There in lies pasrt of our problem. Why must we accept that we are EL and not CL level side. Are Malmo more a CL side than ours with a budget a fraction of ours? Were Maribor more a CL side thna us last season? If this attitude is typical of the support in general (and I fear it is) then the board downsizers have achieved their objective. We started off with Larsson and Sutton, now we have Cifti and Scepovic.
Rather than blindingly buying into a EL package, our longer term good would be better served by holding onto our green pound and leaving the stands, upper and lower tiers, deserted for EL matches no matter the opposition Otherwise, the downsizing will continue and in five years time we will look back and wonder if we will ever sign players as good as Cifti and Scepovic again.
My support for the club, once unconditional, now has to be earned. If I feel the club managers (board and dug-out) are taking me for a mug then I will withdraw my support till things change for the better. Sadly, there are no signs that this will happen any time soon, so I will find something more enjoyable to occupy my time on match days. There was a time when I could not ever imagined making such a statement but the plc board has irrevocably changed the relationship between the club/plc and cash cow supporters. I, for one, refused to be milked any longer.

Enough said about last night, let’s hope for a decent showing in the EL and a clean sweep of the honours at home.
Agree that the EL campaign is absolutely crucial to Ronny’s future at Celtic. I love the big guy but he has to be judged on results in Europe.
Last night was a bitter pill but I think we deserved what we got. We need to pick ourselves up and sort ourselves out.

Good morning CQNers,
For me the difference between Malmo and ourselves can best be summarised by the Malmo’s 2nd goal. In 4 passes (that’s 4 touches of the ball) they broke from their own 18 yard box and carved us open. From the resultant corner they scored a second goal.
We move up the pitch like a lost sidewinder.

I have no wish to enter the debate on the whys, wherefors and who did whats of last night. Like most Celtic supporters I’m just really disappointed, and any attempt on my part at understanding the reasons for it would be ill informed and based on an emotional rather than rational reaction. So I’ll hold my peace on that.
However a comment was made by Ruducantfail at 11:14 last night about the announcement on Eric Riley that in my mind cannot stand. You are an ignorant clown. You’re comment betrays a deep seated disgusting ignorance of mental illness in general and the dreadful Parkinson’s disease specifically.
Some on here reckon you are an agitator, have posted to troll on here in the past. I don’t care. I do know though that your willingness to bring this terrible condition into a football debate makes your online presence loathsome in my eyes.

Ronnie still the man for me.. He hasn’t got what it takes just yet for European success but he has the basics right in getting players Fitter etc
Ronnie would have benefited greatly from a year under Lennon which seems to be what the plan was… Lenny had Parker mjalby and Thompson to help him.
Ronnie has himself, Collins and Kennedy..a lot less experience there. I would like the club to bring in aore experienced number 2 to help Ronnie.
There’s only so many times u are going to get an above average performance from average players so if they have an off night like last Nyt we are doomed..
We all want a left back who has mulgrews height and left peg by also who has izzys speed and enthusiasm.. A left back like that is at least 5m. So Ronnie is always going to be stuck at who to play in tougher games.
Armstrong and GMS and Griffiths are all good young Scottish players who will do a very good job for us over the next few seasons..they will only move up a level if there is at least a couple of class players playing around them or they will always struggle in Europe.. Obvious mo’s European countries are technically better than Britsh born players.
People keep linking us with more spl players..all good for domestic but sadly most young spl players aren’t ready for step up straight away into euro games.
We badly need derk, stokes mulgrew and ambrose off the wage bill..few more aswel probably but that would be a start.
Dreich down here. Heaven’s greetin’ and, I guess, there has been plenty more weeping and gnashing of teeth on here all night.
Hope our manager can turn things around in the Europa League.

I’ve not read back on the blog since about 10pm,nor have I watched the second half.
The first half was enough, and I’m led to believe we got bliddy worse. So…
Unexpectedly,I an NOT gonna go for the PL jugular. Not quite.
I have disagreed vehemently with his downsizing policy for a number of reasons. It has NOT reduced our costs, cos we buy too many flops. He has not used the income from its successes to improve gradually. It has led to major drops in income, fan base and status.
But he loosened the purse-strings sufficiently to give Ronny sufficient quality to beat Malmo.
Those players are by and large the same ones he had available all year, from when we returned from the winter break and upped our game.
By and large,Ronny picked a team good enough to beat Malmo-though I doubt we’ll hear anyone again questioning whether Izzy is the best left-back at the club. And he has a blind spot about Johansen.
It certainly wasn’t the fans’ fault either.
So,yep,I blame the players. One or two can say they acquitted themselves adequately-mainly the two on the right side-but the rest need to look at themselves and make sure they never ever let themselves, the fans or the manager down like that again.
They picked a bliddy expensive time to play like rank amateurs.

