men would look beyond the spfl . And build for a run in Europe , if they did this the spfl would take care of itself .

Ronny one system at its best today. Looks good in the spl when we are dominant. Fast confident on the ball European team we look very average. Only a friendly(still had to pay for it) could have donated that to some author.

  20. Bhoys like all Celtic supporters. I hate to lose.no matter who the opposition is.The fact is we started with a different eleven this afternoon. As to the eleven that played on Wednesday. In my view these friendlys are to get all the players fitness levels up to scratch.so if we win lose or draw.what does it matter.at the end of the day we are all Celtic Supporters.

The only people who usually perform well in these games are the young youth players who get a run out. Only ones who actually have something to play for.

Remember Irvine and Fisher vs Liverpool? Remember that pre-season when Craig Beattie scored every game?

Bar two ridiculous errors by our goalkeeper we had a serious chance of beating Inter last season. The manager deserves to get his own men in. The way he works is different. What he is doing on and off the pitch is modern. Stick with this guy and we will see the benefits for years. Losing is required sometimes to learn about your players. Ronny will have learned a lot today.

    Yes – a pre season friendly implies-but .-

Outclassed and out passed by a team that finished 6th in the Czech League . Early days etc but looked very disjointed and very tactically ill disciplined , particularly in midfield .

Hopefully good preparation for the final CL Qualifying games – teams like Bate / Zagreb / Ludgoretz play football in a style which is very similar to Dukla’ s .Worry is that they tend to do it quicker and faster.

First sighting of Hanousek. He gets a regular mention in the Italian media’s could be a goodie columns. Been linked with Udinese..Pavel Nedved listed him in a 5 Czechs who have potential piece.
