  1. We will sell VVD. Manager will get no cash

And peters bonus ( pension plan ) will be secure

No more cash cows to sell and the downward spiral will continue

    Peter doesn’t care

  2. The Battered Bunnet on

Waking up this morning, the failure to qualify hit home before I’d even opened my eyes, a right dull yin and no mistake.

But in retrospect, the manner of the defeat was more disheartening. It was a collective fail at every level. The players were absent from the occasion, the manager seemingly unable to influence the performance. Craig Gordon apart, I can’t think of a single player who turned up for the fight, and that’s a worry.

My sense of it is that something occurred pre-match to unsettle the players. Whether it was simply the result of complacency meeting reality; or the dawning on them of how important the Champions League is to the club causing a collective bottle crash; or perhaps Virgil giving a nod that he’s for the off demoralising the group; or the selection of a brand new back 4 unnerving the team; something happened to dismantle the team’s sense of itself. Perhaps all of these things.

The team was not prepared to win, in both senses.

I have always taken Champions League qualifying as a 50:50 chance for the league winner in Scotland. The reality that we will win the league comfortably means that each year qualification is a coin toss. Or that’s what I had assumed.

Looking back since the Scottish Champions required to qualify gives a different slant.

Mowbray’s defeat to Arsenal is best kept out of the data from the point of view that we are unlikely to play a side of that calibre in the Champions route format any time soon.

Lenny’s first year saw defeat to Braga in UCL qualifying, and defeat to Utrecht in the EL qualifier.

Next season we qualified for the EL despite losing to Sion, the Swiss being disqualified.

Following season we beat Helsingborgs to qualify for he UCL.

And the following we beat Karagandy to qualify.

Ronny’s first season saw us lose out to Maribor in final qualifying, this despite having lost out to Legia in the previous round, Legia being disqualified.

This year, we’ve lost out to Malmo.

    Rangers record is somewhat shorter:

    Lost to Malmo

    Lost to Maribor

    The summary looks like this:

    Lost to Braga

    Lost to Utrecht (EL)

    Lost to Malmo

    Lost to Maribor (EL)

    Lost to Sion* (EL)

    Beat Helsingborgs

    Beat Karagandy

    Lost to Legia*

    Lost to Maribor

    Lost to Malmo

That is not an A List of European Football by any stretch, yet the record of Scottish Champions from 6 UCL chances since 2010 is 2 qualifications, and including the EL, 2 qualifications from 10 chances: Considerably less probable than the 50:50 I had assumed previously.

There is no recommendation this morning, only dull frustration, and an observation that over the past 6 years we have found it difficult to compete with clubs from the B List of European football.

The question are: Where does that place Celtic in the cast? And what ought we do about it?

  3. To think I almost bought a Volvo too!! Make me shudder!

Seriously, we need to think BIG and have a clear out, stop buying inferior rubbish from the SP Hell.

    Think big Celtic

    KINGLuBO

  4. TONYDONNELLY67 on 26TH AUGUST 2015 8:15 AM

The ones that are not buying the EL is your choice, it means your not supporting the club and that is your choice also, I’ll be buying mine and you won’t be there, so pick up your toys and go f.,. Yourself, you are poor excuses for supporters and have been just dying for this result, lots of people got what they have been begging for, a Celtic defeat, lurking Huns, dummy splitters, PL haters, RD haters, board haters GIRFUYs.

It wasn’t a good performance last night, we get that ffs, but the predictables are expected, and as usual way over the top, Celtic supporters my faking arse.

Your an embarrassment to real Celtic supporters, same as some of the players last night, I’m not naming names acting like a DR columnist or a Hun it is what it is, we lost that’s it, it’s over we move on, I’ll hope and support the club for better results till they put me in my box, unhappy? Pizzed off? Yes I am, take it on the chin I will, but not from the Huns in here, or anywhere else.

    You tell the bassas Tony.Celtic fans,my @rse.

    Maybe that is Roony’s masterplan.

Players have to play together long enough to gel as a unit, not be talking daily with their agent and the papers about a ‘big-money’ move.

Solution? Buy players who will never be good enough for a big-money move.

    Feckin genius,that!

    Just checked that page,mate.

    Bloody hell…

  7. Huge pressure on players and Ronny last night. Since the season started all the media and indeed fans have been saying Season is dependant on 1 game. A huge burden to carry

Did they try? Course they did. Did they cope with all the pressure heaped on them. No

Don’t think any other team including Man Utd were going into these games with that same level of expectancy and demand. A lot of that team were young and inexperienced adding to the problem

Think a lot of the criticism unfair and we should be much more realistic. Yes Malmo have a lower budget than us and a much lowere expectancy hence much more focus on the game

Just my opinion and can’t wait for Saturday and the EL

  8. TCR was on end of very vicious attack looking at those photos.

Hope he is recovering well and makes full recovery.

  9. Chris Sutton called it right last night,We,the Support, and Celtic Football Club, are CL level,…

The team, the SPFL,TV revenue income etc.etc.,are EL level at best.

The task is to raise the team standards up to the supports expectation,As others have said, lets ram John Collins views down the throats of Scoddish football, 5-0 in every game and apologies to no one for doing so.

