Magic from Madrid, share scams in 2012

1894

Atletico Madrid, happy for them?  Not an easy one.  I remember listening to the radio commentary the night we lost to them in the European Cup semi-final of 1974.  They, and Rapid Vienna a decade later, represented very unworthy competitors in European competition.

Both teams returned to Celtic Park in recent seasons.  Rapid picked up pretty much where we left them, an odious lot, but Atletico and their fans didn’t seem to bother about the past, they came and left wanting to play football.

As a boy I remember chastising old soldiers who fought the Germans during the war for their persistent aversion to modern Germans and Germany.  “They are a new people, nothing to do with the 30s and 40s”, I said.

It feels a bit ridiculous holding a grudge against Atletico.  Their achievement last night, and this season so far, has been fantastic.  Against the most powerful foes, they might just win the hardest league in the world and the Champions League.  This late in the season, that is a stunning prospect to still be on the table. They should be an inspiration to us all.

I see the media is (responsibly) alerting Celtic shareholders to the threat of a share scam apparently being perpetrated against unsuspecting fans by spivs and criminals.  Where were they in December 2012?

  2. My own memory of Atletico is the guy that a workmate forever after referred to as the ninety second subway.

Jesus Quique came on, viciously attacked Jinky, hands behind the back bowed to the ref, the hapless Dodan Babacan, and almost unbidden waled off.

In 1972 (19th April)both Celtic and Rangers 1872/73-2012(IL) played in their respective European competition semi-finals (2nd legs).

We played Inter Milan in the European Cup (and lost on penalties) and they played Bayern Munich(and won 2-0, 3-1 on agg)in the Cup Winners Cup.

Their match kicked off earlier, at 6:00 or 6:30.

The SFA reach new levels of desperation in their quest to assist Sevco .

Jackie Mac banned from touchline for Saturday

sickening but not unexpected and the clubs who left the same people in charge of our game are reaping what they sowed INCLUDING us .

Hopefully the Cooncil and NET TV will have got their act together and I can maybe watch some of this tonight.

    Group 4

    ———-

    21:30 Nacional (5pts, -3) v Santa Fe (5pts, 0)

A draw no good to either team here.

Currently second behind Libertad in their national competition, Nacional had a disappointing draw with lowly General Diaz at the weekend. Coach, Gustavo Morinigo, has already announced the return of striker Fredy “Zorro” Barreiro. However, he is undecided whether to play Julio Santa Cruz, or Hugo Lusardi in place of suspended, Marcos Melgarejo in central midfield.

Santa Fe, still a few points away from making the next stage of the Colombian play-offs, were held to a 1-1 draw against much fancied, Once Caldas on Sunday, That man, Wilder Medina (great name that. No?) getting the Red’s goal. There’s been criticism of keeper, Camillo Vargas recently and it’ll be interesting to see if he keeps his place tonight. Santa Fe’s major injury doubt is key man, Omar Pérez who has an ankle injury and will be subject to a late fitness test. His presence/absence will be a big key to Santa Fe’s performance.

Prediction (home advantage should, just, edge it. A very narrow) HOME WIN (55%)

    21:30 Atlético-MG (9pts, +2) v Zamora (7pts, +1)

Galo in the next stage whatever. Zamora needing a victory.

Probably the main point of interest for Galo, will be whether this week’s news that Anelka will be signing affects their established front man, Jô. Reading between the lines it would appear that manager Paulo Autori, has had little to do with President Alexandre Kalil’s surprise move (which he announced via Twitter last Sunday) and said he would prefer to praise a player who is here, rather than one that “maybe” here.

Currently Venezuelan league leaders, Zamora have been the surprise package of this group. Zamora underlined their national superiority with a fine 5-2 win at the weekend with both key players – striker, Falcon and diminutive midfielder Pedrito Ramirez getting on the scoresheet. Ramirez really has a “right peg that could open a can o peaches” and it’ll be interesting to see how he fares against a high pressing Galo playing on their home turf.

Prediction (Galo’s experience to shine thru) HOME WIN (70%)

    Group 8

    ———-

    23:45 Arsenal (9pts, +4) v Santos Laguna (13pts, +9)

Both teams, regardless of result, have already classified from this group.

Knowing they are guaranteed a runner’s up spot, El Arse likely to field a second IX tonight and rest players for their weekend Clausura commitments. Manager, Gustavo Alfaro is in the huff with the press right now, so now official Arse statements about this game, to date.

Santos Portugese manager, Pedro Caixinha has promised his (second string) team will go and chase the three points in this match. He also has made much comment about the tight Arsenal pitch and how it will suit a mobile, ball playing side. Marc Crossas will feature in this game.