A few rattles. I didn’t know they came in royal blue. A royal Windsor connection perhaps?

Some say that this is a good time to be a Celtic supporter.
Only Celtic supporters can make this club what it should be but, they can’t do that if they are on the outside.
I read on here once that, the only way to get the Celtic hierarchies attention was to, with hold the season book money and let it be known to the hierarchy that, the only way for the season book funds to be released was in exchange for their shares ie: transfer the power of the club to the fans and, dismantle the PLC set up as this seems to only benefit the high earners at the club which flies in the face of the very nature of Celtic FC’s founding father’s aims for the club.
Radical change – much needed radical change, will not be possible till next summer, maybe better to keep the powder dry till then.
Think about the future CQNer’s.

Last night was a technical (i.e. fitba) failure. The board, Peter Lawwall, Dermo et al have provided a stable and sustainable budget for the football manager for a number of years. We may not be delighted with the sums available but this is our reality operating in the league that we do.
The failure last night was on the pitch – mentally weak and short of that extra effort when it was needed. Tactically out thought etc etc…. A poorly prepared team with a massive financial advantage was defeated by a well prepared team on a small budget. This is happening too often and suggests that something is wrong with football management side.
Another real concern is the money wasted on poor acquisitions. Forster, VVD, Vic etc mask the generally poor record of Rasmussen, Scepovic, Boerrigter, Miku, Lassad and so on.
Major overhaul time. The strategy isn’t working any more and PL must step up and change how things are done on the football side – or step aside and let someone else lead the club’s strategy. Two years out of the CL is a major hit – a third year may take a long time to recover from.
Unless RD and JC produce something worthwhile in the EL they shouldn’t get another crack at the CL. They too have to deliver.

MICK1888 on 26TH AUGUST 2015 6:11 AM
GG – we have to do both because the good assets will always want to move on to bigger leagues (and wages) anyway. The failure to qualify gives us a financial and a football problem in acquiring new players – this means also that the dire record in the transfer market is just not on any more.

I am 41 years old.
I reckon I have seen about 20 Euro away performances identical to last night. Performances characterised by mental weakness, tactical naivity, comic-cut defending, and lack of fight.
These have occurred under MON, WGS, NFL, and now Ronny. They have happened when Henke, Sutton, Lubo, and Naka were in the team… Anderlecht, Basel, Benfica, Utrecht, Legia…
Other teams lose European away games. We seem to curl up into the foetal position and die.
Why?
….PFAYR SUPPORTS WEEOSCAR on 26TH AUGUST 2015 7:16 AM
In days not so distant we lost away in Europe to decent teams …we’ve always lost away in Europe since I can remember ……I remember the celebrations when we beat Ajax away …I remember being in competition after Christmas in the Seville season …what a treat that was
However …recently I remember some appalling European performances where we have put in a gutless , heartless embarrassing performance …Lenny early European attempts were awful …last night was another …Legia was another ….Maribor was another
Last year I thought Deila was wrong for us ….he won the league and the LC. …great….we’ve virtually no domestic challenge …he’s not good enough
Our success last year was predicated upon an excellent CB partnership …when VVD goes we’ll the best part if our team will have been broken up …..Boyata isn’t in the same class as either VVD or JD…
We sold Matthews …replaced him with a project …Lustig gets injured …no experienced decent cover at RB…we let Fisher out on loan yesterday ..why??
We have one striker LG… Ciftci doesn’t approach good enough …he’s been appalling in his performances thus far ….knowing he was going to be banned ..why did we buy him when we did
We are weaker now than last year …our attempts at buying cheap selling big will flounder after this transfer window …there isn’t a player worth buying left in our squad
What then ??? More downsizing
The CFC squad costs too much for the standard of performance
Lawwell has wheeled and dealed us from a team who beat Barca at home to this rubbish we see now …he has been paid very handsomely for it ….he doesn’t deserve it …the business maybe in rude health …the product is a disgrace
Add the gutless approach to the SFA and MIB cheating
I’m quite depressed about the state we are in at present …
ITALIABHOY on 26TH AUGUST 2015 7:21 AM
Lots of pretty poor stuff on this blog tonight. Yes, we’re all disappointed, but we need analysis not dozens of posters telling us how betrayed they feel.
Ronny is a good coach. Last night was a bad performance. We have good players, but are too reliant on weak ones in key positions.
The strategy of only buying young is not working. A couple of experienced heads might have helped last night (though our worst performers were Brown and Mulgrew, two of our most experienced players…).
The EL will be tough, but as a club we need to be competing regularly in Europe. If not in the CL, then in the second competition.
We dust ourselves down, we go on.

