Madden, gambling and decisions you cannot explain

363

I was pretty nonplussed when Bobby Madden was appointed for our game against Newco at Celtic Park last season. His favourite team is neither here nor there, but elements of his performance gave grounds for concern.

He should have red carded Jason Holt for his dangerous lunge on Patrick Roberts. The same card should have been shown to Clint Hill and awarded a penalty for the scything of Leigh Griffiths. Kenny Miller could have been sent off for a two-footed lunge at Stuart Armstrong. These incidents were not merely in favour of one team, they could clearly affect betting markets.

Money can be made on more than just the result in football games. You can bet on a red card being awarded, or not. If Madden awarded Celtic that late penalty, he would had no choice but to dismiss (already booked) Hill. The Halliday challenge had to either be ignored, or result in a sending off. So Madden didn’t even award a foul.

For a man with the length and extent of Bobby Madden’s gambling issue, this raises red flags. Thousands can be made on knowing the outcome of a seemingly innocuous element of a game of football – like ‘Will there be a red card?’ Only for the game against Newco at Celtic Park, there was nothing innocuous about that question.

Madden cost Celtic two points the last time these teams met at Celtic Park and stopped our then-18 game winning run. Betting markets were influenced at the same time. I fear we are in for more of the same tomorrow.

The SFA have a duty of care to ensure our game is clean of betting influence, this must include a clear acknowledgement of referees gambling histories.  I’d avoid betting on tomorrow’s game, it is susceptible to unusual events.

Assuming Paul is right (and I’ve no doubt he is), how will the SFA act? Regan and co should be in a cold sweat right now as they face another squeaky bum time.

Although they have brass necked so many, their underpants must be dipped in WD 40.

Should I be worried about my Goals Galore 3 prediction of Celtic scoring a barrowload and also playing a joker on it to double my points?

  5. Big Packy,

My Dad used to play with him. Says he was useless at football but the boys let him play because he was the only one who had a ball. He didn’t get a chance to take it away, as his faither would tell him to leave it with the boys playing with him. I think John Cairney was that wee bit younger.

No worries- my neighbour has just put a £50 bet on for me. He’s called Bobby something… begins with an M- very helpful of him considering he’s a bluenose and attends the local Lodge.

Josh Windass: Rangers reject Preston North End bid for midfielder

    By Simon Stone BBC Sport

Rangers have rejected a £500,000 bid for midfielder Josh Windass from Preston North End.

It is understood Championship side Preston are unlikely to pursue their interest in the former Accrington Stanley player, 23.

    Sooo…

    Hello lurking Huns.

(pause for faux outrage over the ‘H’ word they equivocate with their own anti-Irish/Catholic vitriol, blindly ignoring it’s basically the catch-all term for Sevco fans used by EVERY supporter in Scotland; but, hey ho, let the bitter orange tears flow…)

Yer club’s DEID. Yer tribute act is dying the death of 1000 cuts. Yer antiquated Victorian lavvy is falling apart at the seams. Yer google-eyed chairman/fuhrer/grandmaister is a crook. Yer team’s shite, and yer support’s got cold knuckles from all the snow and gruesome melty faces like someone opened the Ark of the Covenant in the centre circle last home game.

For what it’s worth, I assume P67’s got some hard evidence on Bobby Madhun. I’ve tried to like the fella, totally respect his comeback from cancer – looks like he has decent rapport with the players at times – but have winced as his systematic archaic ‘kultural’ conditioning has resulted in that ingrained bigotry influencing some major decisions.

A shame. On occasion he’s looksed a solid referee if he could have ditched the baggage. But this is Scotland. The ignorance of the Hun mentality – that inbred insular anachronistic bitterness that closes their communities form the real modern world – draws them back to the dark; like heroin to an ex-junkie.

If he’s been gambling on his own performances, well, that’s just plain idiotic. Another promising career wasted. Ra Peepil, indeed. Back to the junior cesspts for you, Bobby, Where your favourite club will end up living on fading memories of the cheating decades. Soon. Very soon, lurking Huns. Pray for snow.

P.S Bobby. Laying a bet on a Broonie card, right? ;))

  10. Given the scale of BM’s questionable decision making and the size of his performance chasm / gap and his long standing desire to pray at every opportunity towards Govan …

I would be surprised that there would be a financial dimension to his shameless bending of the rules to help his heroes and hinder their foes — he does it in my estimation because that is just the type of low life reptile that he is.

For the record I think the issue is bigger.

He is a secondary element in any planned big fix.

The patsy, the useful idiot that will do just what he does — maximise the chances of his beloved TFOD2.1 winning the game through his flawed, partial, slanted and limited but superbly idiosyncratic application of the rules.

The issue is bigger than BM.

It relates to those who would want a fan with a whistle to officiate this particular game?

  11. Brawking news….

  19. St Mirren v Dundee U. Lewis Morgan hasn’t been impressive so far. It’s a very old fashioned match, hussle and bussle, some thunderous tackles and no real quality.

Provan was a fine player for Celtic but he hasn’t carried his professionalism into the world of punditry.

Watching the last 20 mins or so of the St. Mirren game, not much fitba being played and pitch not helping but the lad Morgan looks like he has a touch of the Paddy Roberts about him.

  22. i'vehadtochangemyname on

newco have scored 41 this season – us 48 – should be goals scored by both teams tomorrow

  23. Seems like the Xmas ceasefire is well and truly over on here.

Yer man Bobby Madden, not a fan of him as a referee but he is far from the worst, has been charged, found guilty and sentenced on here .

I have often criticised refs on here and Madden is included in that hall of shame. However, at the moment we are all a bit previous with our ideas of what may or may not happen tomorrow.

We should be above all of this stuff, I don’t mind reviewing decisions as and when they happen but be careful we don’t get what we wish for , I think Craig Thomson is free tomorrow? The master of game management. I see Stan Collymore is being quoted on this site today also, I suppose if he is telling us how good Celtic could be then, we can excuse past errors of judgement as okay then.

Watching the St Mirren game as usual can see 3 graduates of our local boys club on display as well as see what Lewis Morgan can do.

After 45 minutes I have not seen a lot of football and rather like the Edinburgh Derby earlier in the week I feel the ball will need hospital treatment after the 90 minutes. Take care. HH
