Magic from Madrid, share scams in 2012

1894

Atletico Madrid, happy for them?  Not an easy one.  I remember listening to the radio commentary the night we lost to them in the European Cup semi-final of 1974.  They, and Rapid Vienna a decade later, represented very unworthy competitors in European competition.

Both teams returned to Celtic Park in recent seasons.  Rapid picked up pretty much where we left them, an odious lot, but Atletico and their fans didn’t seem to bother about the past, they came and left wanting to play football.

As a boy I remember chastising old soldiers who fought the Germans during the war for their persistent aversion to modern Germans and Germany.  “They are a new people, nothing to do with the 30s and 40s”, I said.

It feels a bit ridiculous holding a grudge against Atletico.  Their achievement last night, and this season so far, has been fantastic.  Against the most powerful foes, they might just win the hardest league in the world and the Champions League.  This late in the season, that is a stunning prospect to still be on the table. They should be an inspiration to us all.

I see the media is (responsibly) alerting Celtic shareholders to the threat of a share scam apparently being perpetrated against unsuspecting fans by spivs and criminals.  Where were they in December 2012?

    Re Independence,

Has anyone actually done a “Runaround Now* and changed their opinion on how they will vote after read the reams of posts on here?

I don’t own the place but after reading Bawsmans post about being the last contributor on the last article, perhaps people could open another browser and keep the independence stuff flowing in the previous article and let the current one be about mocking zombies and pie men, Back to lurking,

    Tonyd get some videos up

    Hail Hail

  2. Okay Paul 67. I’ll forgive Athletico.

But there is NO WAY I’m backing down on Rapid Vienna.

    ; )

  3. I played for Dennistoun Waverley at that time and we finished training early that night.

Got to the ground just after the start of the second half and we were lucky enough to be allowed in without paying.

Disgraceful performance by Athletico players, without doubt.

I remember at the time wishing their manager and players would die horrible deaths and roast in hell.

I do however quite like the present day Athletico and hope they win the CL.

So pleased Barca’s diving, cheating overpaid fann*es got pumped.

Now there is a team I do not like…..and with a passion!

  4. I was there that night too, and I don’t understand why they weren’t banned for their conduct.

I don’t believe they ever apologised for their behaviour.

I seem to remember the Celts were treated badly when we went over fro the return game.

    So, no forgiveness from me.

I think they were well beaten by Bayern in the final (albeit after a replay)

I hope they get Bayen in Friday’s semi-final draw, and get pump-ed again.

    ;o)

  5. The fact that, big Bily the Sheep, as he’s known, is not a grass

Very admirable from Billy the Sheep but there are plenty Sheep types who despise Rangers/Sevco and I find it strange that none of them have outed the seat breakers.

I had a look on the Dons forum and there is no chat at all about broken seats. The Sheep must be an old school flock and don’t do grassing.

Fair play to them for that. Hope Hibernian are being reimbursed for the damage to their ground.

  9. As Lenny said a wee while ago……

If we were 500 million in debt, no doubt we would have a decent team, or words to that effect.

I actually thought the piece put up earlier about The Whispering Fat One as being a chip of the old Jock was satire.

Miss Doc just pointed out the real article by Keevins.

Reinforces the point about staying away from the SMSM.

KevJ, I would love to read you comments on that one.

Hi, my amigo – hope you and yours are well.

I think that, probably at the end of next season when

Hugh Keevins retires…you’ll see the Green Brigade

revealing a new banner proclaiming –

“Come in agent Keevins – you mission has been

Btw, I’m sure I read on here the other day that, Phil Mac,

Matt McGlone and Hugh Keevins were sitting together at

    a recent AGM ?

Maybe Hugh Keevins was the one with the Rory Bremner

Anyway Doc, good to talk to you and not too many folk mention

    Afternoon all,

In all seriousness — we’ll done to Athletico Madrid last night. They are a fine team to watch and their arrival in the last 4 is a sign that footballing power does shift from time to time.

I think the gap between Celtic and those in the last 8 is one that is certainly capable of being closed and narrowed. I also think that changes in revenue streams in terms of broadcasting capabilities can benefit Celtic if they are smart enough to embrace the future in terms of business — by the way that includes greater inclusion and improved engagement with the fans.

Beyond that I am off out for lunch with a season ticket holder who is heavily involved in the tv and film industry — his speciality being distribution and the seeking out of opportunities in foreign markets.

If you haven’t bought a copy of Seville yet then you are missing out. I was describing some of the extracts yesterday to someone and it had us both laughing. It appears to be a real hit with those who have a copy.

Lastly, Neganon and others — I have been following the Independence debate at length both on here and elsewhere. I have looked at a lot of the arguments for both voting yes and no — including the business arguments, currency arguments, social and political arguments, financial and fiscal arguments and so on– and I am happy to and will set down my views ( for what they are worth – which is probably bugger all ) on my strandsky blog and then post a link here.

However to summarise — if you were an independent country would you vote for the current union between today’s Scotland and the remainder of the United Kingdom?

    I wouldn’t!

Further, the UK already has a virtually independent and unaccountable state within its midst. It is called London — and I have been told to my face that various institutions in the city of London is absolutely terrified of Scottish Independence because they will not be able to essentially leverage the value of the oil, the hydro electric resources and income, Whisky income and so on. That’s Spells disaster for London and a devaluation of the international value of the pound sterling.

