Malmo worries over Celtic speed and height

487

The sight of Mikael Lustig checking in at Glasgow Airport this morning was welcome, but we should be pragmatic, six days is little time for a hamstring to remedy itself from what was clearly a concerning injury on Wednesday. Mikael should go through some stringent tests tomorrow morning but if there is any doubt of his fitness, he should not be risked.

Football is a 13 or 14 man game. Ronny will want to make two, possibly three, fatigue or tactical changes. Losing a player early to injury would severely hamper his options, allowing Ronny only one change, if he wants to keep a sub for late game, or extra time, contingencies.  For what it’s worth, I believe the knocks taken by Lustig and Griffiths in the first leg cost us fresh legs, and ultimately territory, leading up to Malmo’s second.

Celtic’s perpetrations went a lot better than Malmo’s over the weekend. A comfortable win with what for all intents and purposes is our second 11, while Malmo put a full-strength team out, restored those suspended for last week’s Celtic game, and lost to lowly Hacken.

Journalists close to Malmo assure me the Swedes hope to tempt Celtic into an attacking formation, just as they did to Salzburg in the last round. Salzburg arrived full of confidence but were picked apart on the break. Celtic’s own pace on the break is one worry for Malmo, who want Celtic to play high up the field.  The other is defending set-pieces. Hacken, who don’t have the height advantage of Celtic, scored from a corner kick on Saturday.

Winning free kicks 30 yards from goal would be useful. This is Kris Commons territory. Kris knows how to put his body between ball and man, and wait for the barge, although James Forrest displayed the same tactical-awareness in the first leg.  I’d have Kris holding a training session tonight: “This is what to do with your first touch, this is where you put your bum, then wait….”

Protect the defence, break quickly through Forrest, Johansen and Griffiths, and allow van Dijk, Boyata, Bitton, Griffiths and Lustig/Ambrose to give Malmo something to worry about at set-pieces, and we’ll win this game.

I can’t tell if your serious or not.

Joe Hansen has 4 assists and 2 goals in the CL qualifiers already. He has a goal and an assist in the league as well.

    He’s been great.

Efe was team scape goat, a position he inherited from samaras, though I heard Izzi was disappointed that he didn’t get the job.

However last Saturday the Cqn blog police, keepers of the holy flame, declared a fatwa on all those who slag off Efe and so verily did the position of team scape goat pass to johansen. ..though apparently ciftci thought the honour would be his. ..

Celtic’s invaluable European experience swept away the super confident Swedes in Malmö tonight. The irresistible attacking force of Leigh Griffiths aided and abetted by Wee Jamesy Forrest saw Celtic race into a first half lead which saw Age’s doos reeling on the ropes before the whistle ended the first spinning 45 minutes.

A brief rally by the Swedes saw them pull one back as a deflection from Rosenbergs bahookey deceived Craig Gordon at the front post. It’ was too little too little by the Swedes as Efe Ambrose restored Celtic’s two goal advantage two minutes later, rising majestically to nod home a well placed Johansen corner.

The Norwegian was on hand ten minutes late to make it four, sweeping home past the child like goalie whose pink jersey made him somehow look like a wee fat advert for bacon.

Super Leigh Griffiths ended the scoring as he out jumped the whole Malmö defence(again).Forrest, Johansen, Izziguirre, Griffiths…Goal.

The Swedes trudged from the field dejectedly as the Celtic team celebrated wildly with a hardy bunch of travelling fans in the far corner of the stadium.

Several travelling Scottish media hacks were seen to be visibly puking as the fourth and fifth goals went in, notably Keith Jackson was rushed to hospital suffering from an acute bile attack. Nurses later said he was babbling incoherently…”same club, same club, same club” until he had to be medicated to improve his sanity.

BBC reports of the game are low key and held in a queue, they will be posted on the website after the stories and dramas of tonights Scottish League Cup games, hopefully sometime later in the week lest they upset any members of the general public prone to crimpoline, bobbly 90’s tops and Scotsmac…

Seen them come and seen them go.

Every one of them was a better player than I ever was.

Johansen was good enough last season, and will be again. Izzy is the best left-back since the two Tams,Boyd and Gemmell.

James Forrest and Efe need support not abuse. I like to consider myself a Celtic supporter and if others want to dwell on the negatives of our players, that’s their call.

  14. I’ve thought since last Wednesday that Nir Bitton’s injury was a bigger concern than Mikael Lustig’s, and agree with the fans who saw Lustig’s pain close up , that six days is unlikely to cure him enough to start a CL league game. Even if he makes it, he may be using up a valuable subs spot, in a highly tactical battle where RD is likely to use all three on the bench., as usual.

RD has the straight choice of Saidy Janko with no experience or Efe Ambrose with loads, for the right back slot.

With the exception of Emilio Izzaguire being able to hold off Charlie Mulgrew for No 3 jersey, the rest of the team just about self selects?

  15. If lustig is anywhere near fit I would start him.. Personally haven’t seen janko play but he would be my 2nd choice.

Don’t wanna get on the efe bandwagon bashing but out of all our players he is most prone to make a costly mistake so I’d leave him out.

Maybe play janko in front of lustig on right hand side so lustig doesn’t have to run up and down the wing too much plus by sounds of it janko seems more willing to help defensively than Forrest..tough call for ronnie.

That’s why he’s on the big bucks.

Look – no one will be more delighted if we win tonight – however instead of having a go at me and calling me a hun …etc

Give me some evidence, based on our recent performances, that we can bear Malmo on their own patch.

If we can manage it, I will be found dancing with the postman, who like me, is a ST holder of many years standing – btw I have always upgraded my ST over the years, I am now good hospitality, at a cost of £1400/year.

I don’t trust the players, and that is why I can’t see us go through – like you. I hope I am wrong.

  18. Glad Celtic will be playing in the cooler climes of Sweden to-night and have not to endure the sweltering temperatures of Telaviv or Nicosia with the barometer still up at the ninety degree mark.

I give you AWAY TO QUARABAK, oh, ye of little faith… Negatonians should only be seen when we get beat….. Predicting defeat only defeats the purpose of being a supporter…..reminds me of the peepul mentality :)

  20. So hopefully the Great Wall here in Beijing is indicative of what we might put up tonight.

Apparently Confucius is know to have said “he who does not concede in the away leg is likely to live longer and prosper”.

I am not sure if he also said ” he who scores an away goal is likely to live longer with lower blood pressure and less risk of heart failure”

Either way I have yet to find the Beijing No1 CSC for the 2.45am kick off here and I will be relying on CQN updates and decent internet connection, so I know that my old ticker will be feeling the pressure somewhat for a punishing couple of hours.

I wouldn’t have it any other way …….