Make no mistake, nobody involved in Scoddish football will be shedding any tears on last nights result(despite the loss of £150,000 each),you caught the whiff last night, but Sutton nipped it in the bud before the BT presenter could set the agenda,

Where`s the EL Final this year? Any teams left with a V in their name? ;))

  10. Investment in last seasons CL nil

And you are, by calling me stupid?

Was it the Hun thing that hit a nerve?

    Bleeding ME dry?

No one is bleeding me dry, my choice is to support Celtic , and be at every home game, league, league cup, scottish cup, CL, and EL, I back everything Celtic 100% by doing that I’m STUPID.

You don’t even know the meaning of a Celtic Supporter, and the Huns in here know who they are, so don’t be playing that card.

  13. Get well soon TCR, shocking what happened

Disappointed about last night in particular doing the basics right, what happened?

Poor team display and shocking officials, who knew the same guy in the SC semi final against ICT would be Malmo last night?

Celtic yesterday and today, it could be worse but as well always say YNWA!

  14. This Wee Danny TCR on front of the paper…I called up to see him before I finished my shift last night, and he was sleeping like a baby…I spoke to earlier in the day and passed on all your good wishes..He said thanks a million..He is being well cared for and is in a room with a good friend of his own Hughie Wilkinson…Two finer men you would not meet…Danny had another comfortable night last night and is on the way back..https://twitter.com/beltel/status/636443911691616256

  15. TCR get well . Sounds like it may not be a quick recovery but look after yourself and don’t let the bastards get to you.

  16. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

My respect goes out to the season ticket holders and the fholks who ceaselessly plough a good percentage of their time and hard earned wages into the club.

It’s easy to jump on a bandwagon,I’m no happy clapper nor board hater however, there is something fundamentally wrong in the state of Celtic Park,I’m no financial, club structure or footballing wizard but I noted a comment through the night from somebody that always deserves to be read and I can’t disagree on the likes of Paul Lambert being brought in.

To me perhaps were destined and best suited to a quality ex player as manager from Scotland, perhaps the continental approach just doesn’t work for us in Europe to the standard we need.

That said I’m not booting Ronny out the door, the guts proved he can win the league under heavy pressure and apologies but I can live with that.

I’ve never felt so speechless watching us as I did last night, sober anaw which’ll no be happenin’ again.

Is it Ronny,Lawwell,Park, the Scottish nucleus of our side, zonal marking feck I don’t know but I don’t feel in too much of a position to hammer an agenda.

    Just win the league Celtic.

  17. glendalystonsils on

I hear that the woman who washes the strips at Celtic Park has been sacked for washing them on too hot a setting.

Apparently the shirts have shrunk to fit inferior players.

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

It is easy after the event to say Ronny selected the wrong team what is more important to me than the team selection is why did we go out with a whimper ? I also saw last night that VVD has faults he had a poor game and did not organise the defence.I hate us being beaten but if we go down fighting it takes some of the pain away but last night there was no fight.H.H.

  19. PARKHEADCUMSALFORD on 26TH AUGUST 2015 9:53 AM

For me, Sunday football, as it will now be, has to be a 3pm kick off. Otherwise, that’s another season I can’t attend home matches.

Sunday matches also make it more difficult for me

This season looks like my last as a season ticket holder, Next season will see Sevco back, i wont attend ! and the now inevitable Europa league schedule, it just wont be worth the expense for the few games i will be able to go to

  20. It was the head in the sand from their support that got the hun liquidated.

And we have supporters advocating the same for us, back the board till the cows come home, ask no questions.

If brains were chocolate, most of yous couldn’t fill a smartie.

  21. world peace is none of your business on

i always thought it was just one of these football sayings when i heard the phrase, players hiding, but last night in the second half you could actually see players not wanting a pass coming their way.for a 19 year old having his first real important game i thought saidy janko did well and was one of the few who got more than a five out of ten.

malmo played this tie perfectly off the park saying celtic was the draw they wanted, right away they look like the superior team.all the other things they said just put doubt in the celtic players minds and that is why they were spooked last night.

  22. i'vehadtochangemyname on

    Morning all

St j can give us a run for our money at the weekend. Not sure how well they’re playing at the mo. Pity we didn’t stick a few in against those roasters last night if for tcr and nothing else.

Anyway back to being a huge fish in a tiny pond. The difference between the big tv leagues and us is strangling us. No idea how to solve it – keep trying to scrat about for decent players, spend and get into debt for overpaid English league players, fugg knows what’ll happen when the incompetents get back, the hype will be unbearable but the quality will be Shi*. In the meantime play roulette in August hoping to get into the champions league. That’s our lot at the moment.

    Great post,mate.

  24. Joe Filippis Haircut on

One thing I should say that Malmo are the first Swedish team to beat Celtic over two legs.So well done Malmo and good luck for the rest of the CL. H.H.

  25. TBB

We’re winning way more than half of our qualification ties. We only lost one of six this year. :)

We’re on a repetitive cycle with players and managers, bring them in, they learn from their mistakes while we suffer, they improve personally, they move on better. Repeat.

