Lustig, Samaras and problems after World Cup 98

1000

We’ll all be supporting Mikael Lustig and Georgios Samaras as Sweden and Greece attempt to qualify for the World Cup tonight but the prospect of Lustig, Samaras, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Forster and possibly van Dijk not having a break until July, days before the Champions League bandwagon starts rolling again, is unappetising.

Celtic contributed more players to the 1998 World Cup than any other team.  Perhaps as a consequence, we started the new season in third gear, unable to string two league wins together until thumping five goals past a now defunct outfit.  A Perfect Day.

Georgios, Mikael, Emilio and Efe are hugely important players to Celtic.  They are also players we have an excellent chance of retaining, which in some respects makes it even more important that they are ready for action early than those like Fraser, who until he signs his new contract we can be less sure of retaining.

Best of luck to Greece and Sweden tonight, but if your guys return home disappointed there will be compensations.

Ross County have won the respect of many, and rightly so, for building a successful football club from little more than sticky backed tape and empty washing up bottles, but one of their key achievers, manager Derek Adams, has to be one of the most ungracious people in the top fight game, a fact now being picked up in the wider media.

It is unfathomable if this trait is a fundamental aspect of the club’s success.  The clichéd football manager is an unapproachable tyrant but surely there’s more to it than that?

I’ve heard a good few footballers tell their tales of drama, they all have them, even the quiet ones, but it is an objective fact that Frank McAvennie has more stunning stories than anyone in the game.  I’ve heard him tell some publicly, and then listened to the really incredible stuff privately.

The Untold Truth with Frank McAvennie, is at Victoria’s Night Club this Saturday 23rd.  Doors open at 7pm for a three course meal, entertainment and Frankie recounting his stories.  There will also be a sporting auction and a Q&A session.  Book at www.franktalks.co.uk

I like to remember McAvennie for his contribution to Celtic in his first spell with the club.

A terrific talent and a key player in our memorable Centenary Season.

Having witnessed one of his speaking performances I can only say it soured my opinion of him as an individual. I wasn’t alone either. He was the talk of the steemie afterwards

One comment in particular had the whole room sitting in silence for about two minutes. I suppose sometimes it is just not good to meet people you had admiration for.

Young Ryan was from Brechin ( he may well have been born in Aberdeen but was in Brechin when he was five). He has been with United for a very long time so I don`t think whatever his early allegiance was is a factor now. He is a United man/boy. He is a wonderful player who will, almost certainly move on but he has recently signed a three year contract and would cost a lot. United are said to be looking for £5 m.

On a personal level, I would like to see him stay at DU. Along with MacKay Stevens and others, he is making Utd a smashing team to watch and they could develop into something special. Over a season, of course we would do better but in a one off game, I would keep my money in my pocket.

If they avoid injuries, I would strongly fancy DU to finish second in the League and do well in the Cup.

Some players are intelligent most are not.

Frank fits the latter. He is playing to his crowd and will not always get it right. He does West Ham nights too. He is trying to make a living.

I see no harm in that.

  5. Bobby Murdoch was a magnificent footballer who could have played in any team in any era.

Remember doing a detour to his pub in Rutherglen (was it The Sportsman’s Bar or maybe even Murdoch’s Bar?) a few times when going to Shawfield dugs…..just to say I’d been in the same room as such a great man.Unfortunately Celtic had a shameful way of looking after favourite sons, who were no longer of use in their eyes, in the 80s and 90s.

Looks like Bobby Murdoch is the one player from the past most people would like to see in our current team.

King Kenny got a mention and so did Lubo but not one person mentioned Henrik.

I have heard many of these guys speak at dinners and not heard many that are great to be honest. The internet is ruining these guys jokes and stories.

I did hear once of a guy who was at one in Fife I think it was Kirkcaldy and former referee Rowbotham was there. He is from Kirkcaldy.

The question was asked about giving a penalty in a match and he said he gave every penalty that Rangers could have had. He then boasted that they F*nian B*stards got nothing from me.

This guy was telling me this story on a stag night. He was shocked that a former referee would be so brazen. He said to me no wonder you are paranoid. This guy was an older fellow and was a Jambo. He told me this around 10 years ago. He was geniunely shocked. I wasn’t.

Anyone ever been to a Celtic night with a referee as a guest speaker? I know they do Rangers functions regularly.

My own favourite was wee Bertie. I loved the time he sat on the ball during a game against thems,

    —————

My mind may be playing tricks on this, but……was that in a Cup Final at Hampden(may have been the 4-0 game) at a corner at the Rangers end near the end. If memory serves….did he no blast the ball from the corner straight into them….then shuffled, as Bertie did, away up the park……I can picture it yet….

I’m not calling his intelligence into question. The comment had nothing to do with intelligence, it was spiteful.

He was not playing to the gallery either, the comment was about someone who was also popular with Celtic supporters. The reaction reflected what everyone in the room was feeling, with the exception of the handful of West Ham fans who turned up at the event with McAvennie.

Obviously there is no harm in anyone trying to earn a living. I would never suggest that.

But maybe you should go along to the show and judge his performance for yourself. Maybe he’s improved. That was the only direction he could go in to be fair.

They seem to lack something , them as aberdeen should end up along with us way ahead of the pack. Weather it happens or not is another thing.

I agree about the young players staying with the teams abit longer.. Better for them instead of going and sitting on a bench elsewhere.

Just annoys me greatly that we missed out on mccarthy and if these boys are ready for a step up id rather we got in before the english teams.

Cheers for the info, i’ll keep an eye on him

  22. Livi….

    Blame me…!

  23. Akin to Oscar Wilde’s ‘Love that Dare not Speak its Name’, and Basil Fawlty’s ‘ Absolutely Unmentionable War’, there is a subject that must not be aired in Scotland’s Mainstream Media.

That is. Why is Newco allowed to retain Oldco’s trophy haul, whillst being allowed to slope the packman in relation to old Oldco’s debts.

If you don’y believe me ,try getting a letter published on the matter.

  24. LiviBhoy,

It was not their poor jokes or boring stories that sickened me.It was their thoughts on Sevco and their negative attitude towards our club.

I think we should stop the thread about useless former players. It reminds me of They Embarrassed the Hoops in NTV.

Unfair on people who played at a higher standard than most of us ever could.

    Plus,I’m spoiled for choice.

But would go for Martin Hayes.

  28. Paddy Turner….

Frank Munro was well past his best when we signed him.

Think it might have been the season big Jock was recovering from his car crash and Sean assumed command?

We didn’t even qualify for Europe and got battered by Burnley in the Anglo Scottish cup following season. Was grim to follow the Hoops mid 70s?