Strangely I have been wondering about exactly the same question all night.
It is a phenomenon which has stretched through my lifetime and spans the Stien era until the present.
Is it a Celtic character flaw or more likely a weakness brought on by our environment?
Lots of crazy stuff on last night but lots of serious calls for change.
I support Ronnies ideas and vision but I would agree that the nature of the performances and results of the team through the campaign should be crucial to his retention.

I understand your dilemma having passed on the joys of Celtic to both my English born sons, one of whom was in Malmo last night. I just think our longer term good is better served by temporarily witholding our support to force change at the top. My main disappointment last night, before the game, was that in-form IZZI was left out in favour of Mulgrew who, we all know, is not match-fit following a long time out….
The ones that are not buying the EL is your choice, it means your not supporting the club and that is your choice also, I’ll be buying mine and you won’t be there, so pick up your toys and go f.,. It wasn’t a good performance last night, we get that ffs, but the predictables are expected, and as usual way over the top, Celtic supporters my faking arse.
Your an embarrassment to real Celtic supporters, same as some of the players last night, I’m not naming names acting like a DR columnist or a Hun it is what it is, we lost that’s it, it’s over we move on, I’ll hope and support the club for better results till they put me in my box, unhappy? Last night showed we still have some way to go, but we are a better team now than we were 12 months ago. We are fitter and stronger, but the combination of an inability to defend corners and a failure to create any meaningful chances despite dominating possession are the reasons we lost to a mediocre side.
While I am disappointed we haven’t qualified for the CL it’s clearly a step up in quality that we’re not ready for just yet. Who knows who we might have drawn but while I could just about bear to watch us being thrashed by Barca or Bayern, I think it would be really hard to take a beating from Chelsea or one of the other English teams.
I don’t think we need to make any rash decisions about anyone in the squad they just collectively had a p*ss poor game.

Firstly I’m not a huge fan of our ‘board’, far too conservative and one man makes all of the decisions (not PL, he’s just a hired hand). However last night, and last season’s failure to qualify have little to do with them. They have provided the funds to spend on players that is in execess by multiples of Malmo, Maribor, Legia. I believe our wage bill is five times that of Malmo.
The problem we have are poor tactics, a manager who has no plan b, a scouting network that is deeply flawed and our biggest flaw, players who are not technically good enough.
Where the ‘board’ let us down is in a strategy that doesn’t allow the manager to build a team but tries to unearth cheap players to sell down south at a large profit. As long as we do that we’ll struggle in Europe and eventually become more inconsistent domestically.
Time to be radical, Brown or Johansen, not both, we cant afford two central midfielders who can’t pass the ball, play players in their best position (Armstrong), sign a LEFT BACK, we’ve needed one for at least two years and sign some experienced players (through the spine of the team) to help develop (into multi million pound players if you want it to sound sexy to the board) the young talent we obviously have.
67Heaven .. CHALLENGING THE LIE ..I am wee Oscar...... Ipox belongs to the creditors on
Last night was always going to be about the first goal. Whoever got it was going through. We did not start the game well, we lacked composure on the ball and there were signs that we could be exposed. I thought we were too open, more than we were against Qarabag. Once the first goal went in we totally lost our discipline, chasing the ball in the wrong areas, releasing the ball at the wrong times and giving away petty fouls. Some players also trying to do too much themselves. We played right into their hands, it was their perfect scenario, ‘get the first goal and then….’
As much as I like Ronny we need to tighten up away from home in Europe. A bank of 4, 2 in front, Johansen dropping in to midfield and the wingers dropping back to keep a tight shape and support the full backs. That was what was required last night.
Johansen is the epitome of our problems in Europe. A good spfl player, but totally exposed in Europe. Petty behaviour acting like a big time Charlie, chasing the ball in the wrong areas and showing a complete lack of tactical awareness and discipline. Ronny has a major blind spot with him and it’s time to reign him in. He ain’t half as good as he thinks he is.
I heard he was dead on
Can someone explain to me how super fit salad eating Ronny Deila’s Celtic cannot get into the Champions league but Irn-Bru drinking/ chips eating Neil Lennon’s Celtic could?
It’s a flippant remark but one which holds water. Apparently the players were less fit under Neil Lennon but did remarkable things.
I for one think on a footballing level it is a good thing that they are not in the CL proper because the number of doings the team would have taken did not bear thinking about. That is not to say they won’t get beaten badly in the Europa league but depending on who we get and how seriously they take the competition it should be less disastrous.
If they play with that level of trepidation and fear as they did last night then it will be long nights.
Thankfully there are only two post Europe matches where the team are at home so only two Sunday Celtic park games. The other matches are away and are likely TV events in the Highlands and Hamilton.
Thank goodness for small mercies.
The Exiled Tim makes a very good point about the strategy – we’d never have signed Lubo today. Buying young with a view to selling on is what all clubs do but other clubs also get in experienced players to help the young ones along. We don’t have enough of that.
We also lack technical players who can turn the game. We have runners but few skillful players. It is time that the much vaunted Scouting network trawled Eastern European leagues with a view to getting such technical players whether experienced or young – getting them young before the big guns come calling is important there but it seems it’s the Israeli league or Man City reserves all the time or now Dundee United and Hibs.
It’s not to say there are not good players to be had but to improve the team we need skill.
As for the manager the jury is very much out on him now.
He’s had time to change the squad and it appears there is no improvement – out at this stage last year, same again this year.
Celtic need to go out and put performances which simply blow the opposition away domestically and they need to put performances together in Europe where they stop leaking goals. Over 20 were conceded last season – you cannot progress with that kind of record.
I am not convinced Deila can do anything else. He is tactically weak in my view and his rigid insistence on his system is not making us any better. Throw in Johansen – he who cannot be dropped and you have a stubborn manager and that is also not good. You need to be more flexible.
Shambles.

