Lustig, love and money

383

I think we all like Mikael Lustig.  This week the defender spoke to the Norwegian media, expressing frustration at the lack of clarity surrounding his future.  Celtic have an option to retain him next season, but in January brought in a hoped-for loan replacement, Jeremy Toljan.

Toljan did not work out but the club are clearly still looking for a new right back.  I am not sure when Celtic’s option expires, but If they get a satisfactory replacement, Mikael will be allowed to leave, if not, he will stay.

This is the football business.  It is harsh, even more so for young players released before they make a significant living from the game, of for those from an earlier generation, who achieved greatness and found themselves without money or a trade in their 30s.

Players will often talk about their “love” for a club, but that love is invariably wrapped up in a lucrative contract.  The love becomes a fondness if offered a wage that would be regarded as spectacular to most fans.

I really like Mikael and I know we need cover for every position, but even the good guys sometimes have to wait under the terms of their contract for a decision, and they all need to move on one day.

Im upset that posts of mine are missing now and not just that one from earlier.

I cannae have that as its unfair to delete a valid point politely made so I will respond here this time and in future lets debate on my site so no deletions pls.

I do know it might be this sites rule to delete connecting posts but once again deleting valid polite points is wrong even if somehow they end up in a stooshie. Delete rude posts by all means but mass deletion is too pravda for me. Anyway.

“ Not with me, but I asked the corollary question- Would you be as generous in saying that a large slice of unsold SBs and/or a closed tier in the stadium was NOT simply a sign of dissatisfaction?”

I myself cant agree with that as I feel the tiers were closed due to major dissatisfaction. I think this is the widely held view.

    Going with the crowd,,

What I meant was you continued your supporting as normal where I walked away and withheld all form of support. ( csc , strips , ctv etc )

Social media ,, yes its not listened to at the top levels and should never be the key indicator but they should be aware of the general mood in the camp and if it takes social media to do that then fine.

“ “If fans of the easily biggest fish in the pond are pessimistic what does that tell you ? Tells me they have the wrong leaders at the top calling the shots as the right ones would promote confidence.”

I wrote that because you said you were pessimistic. After 8 titles and all this money , well run club etc a fan should not be pessimistic but very optimistic ,, if all is to be believed.

That you arent optimistic about next season speaks volumes.

You would be if we were as well run as some think.

“ I fear that you are mistaking your views on the source of dissatisfaction for theirs. It would surely be easy for them to organise a march or protest against Dermot Desmond or Peter Lawwell or Ian Bankier if that was the genuine and settled source of their dissatisfaction, but there have been none- Why is that? It is the easiest thing in the world to organise a fan protest. We could ask the Union Bears for advice as they have mounted a few.”

If it was easy we would have some planned already. Its not easy at all to get people to move from their comfort zone.

Our fans in particular leave me confused for the most part as we are educated and affluent, yet wont walk away from corruption or even take a stand against it for the greater good ,, so far anyway.

As ethical people it makes no sense and I have attributed this to love is blind although some of the lads feel our traditional Catholic upbrings have a huge bearing on this. Who knows bro.

TRADITIONALIST88- you don’t need Nostradamus to have predicted Boyata wasn’t signing a new deal, costing the Club over £10m and worhy of the sack IMO,or bids would come for Dembele, and last summer was optimum selling point for him. Succession planning nil last summer, and looking at the Lustig mess, same again now.Guys are sick of the penny pinching, excuse after excuse, and ‘we tried up to the last minute of the Window bullshit ‘.Overhaul the scouting system, or look at different parameters, age probably, as resell fee is one of the main points.

    ======

Boyata left about 2 weeks ago mate, are you telling me we aren’t signing a replacement?

Dembele bids weren’t being entertained until he threw a strop and the plan changed. We decided we had enough to win the league. And as it turned out, the treble.

Lustig? still here mate. Badly handled? Looks like it, for a player who has been a good servant. But he signed a deal with a year option which we can activate until a certain date.

It’d be great to spend more money on players, but it’d be good if those who shout the loudest would occasionally factor in a few mitigating factors, like the fact Scottish football is a hard sell, we earn a pittance in TV money, and no top player wants to be playing Linfield in July when they could be on the beach.

  14. traditionalist88 on

The main point I was making yesterday that too many were jumping the gun and pre-judging this transfer window before a single player has been signed.

Much of this is based on the leaked document, previous windows, and an initial rejected bid for Turnbull.

Well, the advice to keep your powder dry till we see what happens appears to be sound advice… good few lads with egg on their faces this morning as it looks like up to 3 significant additions in the very near future, starting with Turnbull.

The full extent of your argument has been laid out on here, despite this incidental damage, so my reply will be on here where the debate was.

“I myself cant agree with that as I feel the tiers were closed due to major dissatisfaction. I think this is the widely held view.”

It is, indeed, and that shows up the closed reasoning and double standards involved. If we lose fans it’s definitely because we are dissatisfied/angry but, if we retain or increase them, it is not a sign of popularity.

    ———————————————————————-

“What I meant was you continued your supporting as normal where I walked away and withheld all form of support. ( csc , strips , ctv etc )”

I asked if you knew what I had done and then confirmed that you believe I continued supporting as normal. That belief is in error.

I do not identify Celtic FC or plc as the main culprit in this situation. Rangers & Sevco are the main villains, the SFA, SFL, SPFL were in their gang. Our club was a small part of that- they should have done more but they are not the ones on whom I would first set my sights

I also asked, when you moved to the USA during this period and what your pattern of support/attendance had been. Just how much did you give up? (Please do not take this as a hint that I believe that non-regular match day attenders are any lesser supporters- I do not- but they do have less to give up)

    ——————————————————————————-

“you said you were pessimistic. After 8 titles and all this money , well run club etc a fan should not be pessimistic but very optimistic ,, if all is to be believed.

