Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

  1. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS.

Hamiltontim was talking about it on Saturday, and I said I’d go.I’ll wait for a few days to see how I feel a bit nearer the end of the week,I’d like to meet and shake your hand if it’s possible I’ll be there.

  2. This was posted on TSFm by HistutePursuit and I thought I few here would appreciate it as it sums up very nicely what is happening :

    RIFC are getting desperate.

If Sevco 5088 is now claimed as a subsidiary of RIFC PLC it can only be to claim “ownership” of the deal that Sevco 5088 had negotiated with Duff & Phelps.

    This suggests that:

    1. The D&P contract with Sevco 5088 is completely bulletproof.

    2. The only possible avenue to secure RIFC’s ownership of the assets of the former Rangers Football Club is to establish that RIFC is the ultimate beneficial owner of Sevco 5088.

    3. For Sevco Scotland to have picked up the contract with D&P it must have presented itself as the parent company of Sevco 5088.

    This presents some major difficulties:

Sevco 5088 is already claimed as a subsidiary of another group (LFL Ltd).

Charles Green is on camera saying he “handed the company back” to Craig Whyte when the CVA was rejected.

The Rangers website still holds a statement saying that Charles Green resigned from Sevco 5088 at the time Sevco Scotland was created.

The Rangers website also quotes Charles green as saying:

““In a discussion with Mr Whyte, who taped some conversations, I am alleged to have said: ‘You are Sevco, that’s what we are saying.

“This is correct but at that point I had signed a resignation letter and a stock transfer form because it was decided that a Scottish company should buy a Scottish institution. Sevco 5088 wasn’t required.”

    http://www.rangers.co.uk/news/headlines/item/3683-charles-green-statement

Now if this last statement is true – that Charles Green resigned and transferred his Sevco 5088 shareholding prior to the deal with D&P being executed – it seems obvious to say that Sevco Scotland had no automatic right to act on behalf of Sevco 5088.

In these circumstances, it also seems obvious that Sevco 5088 cannot be a subsidiary of RIFC.

If Sevco 5088 are not a subsidiary of RIFC, the assets purportedly purchased from the former Rangers Football Club by Sevco Scotland are extremely vulnerable to legal challenge by the true owners of Sevco 5088.

For RIFC to claim 100% ownership of Sevco 5088, it must establish that it has a 100% shareholding in that company. It is not sufficient to claim only that their employee Charles Green once owned 100% of Sevco 5088. RIFC’s claim of ownership must include evidence that Charles Green was the ultimate beneficial owner of Sevco 5088 and title to his shareholding in Sevco 5088 was lawfully passed to Sevco Scotland.

Given his previous statements, I don’t see how that could be possible.

  3. Absolutely stunning news about wee Oscar. What a kid, what a wee fighter that bhoy is. So happy for the wee mhan and all his family. I hope he now goes on to have a long and fruitful life.

If anyone can they should get him to lead the team on to the park on the 11th May.

    Make it happen Celtic please.

    Oscar Knox real Celtic Warrior.

  4. RogueLeader

Neither RIFC Plc nor LFL Ltd claim that Sevco 5088 Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary. Both companies may own 50% of Sevco 5088 each.

Murky business they have got themselves into but yes, for RIFC Plc to be claiming ownership of Sevco 5088 suggests that they now believe the transfer of assets was not all above board and are trying to find some way to suggest that it didn’t really matter.

the 9 in a row record is rightfully ours and it was won fair and square

the huns however ran up a huge amount of unsustainable to cancel out our record

So in my opinion the 9 in a row won fair and square by us, without makes it rightfully ours

however please feel free to think its not

  6. Great news about wee Oscar.

Perhaps having followed Celtic since my dad took me to see one of Charlie Tully’s first games at Shawfield, I have got used to great occasions. After all I was at Lisbon, Milan and Seville. What gave me the greatest pride in the Celtic family yesterday was that as tense as the game was at the 19th minute, we stood to show our admiration for Stan and to let him know we do not forget him. He will be in our thoughts and for those who do so in our prayers.

Moments like this one show what we are all about. For 125 years it has been the same. Those few men who gathered in St Mary’s Hall set the tone and we will never forget. We should be proud of our tradition.

Lastly congratulations to Neil and the bhoys.

  9. Mort – in any other country this morning’s announcement to the LSE would have made their football licence null and void. In my book it was a corporate admission that Craig Whyte was involved with them in direct breach of their license conditions.

We all know nothing will be said though, by anyone…..

    Great day yesterday….

    But a BRILLIANT day today!

I have never met young Oscar, but just read the news…. Like everyone on here, I am sure …. I would trade every title and every trophy for more news like that.

Thoughts and prayers are with the Knox family today.

I know that many bhoys on CQN have played a part. I like to think that many bhoys who have gone before us put in a word with the Big Guy up there as well, and are up there looking down and smiling today. Although I have met only a few of you, it really is my privilege to be associated with this club, and with each and every one of you.

    Hail hail

PS…. This includes you Peter Principe. We may not agree on how we get there, but I dont doubt that you also only want the best for the club. A day like today reminds us what is important, and what is not (our petty spat). A day to forgive, forget and move on. Peace?

  13. Amazing news about Wee Oscar.

Hopefully his folks can start to enjoy just being parents again.

God bless them and all the medical staff involved!

no worries – I think I made my point quite ham fistedly (eh- is there such a word?)…

My dad died in 2005 so I hope he has been able to look down on the chaos that has unravelled over in Govan.

My key point is – rangers fans have lost their grip on RFC Board and must surely be reaching a point of no return. I’m intrigued to see what the cleansing process will wash out. For me this is not about if david Murray is involved but to what degree…?