A currency share in the event of independence is absolutely essential to the city and many senior bankers have said so.

An example of the sudden improvement in things Scottish- and the perceived need for that improvement to strengthen the links between Edinburgh and London to stave off full independence — can be seen in any study into the changed fortunes of Edinburgh Airport which not too long ago used to be not much more than a hut and a runway!

Beyond that, there is a coming revolution in England and elsewhere in the UK against unfair governance from London — the London economy is so over cooked and all political parties and their leaders have no intention of spreading economic growth out from London.

However an independent Scottish Economy forces that.

Canada is a founding member of NATO yet dies not hold ant nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction since 1984.

As for the so called “catholic” vote — with greater democracy– more immediate democracy — comes the possibility of greater and more immediate influence. Bigotry in this country exists — but I believe it is dying and can be helped on its way in a more democratic country .

Lastly ( for the moment ) Government from Westminster has failed many people — not just Scots! It is time for change — time to challenge the established status quo of unaccountable politicians with a mindset of being career politicians with a gravy train attitude. That is what exists today and in the hear and now.

    That has it go!

If Scotland does choose independence there will be an immediate move towards co-operation, conciliation and the search for common purpose between London and Edinburgh. The focus will not be on putting up barriers but on what we can actually do together on a joint basis. That is the way that London conducts it’s business with other capitals — but not the way it dealt with matters in Scotland because it didn’t need to.

Instead, in the past people like Margaret Thatcher would publicly announce that Scotland would receive £x million through the Barnett formula and then she would write to George Younger in private and ask him to feed back £60 million of that per year without telling anyone — so that the money could be spent elsewhere!

That is fraudulent government — yet when it was revealed none of the UK wide parties publicly condemned it as an outrage. The reason for that is that it was more or less accepted common practice in politics.q

Sorry — but given the straight choice between keeping that system of Government and setting up another one — it is a no brainier for me!

But they require detail can wait till later.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Lastly — the lib dems are apparently sitting on poll results which show that the majority of don’t knows are most likely to vote yes if they think they will be no more than £500 worse off in an independent Scotland.

That came from someone who spoke to Willie Rennie last week!qqq

    Kilbowie Kelt,

I find it strange when people compare the “aramgeddon” and “cataclysm” quotes.

Had Scotland been independent in 2012 I have no doubt that a deal would have been done with the taxman to save oldco Rangers.

Salmond had secret talks with HMRC UK urging them to do a deal to save an institution he considered “part of the fabric of Scotland”. He returned to Scotland a defeated man.

I know a Yes vote is note a vote for Salmond or the SNP but it’s undeniable the pressure from the MMS in an indepedent Scotland to “save Rangers” would have been relentless. Instead the UK simply shrugged it’s shoulders and said “tough luck Rangers”.

Would the same have happened in iScotland?

I agree George Robertson’s rhetoric was way over the top but Scotland leaving the union would undoubtedly be a very expensive and very messy divorce. Many Scots feel that it is simply not worth it. The most vocal Nationalists should accept that’s how many people feel.

  17. Was there in 1974 – standing under the floodlight pylon between the Celtic end and the Jungle

Honestly believe that it was shock that prevented a break in and lynching -which would have been well deserved ! – I cannot remember the build up to the game but I don’t think anyone was really expecting AM to behave the way they did !

I never saw the Racing match – so could not comment on that but to me AM will always be that disgusting shower who sullied the game and our stadium that night

Paul talks about the war -well plenty of Germans from Government on down have apologised for that!

Until AM man up and do likewise -then there can be no forgiveness nor reconciliation!

Our house erupted the night the big Bayern CB equalised in the ECF and anytime they lose I raise a smile and salute to their victors !

Slight problem might be if they draw Chelsea in the semi!

What we need is that highly efficient accountant they have at Ibrox as Scottish chancellor of the exchequer.

99% of all monies raised fed straight back to the employees. That’s efficiency.

A .M . game .I was a very angry 18 yr old at that disgraceful game ,how the park

was not invaded was a testament to the celtic support,it was one of the last games (think we only had 2 home games after it?) at celtic park before moving to bognor.

Still thought we would beat them in the second leg,the old man new better

Last game that season was R Yeats testimonial : liverpool scored late on and their fans chanted “we scored a goal,we scored a goal”

We replied ” we scored four,we scored four”

One simple question, THC-up, given what you say above….

Why is EVERY SINGLE Rangers’ man & Orangeman voting NO in September ?

    Think about it !!

  25. Steinreignedsupreme on

    KevJungle –

Seeing as you are on. I was off the blog when you replied to the previous posts, I think one was yesterday and the other was last week.

  26. The Honest Cover-up on

    Kilbowie Kelt will vote YES

It’s not as simple as that though, is it?

The idea that people should vote the opposite of what an Orangeman is voting without looking at the bigger picture and thinking though the long term effects is beyond silly.

Unfortunately, it’s exactly the sort of tribal mentality that seems to typify some (not all) Yes voters.

I can see some benefits in Independence but I also see many negatvies and lots of uncertanties. I can’t understand why someone would vote Yes to get it up the English or up the Orangemen.

I notice you still haven’t addressed my point. Do you think oldco Rangers would have been saved in iScotland?