That you arent optimistic about next season speaks volumes.

You would be if we were as well run as some think.”

I said, specifically, I was not optimistic about our supporter’s angst levels next year. I have no pessimism or optimism about issues like levels of spend. I accept that, like Ajax, we will sell players for larger sums than we spend on incoming but, unlike them, our sales and buses will be on a diminished scale to theirs. Same situation as Anderlecht, Dinamo Zagreb etc; and all big fish in peripheral leagues in an imbalanced competitive environment.

    ————————————————————-

“If it was easy (organising marches/protests) we would have some planned already. Its not easy at all to get people to move from their comfort zone.”

Exactly- Who knows but it is so. I don’t think it is the conservative Catholic wing that has been most reluctant to protest the Rangers/Sevco switcher. It was the less religious young crowd who actively wanted them back as they wanted to embarrass them on the pitch. It would take only a few conversations with the match day attending crowd to realise how little awareness there was around the details of 2012 and Res. 12 nowadays.

So, to finally mount some sort of action in 2019 or 2020, will have missed, not just the boat but the whole fleet. If there is a protest, it will be around the popular theme of “Splash the Cash, Celtic!”. That gets more people worked up, unfortunately, than the dirty deeds and shenanigans that Scottish Fitba got up to.

I think that we had to close part of stands because of boredom and apathy. Winning was exciting at first but, without any serious opposition, it got too easy. Only a small number would have been down to “Internet bampot s.” With us now looking at major historical achievements I think, whoever our opponents are or how elements of the support feel about the board, we will fill the stadium. What happens should we win the 10 is another question.

  23. Winning the 10, if it happens, will then set us on our way to reaching “55”. Now that will be an aim that the fans will fall for, oops sorry, will want to see happen and will probably fill the stands until it does happen. Por cierto

    Whilst the detail is not the easiest of reads especially when it refers to documentation that requires context that is provided on the Archive but itself requires more reading, there is a simple narrative;

Rangers FC from 2000 to 2011 cheated Scottish football by breaching SFA/SPL registration rules.

That breach should have led to points deduction based on Welsh FA recent decision to deduct point for registration breaches by Bangor City.

Justification for not doing so was provided by the LNS Commission that was tself premature, (the charge was more serious than registration failure it was acting in bad faith towards fellow clubs. ) It was also misled by failure of RFC to provide documentation asked for that spoke of fraud and unlawful ebts. (DOS).

The SFA should have had that documentation in 2011 under UEFA FFP rules. If not licence was granted then retained under false pretence.

Celtic were first made aware of the possibility of breach in 2013 and worked with Res12 guys until charges of bad faith were made by the Compliance Officer in May 2018 in relation to the monitoring period only. CQN blogged about it 16 May 2018.

Those charges omitted reference to the grant period for unknown reasons. This removes shareholder locus in that sanctions for breaches in the monitoring period do not apply until following year.

This was brought to Celtic’s attention immediately but they did not respond.

Out of the blue hard evidence that a payable did exist before key reporting date of 31 March turned up in Mid May 2018. It was provided lawfully and supported by HMRC court testimony in 2012. All in the Archive.

Celtic did not want to touch it so at great expense it was drawn to SFA attention last June 201i8 by Res12 lawyers.

In July the SFA JPDT accepted an argument by TRFC that the matter should be referred to CAS under (according to media reports) the terms of an Agreement that can only be the 5 Way one.

The SFA were asked for a progress report amongst other things at the end of May 2019 by Res12 lawyers.

Their answer and Res12 letter will become available on the Res12 Archive.

What happens next depends on the answer or no answer.

Celtic’s policy since being provided with hard evidence a payable existed (it however may not have been overdue if it satisfied 4 conditions, but there has been 6 years to say that) has been to rely on a process that appears to have had no authority to proceed in the first place and which in any case appears, in absence of an explanation, to have watered down the charges to produce a desired result (as per LNS).

That policy has to change if SFA fail to respond in a manner that addresses all the issues put to them since 2015 by Res12 lawyers including the latest.

The probity of the SFA Judicial Protocol and those responsible for compliance since 2015 to 2018 depends on such an answer.

The validity of Celtic’s position since last May depends on it too.

That is as short a narrative as can be made to cover events but if anyone wants to put it in any shorter form that would galvanise supporters at large – wire in.

Studies in the past showed that what brings fans out is competitiveness.

That is a factor that influences Celtic’s policy in terms of signings.

We cannot compete at higher level in Europe but if we do then we make our game uncompetitive.

It’s a tension exacerbated by our main competitor going bust and the successor to them might just bring competitiveness back.

I think we have got used to being the lion against the poor Christians and rather enjoy chewing them up and the current concern is that the prey might be a tougher chew next season.

Given that 10iar would confirm that the lion is indeed king of its jungle/Colloseum for generations, just adds a bit of tendering but after that will the crowds through the Christian a bone?

No metaphors were harmed or mixed in making the above comment.

That’s the message imo – support it with fact-checked round figures showing the extent of the “enterprise” and any other indisputable supporting facts that draw human / supporter relevance to other competing clubs. Hugely important that the Scottish element is emphasised rather than Celtic on its own.

Scottish football needs to heal itself. Too much Celtic in the “medicine” will imo obviate a thorough and suitably meaningful change. And………if we keep going back to Celtic for pressure, imo, we will nicely neutralise the power of the medicine as the grummlers in our Great Support will neatly shatter into a myriad of conflicting factions – happpy / unhappy to chunter away on social media platforms large……and small.
