Madden, gambling and decisions you cannot explain

363

I was pretty nonplussed when Bobby Madden was appointed for our game against Newco at Celtic Park last season. His favourite team is neither here nor there, but elements of his performance gave grounds for concern.

He should have red carded Jason Holt for his dangerous lunge on Patrick Roberts. The same card should have been shown to Clint Hill and awarded a penalty for the scything of Leigh Griffiths. Kenny Miller could have been sent off for a two-footed lunge at Stuart Armstrong. These incidents were not merely in favour of one team, they could clearly affect betting markets.

Money can be made on more than just the result in football games. You can bet on a red card being awarded, or not. If Madden awarded Celtic that late penalty, he would had no choice but to dismiss (already booked) Hill. The Halliday challenge had to either be ignored, or result in a sending off. So Madden didn’t even award a foul.

For a man with the length and extent of Bobby Madden’s gambling issue, this raises red flags. Thousands can be made on knowing the outcome of a seemingly innocuous element of a game of football – like ‘Will there be a red card?’ Only for the game against Newco at Celtic Park, there was nothing innocuous about that question.

Madden cost Celtic two points the last time these teams met at Celtic Park and stopped our then-18 game winning run. Betting markets were influenced at the same time. I fear we are in for more of the same tomorrow.

The SFA have a duty of care to ensure our game is clean of betting influence, this must include a clear acknowledgement of referees gambling histories.  I’d avoid betting on tomorrow’s game, it is susceptible to unusual events.

It’s not just the ball that might need hospital treatment, the way some of these ‘tackles’ are going in.

  2. Like most Celtic supporters ( I suspect), I feel we get a raw deal from most ref`s in Scotland. I have always felt Madden was in the top three of offenders. Recently, though, I have noticed that the Celtic players seem comfortable with him and find him easy to speak to. That has made me now see him in a different light.

    Back to the Saints/United game.

CRC gave me special permission to pick them every week, and with a joker as well!

Not really … but almost as bad, I picked Man City with a joker …. could be a good bet as Man City have goals in them … but even though they are still in the relegation battle, Palace haven’t lost since the beginning of November, I believe ….

but, was a tough slate of games this week!

PS … do you believe Paul’s article today? If so, and Celtic continues to do nothing (which, on the evidence of the last 6 years, seems likely), what do you do?

Cracking goal from Lewis Morgan to put Buddies 1-0 up. Didn’t realise he was 2 footed. Outstanding player on the park but room for improvement with right development

Aye, he disny respond to well to pressure, crackin game tho.

I have been betting on them finishing on green for most of the match, slightly up, would be a hell of a lot more if I had had the balls to double up each leg, but I didn’t :-)

Good fun tho, the next game no, Anderson is a tops man and Taylor disny know what he is sometimes, he chops and changes too much for betting imo.

  13. I’ve no idea what this means as not that computer savvy tbh. I just use laptop for checking hotmail and reading Celtic sites and Celtic twitter accounts including Phil Mac, Celtic Graves, Yourself and Lisbon Lion @tirnaog09 and many more etc but when i come here i have a message in top right of screen saying , ‘ this page is trying to load scripts from unauthenticated sources ‘!

    What does that mean? Thanks

PS Always great reading on CQN just like Lisbon Lion blog ( tremendous blog btw ). Keep up the good work. HH

Morgan again from edge of box – 2-0 Buddies. We could have a player in this lad

  16. Tim Malone Will Tell on

At the risk of stating the obvious, it doesn’t matter how ‘well’ or ‘badly’ Madden referees tomorrow – that is all subjective.

If he has potentially compromised his judgement via the bookies, he shouldn’t be a Scottish grade 1 referee.

    It’s that simple.

The last time Celtic said anything about the refs they went on strike and we got the blame, maybe they are trying a different approach this time :O)

    MIT,

Doing fine my friend, and Christmas with the family is always great. Hope it was good for you too.

I see the smart money is on Man City ( c/w Joker ). Since i picked the same, it’s bound to be a 0-0 draw.

I’m sure you have acquaintances who’s imaginitive use of gaffer tape is far more extensive than mine :-)
