Low conversion rate since Killie

448

If you are a Celtic fan with a persistent need to worry about something, the sight of so many chances being missed in each of the last two weekends will occupy your mind. The game at Pittodrie was indistinguishable from the game at Inverness (our only domestic game which didn’t end in a win), save from the last minute chance which Inverness equalised with and Aberdeen were unable to convert.

We played five games in October, scoring more than once on only two occasions, when we hit two against Motherwell and caught Ross County with a late onslaught. For a squad with the best two strikers in the country this is a conundrum.

Statistical consistency is not to be expected, of course, teams and players will go through barren and plentiful patches, but since we destroyed Kilmarnock last month, Dundee, Motherwell, Newco, Ross County and Aberdeen have all found ways to defend against Celtic for long periods.

Tomorrow night’s Champions League game stands alone, but we might need to change the pattern of play for the visit of Inverness on Saturday.

If he’s fit he should be playing ( it’s only the CL after all? ) he’s being paid a small fortune and he’s our best ( allegedly )

If he’s injured then say he’s injured.

    Game managed is ‘forked tongue’

I would want JS in the team if I was lucky/daft enough to be headed for the Rhineland to see

    Celtic.

  2. Cologne Altstad also filling up nicely, I will be in Dusseldorf tomorrow afternoon if your still around.

  3. Bit afraid to come on to the blog earlier with all those cowbhoys and Indians flying around. Now things appear to have settled down, I just want to say to Tontine Tim and others who spoke about Stevie Chalmers only getting three cap, that our mhan is one o only two players in a Scottish jersey who ever scored against Brazil methinks.

One thing for certain, a lot of those who received caps in Stevie’s time, never became famous like him. They never managed to score in a European Champions Cup Final. Stevie, you will always live on in the history of our club… a true and great Lisbon Lion.

My Team for tomorrow night, taking into account who is available for selection.

    Gordy

    Gamboa Lustig Erik Izzy

    Broonie Bitton

    Jamesie Sinky

    The Big Mouss

That’s who I think will start, not who I would like to see starting. I’d have Paddy and Stuart in there instead of Jamesie and Bitton probably.

I know these things are a waste of time but it’s fun nonetheless!

  5. I doubt Jozo is being game manged this time around with Kolo out. that would just be silly.

He’ll be injured and if not he should be playing. One game to keep our hopes of Euro footy after Xmas so I doubt game management will have crossed Brendan’s mind and if it has he is bendy bananas.

  6. Given the way that Jozo and Eric played together at Pittodrie, the loss of one for tomorrow night is a huge blow. That Kolo isn’t fit compounds the matter.

I’m guessing that Lustig will partner Eric with Izzy and Gamboa in the full back positions.

    Ps 71%!!!!!!!! :-)

  7. With respect to the lack of goal conversions and the injury issues, to me they are one in the same and I think BR is handling the situation from the perspective of the bigger picture.

This squad is a WIP with progress being the key word. BR is not about to lose sight of his medium and long term game plan for some short term mini gains.

We are doing fine in the League, we need to be braver on the ball and press higher, our movement and passing needs to be slicker… then the goals will come.

This time last year we were playing an injured Simunovic… he was receiving injections so he could play… He wasn’t half the player he’s been recently and it risked a young man’said career.

    In Brendan we trust…

    Hail Hail

  8. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Wow – bit of a blow to our defence. I guess either Gamboa or O’Connell to come in or go with a back three. Think I would go with O’Connell.

  9. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

When you consider BMG’s low scoring form, we gave them two, then we should be able to cope in the back line.

The trick for me is to tighten up our midfield and deny them the room to play there,

It will require everyone putting in a hard shift, protecting the ball and closing down quickly and effectively.

I would play O’Connell and keep Lustig at full back.

  10. BMG have a rough and tumble Centre forward Hahn I think he gave our two centre halves a hard time, he left the clug in on Erik towards the end of the game before he was subbed, I expect more of the same, midfield they looked to outnumber us and therefore conrol the game, we need to have the right combinations in there who can protect the defence and win/retain the ball to get it to the forwards.

I think the point being made is that he’s not fit for 3 games in 6 days and seemed to be feeling it at the end on Saturday.

  12. Just heard about our injuries. Couldn’t have been any worse. In a week, we have lost 3 of our best defenders and topped by our main goalscorer (even if he hasn’t been starting of late).

Let’s just do it, Celtic. Wouldn’t that be something……

  13. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    BSR,

If it is about Jozo and perhaps a risk of him breaking down after three games in six days, then I am for leaving him at home.

That is not to say that he could have played, but, after being out for so long with a serious knee injury, it is more important to manage his recuperation s well as we can.

I’m with the sports scientists on this one.

Kolo if you remember, pulled up with an apparent groin complaint, just prior to slipping up For BMG’s second goal.

He hasn’t featured since, so is probably not clear of it yet.

As I said earlier, the midfield is where we need to do our best work tomorrow.

Ok, he’s no’ fit. He looked as if he was struggling for the last 10 minutes on Saturday.

    TTT

I’d prefer ‘game managed’ to ‘unfit’ as would most Celtic fans.

I’m yet to be convinced of Simunovic’s ‘overall fitness’ and I reckon todays news merely compounds a lack of………………? and another potential twitchy curtain Torino day

I loved Jozo Simunovic’s two vital blocks versus Sevco.

That apart I’ve seen some excellent positioning, decent distribution, but nothing than demonstrates the hardness to be a modern day Celtic centre back.

‘Jozo Simunovic is building up his progression after being out for a long time so he won’t travel.’

    BSR,

A fully fit and functioning Jozo would be a major player for us.

I think his physical stature is hardness enough to be effective.

Sharpness in the tackle and anticipation are prime assets, since much of the robustness has gone out of the world game, except Scotland, of course.

MON was complaining in the papers here over the weekend about how much rest he has to give players who get called up to his International squads.

The first twenty four hours are r ‘n’ r, followed by a bit of light work, then he reckons he gets about 25 minutes before a game. A bit of MON hyperbole there, but his point was that the Sports scientists determine the availability of players, following a complaint from Jams Mc.Carthy’s manager about the boy playing when he wasn’t fully recovered from injury, causing his hamstring to break down when he returned to his club.

Errr – so you saw the game then…..?

  19. I think the level of Gladbachs performance in the last game despite their so called injury problems took us all by surprise where at times it seemed as if they had more than eleven players on the park. Can they produce a performance like that again or will Celtic reach the heights of the Man City game. I was glad to see Aberdeen turn the screw on Celtic’s defenders in the last twenty minutes on Saturday and the Hoops responded well, in particular Jozo who impressed. Pity he is being rested but understandable according to the medics. Young O’Connell can slot into central defence and keep Lustig in his regular position, have yet to be convinced by Gamboa.. Dembelle looked great on the ball on Saturday and hard to believe Leigh keeps warming the bench let’s hope his sharpness doesn’t suffer.

    Evening All,

Lustig will come in at Centre Back tomorrow purely because he has experience and has game time under his belt.

Gamboa will start at right back and the other contenders for those positions will be on the bench.
