MacDERMID IN CHARGE

MATTHEW MacDERMID will be in charge of Celtic’s Premiership game against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Wednesday night.

The whistler will be assisted by Ross Macleod and David Dunne on the touchlines with Grant Irvine in the VAR control room. Dan McFarlane is the fourth official.

MacDermid was also referee for the champions’ opening-day league fixture when a goal from Benjamin Nygren gave them a 1-0 victory over Dundee at Parkhead on August 3.

Last season, he was involved in a controversial red card incident at Parkhead when he sent off Auston Trusty in the Hoops’ 2-1 loss to Hibs in February.

SEEING RED…Martin O’Neill (extreme right) looks on as Matthew MacDermid prepares to send off Auston Trusty in Celtic’s 2-1 loss to Hibs at Parkhead in February.

Originally, MacDermid took no action after the USA World Cup centre-back became embroiled in the usual pushing and pulling with the opposition’s midfielder Jamie McGrath on the edge of the penalty area as the hosts prepared to take a right-wing corner-kick.

Trusty tried to break free and the Easter Road player went down theatrically. VAR ordered the match official to review the incident and, amazingly, he returned to the pitch to flash a red card at the defender.

A late goal for the visitors completed an afternoon of misery for Martin O’Neill’s men.

We can only hope there is no repeat in Perth on this occasion.