—————————————————–
Still gutted this morning. Cheered myself up a bit by reminding myself that I am still a Tim.
Enough said about last night, let’s hope for a decent showing in the EL and a clean sweep of the honours at home.

When is the EL draw?
Agree that the EL campaign is absolutely crucial to Ronny’s future at Celtic. I love the big guy but he has to be judged on results in Europe.
Last night was a bitter pill but I think we deserved what we got. We need to pick ourselves up and sort ourselves out.
The very best of luck today,Olivia. A stressful day,of course, but one which will set your mind at ease.

One asked the question if Ronny thinks we are at the same level as Barca due to all the open spaces at the back.
This could cause problems in the Allsvenslkan now as Malmö will get the CL money.

Well said.
Morning all.
Also why am I getting an ikea pop up along the bottom of my iPhone screen ?
Some kind of windup
Hopefully some good news on TCR today to cheer us all up.

The CQN pram is surrounded by debris.
Dummies aplenty.
Bibs of every hue. One has James written on it in green building blocks.
The odd disposable nappy. I think one or two aren’t exactly in pristine condition.
A green and white hooped onesie. Adult size. No questions asked.
A few rattles. I didn’t know they came in royal blue. A royal Windsor connection perhaps?
A handful of towels. Full of slabbers.
A few baby bottles. I’m sure they don’t contain tea.
A baptismal certificate? Somebody took the loss really badly.
Thank God the bin men come tomorrow morning.

Good night and take solace in the thought that most of us will still be Tims in the morning.
And we will still have European ties until Christmas.
We could conceivably improve our European coefficient.

Sadly the above saves me typing a long post. I agree 100%. As a family we spend thousands a year on tickets and merchandise, from today that stops, until the greed at the top stops. The Celtic ethos we’ve instilled in all our kids is no longer being fed ( not by us ), so our next generation of die hard supporters is being killed off. Absolutely disgusted.

I understand your dilemma having passed on the joys of Celtic to both my English born sons, one of whom was in Malmo last night. I just think our longer term good is better served by temporarily witholding our support to force change at the top. She’s young and has a whole life of supporting the club ahead of her and missing a few EL matches, whilst difficult at the time, is a small price to pay for the greater good. Just my opinion. Your choice and I don’t envy you.
Ronny will be hurting too bhoys. He failed at the last hurdle and the roar was missing. It will come back , I know the away support and the GB will support him not sure about the armchair warriors. Would have been great to reach the CL this time but we are clearly not ready. Ronny for me , one game does not make or break any man. Glasgow is green and white.
Been away working so missed past few games..home now and just turned on the 1st leg game to watch.
1 up after 3mins and parkhead bouncing…jeez we deserve better.
Malmö look to be sitting back giving Armstrong brown etc time on the ball…any professional player looks good when he has 10sec to control and pick a pass.
When he has 2/3sec that’s the difference.. I don’t think many of our players can do it under pressure.
I see sevco are disrespecting the other teams in the Championship again, with impunity ….. nothing changes…..
Yourself, you are poor excuses for supporters and have been just dying for this result, lots of people got what they have been begging for, a Celtic defeat, lurking Huns, dummy splitters, PL haters, RD haters, board haters GIRFUYs.
Pizzed off? Yes I am, take it on the chin I will, but not from the Huns in here, or anywhere else.

Great post
Ronny has another full season to improve the team and try his best to move the dross on… Ship out those who are not good enough asap and along youngsters more game time.
M6BHOY on 26TH AUGUST 2015 8:09 AM…
Withhold support..!!?? ……. Hahahahahahaha hurtin bhun
Shambles.
