Low conversion rate since Killie

448

If you are a Celtic fan with a persistent need to worry about something, the sight of so many chances being missed in each of the last two weekends will occupy your mind. The game at Pittodrie was indistinguishable from the game at Inverness (our only domestic game which didn’t end in a win), save from the last minute chance which Inverness equalised with and Aberdeen were unable to convert.

We played five games in October, scoring more than once on only two occasions, when we hit two against Motherwell and caught Ross County with a late onslaught. For a squad with the best two strikers in the country this is a conundrum.

Statistical consistency is not to be expected, of course, teams and players will go through barren and plentiful patches, but since we destroyed Kilmarnock last month, Dundee, Motherwell, Newco, Ross County and Aberdeen have all found ways to defend against Celtic for long periods.

Tomorrow night’s Champions League game stands alone, but we might need to change the pattern of play for the visit of Inverness on Saturday.

  1. Don’t fix something that’s no broke! Keepers, opposing ones, have been the difference. Nothing else por cierto.

  2. POR CERTO

Factor in too that wee have missed a few “sitters”.

Armstrong’s miss in about 44 minutes against the sheep for instance.

    It looked easier to score.

WHY WOULD WE LEAVE OUT 2 OF OUR ONLY 3 CENTRE BACK

    ****

Because they are injured and Griff is unwell.

Bit of a blow losing Kolo AND Jozo.

I expect Brendan will go with Lustig beside Sviatchenko, rather than dropping in O’Connell. He did that v Ross County last week, perhaps with one eye on Kolo being out.

Pity for Jozo. The chap’s been coming on pretty well lately, and I was looking forward to seeing what he could do against a higher standard of footballer.

Gamboa at right back hasn’t shown us much in the few chances he’s had, although let’s face it, a start against Barca isn’t exactly a “chance”. He’s had a some game time here and there lately, and it would be no surprise if he gets a start tomorrow night.

  6. Heard reports of Kolo, Jozo and Griff being left at home.

Makeshift defence of Gamboa, Lustig, Erik and Izzy is not confidence inspiring.

High scoring 5-4 to the Celtic then?

  7. If STV are correct Jozo being out will be a massive miss with Toure also out. I assume he’ll play Lustig in there and play Gamboa at RB. I thought we would need to do exceptionally well to get anything over there but this makes it all the more unlikely.

  8. would keep ML at right back and play EO’C at centre back if this the case re injuries, keep any changes to a minimum, also ML is never a central defender.

CG to much of a risk at this level to be included in a defensive role.

Congratulations to Thomas Stephen Chalmers, our fourth-highest scorer, on joining Scotland’s Hall of Fame. No mention in the article I read of the fact that he only got five caps, despite scoring three times.

*or the fact that he was presented with Pele’ strip at the end of the game by the great man himself, which he always did to the player in the opposition that impressed him most.

  10. I see all the online Celtic and lone wolf Sevco bloggers appear to be focussing on the Sevco international Alliance FC as per.

It appears due to the Going Concern notes by the Dean R Accountants employed to fictionalise the numerical blackness of the Hun.

Any Celtic fan should hold a Going Concern for Afflicted FC. In fact they should be Concerned at Going to the RottingBoltsHun Stadium on Hogmany.

    TBB,

I think it is fair to dismiss Gamboa’s Barca performance…along with the other ten or so players.

However, in games in which he has appeared since, I have noticed that he has progressively become more involved in the matches.

He stated off by keeping everything simple. When he got the ball, he immediately laid it off, by a short pass to the nearest Celtic player.

In subsequent games, he has made the odd foray into enemy territory and linked up with the midfield etc.

If that is the case, I think it has shown good coaching, by allowing he boy to feel his way into the club and the team…bearing in mind that he hadn’t played much first team football in the past couple of years.

    Could be another Izzy.

    Tontine Tim,

As well as swapping shirts with Stevie after the game, Pele also said that as well as the Scotland shirt, he also got a Celtic badge.

  15. why dismiss Gamboa’s past limited performances, I predict that he will go the same way as SJ etc and not see out his contact, IMO he is not a right back but maybe BR knows better.

BTW HAD A FANTASTIC TIME WITH OHITS AND HIS FELLOW TIMS IN PADDYS POINT ON SATURDAY HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

  18. Jozo was hobbling a bit towards the end of the game on Saturday. Pitty. Hopefully it is just caution rather than another real injury.

The players will need to play out of their skin to get the win we need to have any hope of EL qualification. But that was the case before we learned the squad news anyway…

  19. TTT- As BSR said, if he’s injured then say so, if it’s game/fitness management , BMG is a bigger game than Aberdeen , seems a wee bit strange, but in Brendan we trust.

  20. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

I think JS’s problem was that he was prepared to play for the manager, whilst other “big” players stopped.

Not conducive to dressing room harmony.

Some players take time to settle into a new club. I won’t say “gel”, therefore I am quite prepared to give any player a chance before making up my mind on them.

If you went on the Barca performance, then very few, if any player did himself justice…..and you can throw the manager in an’ all, if you have a mind to.

Doesn’t really matter whether they specifically state the reason or not.

Bottom line is, he is not playing.

The club is entitled to handle news management in their own way.

  22. Sorry !!! Just don’t buy this. Vital game that you need something from to have a chance of progressing in European football and bringing in more cash and Joso and toure ‘are being left behind to work on there fitness’ and Leigh who’s not being getting his game is ill. Nah the league is over and the next big domestic fixture is 27 days away. SOMETHINGS WENT DOWN. Or am I too cynical.

I must have missed Brendan playing in Barca. Is it cause he is so wee? Is that how wee is running a mock domestically cause wee got 12 players with Brendan weaving aroon but going unnoticed cause he is so wee? Does he wear a mouthguard to stop his teeth going BLING and giving the game away? It’s awe making sense noo.

P.S. give it a couple of days and the above will be the Truth as written by an intelligent Hun on DanGerous Media.

  24. Saw a quote from Brendan the other day that Jozo wasn’t able for three games in a row and the same for Kolo and hinted that Kolo probably wouldn’t be able for that again.

Another quote after the league cup semi was along the lines of Leigh and Stuart made big impacts when they came on as they train hard everyday as though they were first team picks and this enabled them to get to game level right away. I took this to be a message to others not getting a start