Interestingly enough the three Mexican teams who enter into the Libertadores come from the fifth, sixth and seventh finishers in the Liga MX. The top four go into the CONCACAF tournament, where three out of the four semi-finalists are Mexican.

Prediction (hard to call) DRAW (55%)

    23:45 Penarol (4pts, -5) v Dep Anzo (2pts, -8)

Two teams, regardless of result, have nothing other than honour to play for.

Penarol were in Brasil, Sunday as guests of Inter RS for the inauguration of their Beira Rio World Cup stadium. Penarol were, by all accounts, played off the park but lifted a 100 kUSD pay check for the privilege. Manager, Fosatti, under all sorts of pressure, has promised that “honour” will be restored in this match. For me, only bright spot for Penarol is Jonathon Rodriguez, a player worthy of/destined for better things,

Currently in seventh place in the Venezuelan league, DANZ are nine points behind leaders Zamora and now see domestic success as the most important thing and have sent pretty much a reserve squad to Uruguay.

Prediction (Penarol to recover some honour) HOME WIN (70%)

    Group 6

    ———-

    02:00 Gremio (11pts, +6) v Nacional (1pt, -8)

Manager Enderson Moreira desperately wanting a home win here (to ensure a good seeding in the winner’s group). However, he has said that he may experiment with one or two fringe players. Principally holding midfielder, Edinho and Jean Deretti (another 20yr old who’s been well quoted in Gremio’s reserves) who is more of an attacking midfielder. Gremio also have that big “Gre-Nal” derby this coming Sunday against Inter RS, so maybe not 100% focused on this one.

Nacional have a key league game against Defensor this coming Sunday and, as a consequence, have sent an understrength to Porto Allegre. Two players likely to feature, both returning after lengthy injury lay offs are defender Sebastian Coates and striker Alex Alonso. This, plus the cat that Nacional have been working heavily on defensive formations during training tell it’s own story here

Prediction (even partially focused, Gremio should be good enough)HOME WIN (85%)

    <b.22:00 Newell’s Old Boys (8pts, +5) v Atletico Nacional (7pts, -3)

Both teams battling for the runner’s up spot.

NOB suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Rosario on Sunday. A defeat which prompted NOB coach, Berti to say that this was not acceptable for a team like Newell’s and anything less than a win tonight is unthinkable. Major injury worry is the loss of central defender, Heinz (hamstring). However, that will be offset by return of Maxi Rodriguez. NOB also likely to start with Trezueget up front.

Atletico sit top of their national table and had a hard fought 1-0 win on Saturday to keep them there. Significantly, this win stops a four game losing streak (sorry, didn’t mean to sound all “baseball commentator” there) and gives a bit of confidence going into this game. However, they will be without two key players – midfielder, Wilder Guisao and striker, Jefferson Duque.

Prediction (should be a good game)HOME WIN (70%)

  6. Over and Over……………..”Loss of jobs, in my opinion scaremongering”

Large scale employers have already stated they WILL relocate.

For instance, do you think for one minute that the electorate in Portsmouth, Plymouth, Barrow and all other large ports would tolerate ‘English’ pounds being spent in Govan/Rosyth on shipbuilding going forward?

How many are employed at all the military units in Scotland alone?

I reckon there’s 20,000 direct job losses there alone.

The polls show the gap narrowing and if the trend continues YES will win the day-hopefully.

    ——————————————————-

No they don’t – read any of my 5 previous posts on the subject – the most recent being this morning – and you will see that they are very dependent on the question asked and the data gathering methodology. Therefore you will see consistency in the same kinds of poll produced using the same methods, but inconcistency between methods.

The Yes vote was -5 according to Panelbase at the start of 2012 and it’s still at -5 in the most recent Panelbase poll. The Panelbase polls are online surveys – so I’m sure the CyberNats are well-drilled to ensure they respond – a legitimate tactic but certainly no credible representation.

Overall, the polls show a Yes vote of between -5 and -32 points – and certainly no improvement or gaining of ground.

Remember the Tories want to re-draw constituencies by average population which will see a huge re-alignment of seats into their heartlands. If, they somehow, manage to get a Tory/Ukip parliament on the go, I suspect that will be back on the table as a priority.

The they should mobilise support for change from within. Someone mentioned earlier that SNP support had been gained from disillisionment with Labour. I think that is a correct analysis. Labour needed to move to the Right to win in the UK and did so under Blair and Brown. This disenfranchised many Scottish Labour voters who saw a Labour Party that no longer represented them. In a lot of ways, it is the vaccum that Labour left which the SNP has filled – promising a better form of representation under what is being marketed as “independence”.