Ronny will have a stronger mentality and hopefully more cohesion in his team next year. The trick will be holding on to him and allowing him some squad stability for a 4th and 5th crack.

  26. I’m trying to console myself by thinking that we will earn more points in the Europa League, that our young players will learn from this and we’ll be stronger next year. It’s not really working.

We started well last night. Forrest on the right and Armstrong on the left were keeping possession, gaining ground and threatening to create. But we gradually lost the midfield and their supply dried up. I think teams are coming to realise how important Nir Bitton is to us and prioritising stopping him playing. We need a plan B.

At half time I was still confident. It was a tale of two corners. Theirs went in off a shoulder. Ours was disallowed for no reason,

In the second half we didn’t keep the ball, we didn’t create. James Forrest fared mush less well on the left. Kris Commons, as always, needs to be played centrally. A third corner was to prove decisive. When we needed to score we only created half chances.

Going out at this stage is always a major disappointment. But it was the tame manner of the exit that will live long. When we were 2 – 0 up in the early stages of the home leg we were in control of the tie and could have finished it. At 3 – 1 with seconds to go we were in a very strong position. Yet me managed to limp out in the end. At our best we were more than capable of finishing the job. We failed to do so.

It’s going to be another long season now. We’ll win the league. Well try for the treble. The Thursday night ties will offer some little distraction. But we need to be thinking now about next year’s qualifying campaign. Another failure is too bleak to contemplate.

  27. ST you are the type of Celtic Supporter I have listened to and sat beside – occassionaly for years. Very quick to criticise -same song over and over (see what I did there?) but no ideas or vision of your own. By all means have a go but please change the record. I’m hurting as much as I assume you are but let’s have some constructive criticism not the eternal PL’s bonus mantra. £50m where’s that from? Undoubtely not qualifying cost us but so did not winning the thing. Not expecting you to agree with me but try embracing another point of view. H H Hebcelt

  28. A couple of thoughts:

Where the players ‘spooked’ as Gordon Strachan said of our away match at Benfica?

I read Barcabhoy on twitter advocating a senior player or two (with no resale value) to help the younger players particularly in Europe.

I agree with TBB, it looked like something happened prior to the match and we were completely dishevelled.

That Malmo side were no great shakes.

I had asked Celtic not to concede sloppy goals. Let’s face it we have been losing silly goals lately.

We cannot defend throw-ins and corners. One of the throw-ins travelled 25 yards through the middle of the park!!

    That’ll do for now.

    Árd Macha

    Árd Macha

  29. I think we can all agree that the performance last night was far short of what was expected or acceptable.

Everyone will have a view on the reasons and have a right to express them on here without being called a hun. Surely that is what the blog is for.

Imho we lost this tie at home 2-0 up within 15 mins we should have put them to the sword and failed to do so.

Ronnie says he takes the blame, which he is. But the players also must take their share – too many went missing, even broonie.

  30. I read Barcabhoy on twitter advocating a senior player or two (with no resale value) to help the younger players particularly in Europe.

Been saying that for years now.

And if we look in the right places, we can get them for free, just have to weigh in with serious wages for them, but it doesn’t fit the model, so it won’t happen.

  31. I’m fed up taking it on the chin.

How many defeats like this are we supposed to watch before things improve.

As for RD saying Celtic were “Frightened”…..yes Frightened.

What the feck is going on.

Now we have a team we are frightened to play.

I wonder how frightened they would be, if they had to depend on food banks to live.

    Total pish

These players, our players, paid thousands a week….were frightened.

Shameful hero worship of businessmen….who are driving Celtic to the bottom.

I’m fed up taking it on the chin…..and why is it always the supporters who pay the price for failure?

Nobody, and I mean nobody is bigger than Celtic….the day that PL and his lackeys are more important than the team on the park….is the day they need to be gone.

    Stop the excuses.

    Take some responsibility.

  32. playing a back 4 like that in that game last night after 6-8 weeks back.

After all the bullshit about being prepared for CL, was a disgrace.

Deila and the board should be strung up for that alone.

we can make all the excuses we can muster about last night.

we are simply not good enough.

anyone who thinks otherwise is barking.

theres no excuse being beaten by a team of Malmo’s size/standing.

    none whatsoever.

vvd is now for the off.

    boyata is an absolute howler…

    central defence needs an overhaul.

get big chocolate legs lustig off the wage bill.

Janko when fit will do as well.

izzy, the boo bhoys favourite puts more effort into it

than any of the wasters we had on show last night.

brown and johansen only interested in picking fights with players, these two should be severely bollocked. “Ashamed of the performance”…you should be.

griffiths is spl standard no more, but a headcase into the bargain.

cifti….i had hope there, but each passing game this diminishes.

i hate the deila system. it is weak in midfield and up front.

    thats not how to win.

i hate our signing policy, it stinks to high heaven.

its not about making the team better, its only about improving the bank balance.

    but…and its a big but.

what would have been the point of getting into the CL.

we would not have invested and been absolutely scudded by the cash rich teams in there….how would that have looked? embarrassing thats how.

the europa may be the same depending on who we get.
