Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

Still some work planned on the mobile site.

Rush endured a season at Juve . . He was mocked by the media [ as were Juve for wasting their money] .The Sunday night Serie A highlights program took great delight in constantly commenting on the disparity between his scoring ratio in England and Italy .

When he left , the media made a big thing out of how much each of his goals had cost.

I will check that one out. Most of them are terrible. I got a pack of 6 sporting books one Christmas. Pele’s, Alan Ball, Clough, Roy Keane, Ali and one other I didn’t read. All a very good read but Clough’s was the best. The guy was a genius. Keane’s is worth a read. Alan Ball’s was surprisingly good as well.

Sounds like the Scottish media when one of our signings don’t work out.

Rush was a great poacher. Seems to be a dying breed these days. People in England struggle to understand him. God knows how the Italians got on. Wouldn’t have helped him one bit. Was his move before or after Heysel? I think it was after and the Italians were never going to take to him.

Like I say I read his book but most of it went right out of my head. Very little bits of interest outside stats and how he felt after games.

Went to his testimonial and bought his book. If I ever meet Rushie at the very least owes me a pint!

Not a daft question at all. For years on here Winning Gemmell referred to the team once known as Rangers as The Darnel.

Get a hold of Roy Keane and Brian Clough’s. Clough’s is brilliant. Talks about his playing days and then managing at a very low level and Hartlepools. The guy was super confident all his life. I didn’t realise his scoring record in his playing career. Totally astounding record as a goal scorer!

Most footballers release one because they feel they have to but don’t actually say much.

Best Celtic one I read was James McGrory’s. Read it as a kid. Written by Gerald McNee of course but it was when he still liked Celtic. Loved reading it as a bhoy. Read it 4 or 5 times.

There is a also an interesting book called footballers and gangsters. Well worth a read about Gerrard, Fowler and other scousers getting caught up in the whole gang culture of England. Bet that wasn’t in his book.

WG referred to Rangers as “the darnel”, drawing his inspiration from the Gospel according to St Matthew.

He put another parable before them, ‘The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everybody was asleep his enemy came, sowed darnel all among the wheat, and made off. When the new wheat sprouted and ripened, then the darnel appeared as well.

The owner’s labourers went to him and said, “Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? If so, where does the darnel come from?” He said to them, “Some enemy has done this.” And the labourers said, “Do you want us to go and weed it out?” But he said, “No, because when you weed out the darnel you might pull up the wheat with it. Let them both grow till the harvest; and at harvest time I shall say to the reapers: First collect the darnel and tie it in bundles to be burnt, then gather the wheat into my barn.” ‘

Fortunately for young Fisher, his first name is actually Darnell.

  18. If we sign Johnny Russell, like any player who signs for Celtic I will be wishing him all the best and supporting him 100% but I haven’t seen anything in any of the games (against us) that would suggest to me that he is any better than the players we currently have.

Is he a striker or more of a winger because he is not overly prolific in terms of goals, 43 in 113 apps for Dundee United.

Could Efe Ambrose take that berth up?

Would McManus be brought back to the club by NFL?

Would Russell be as good a signing as we all hope?

    Will Hooper stay or go?

Can’t beat the speculation of the transfer window. Jim White always tries to make it way more exciting than it is. I suspect that he won’t have many blue chip signings down Govan way this summer.

  22. When a player or manager moves to a foreign country to further their career and experience another culture, their first course of action should be to learn the language.

Still remember a programme on Italian TV just before the start of Italia90.

Scotland had qualified and two of the guests were Joe Jordan and the beast Souness, both of whom had played there.

They were both asked questions – in Italian – and Joe Jordan replied perfectly in the local vernacular

Souness, on the other hand, could only communicate through an interpreter – he never uttered one single word in Italian! Not even ‘si’ or ‘no’!

  24. SFTB (last evening),

Your lie about me “failing to answer, true to form” can only be excused – if at all – by your failure to follow what I’ve posted from time to time. I can well understand you not reading all or even most of my posts, but I have ALWAYS made a point of answering whatever has been directed at me. Sometimes I sleep at night, tho’.

My comments on Kojo/TSD were NOT concerned to “distinguish between their racism & their sectarianism”: the posts on which I commented were accused of racism, which they did NOT demonstrate – they were not accused of sectarianism.

You show an unfortunate proclivity for smear tactics when you remark that “I don’t dissociate myself from them”: why should I? Show me ANY post of mine where I have associated myself with sectarian (or racist) views.

I have read several of Kojo’s posts & a few of TSD’s. I do not “follow” either – I’m absent from CQN a fair bit of the time, most recently when travelling. I don’t see either of them “conflating” Islam with an ethnic group (a rather difficult task anyway, as Islam is about as diverse ethnically as Catholicism). Your own conflation of the views of the Tea Party, UKIP & the BNP does you little credit but says quite a lot about you.

Unfortunately, CQN lets a great deal of mean-spiritedness pass, + occasional obscene language (directed at posters), so it would be consistent to allow sectarianism & racism too. Of course, any of these should be cogently answered (except obscene language, which should be banned), but IMO it’s better to let their perpetrators have their say, if only so that they can be answered. I believe in free speech: one of your questions from last evening makes me doubt that you do. BTW you haven’t dissociated yourself from mean-spiritedness or obscenity: I don’t draw too many conclusions from that, unlike you.

Should you never comment on another post of mine, you’re forgiven. Actually, I’ll go further: I would have forgiven you, had you never commented on anything that I’d ever written. As you say, our preoccupations are different: mine is not for jumping on any fashionable bandwaggon.

Yes —— after Heysel ..[ an unusual deal —- he signed for Juve but stayed on at Liverpool for a season ]

He got some revenge on his Italian critics when he scored the winner for Wales in a game v Italy.

  26. Sorry to debunk a great tale, but…

He had a hard time settling in Turin, once allegedly remarking, “It’s like living in a foreign country.”[11] However in his autobiography Rush says that this was a joke made up by Kenny Dalglish, then in an interview published in The Irish Times in 2008, claimed that the quote was in fact fictional….
