Manager happy with preparations ahead of tomorrow

Half the battle when it comes to PR is not to score an own goal, which Neil Lennon managed to do in his pre-match press conference today when asked about the local ‘tradition’ of ritualistic animal slaughter before the game.  “You have to respect the traditions in Kazakhstan, they have a different culture.  We have our traditions.

“Our scouts watched Shakhter’s game against Astana on Friday.  We know the played a weakened team.

“We arrived early to adapt to the weather condition.  The journey went well.

“Tomorrow we play against a strong team.  It’s important to get a good result in the first game to increase our chances of reaching the Champions League group stage.”

Really looking forward to this one now.

  1. To give some idea of the type of opponents Celtic face tomorrow night we can look at some recent results against Irish teams in the last two years.

St Patricks Athletic played Shakhter in the Europa Lge in 2011 and were beaten 2-1 away but won 2-0 in Dublin winning the tie 3-2 aggregate score.

In 2012 the ROI played Kazakhstan away in the first game of the current World Cup and were extremely lucky to win the game 2-1 with goals coming in the final minutes with Kevin Doyle coming off the bench to score and then set up the winning goal. The Kazakhs were by far the better side on the night and it must be remembered that all except two of their players were from local sides.

The ROI side was composed of mostly mid to lower EPL players. This win probably saved coach Giovanni Trapattoni’s job.

There is no doubt Celtic’s task won’t be easy and these guys will be up for it.

Interesting to see who Neil will go with in central defence. I like the look of Myokolo seeing him for the first time in Dublin against Liverpool never seen Virgil so it will probably will be Charlie or Mikael. Balde had a great game against Pool, impressed. Will Neil play him?

Celtic have a good record in this part of the world and let’s hope tradition prevails and we manage a result and score an away goal. We are within touching distance of the Champions Lge. C’mon the Hoops.

  2. Amazing how the MSM here seem to know the rules on pros betting but not holding to account a dead club and an association bending and breaking the rules of licensing and paying tax.

    A class act the boy.

City started like a whirlwind. Krul with 2 superb saves before Silva finally makes it 1-0.

  18. Do you think having somebody reveal they know your betting habits would encourage a top level midfielder sign for a 4th tier club? Rather than just the money? I mean I’m pretty sure he could have found another club.

BT, not sure i’d be surprised if there was, however she’s only half an hour from Dubai and taxis are cheap, game should be kicking off 7pm her time so its not a late one. If we get to CL group she will be seeing matches ko at 11.45pm!!! Its difficult to find pubs that are willing to show our games over EPL teams as we know, she could get it on a stream if she wanted but my advice is use it to get to know people unless she has a circle of friends already.

Does anyone think that while all these qualifiers last season, this season and probably next season, while totally galling, are actually helping Celtic to develop as a team and try out tactics and formations before the actual main event ( not taking Shakter Karagandy for granted). If we reach the group stages we will already have played 6 competitive games in the competition and our players will surely be up for each game rather than facing them with trepidation.

I don’t know if my nerves are up to it each year though.

An earlier poster included the article about Motherwell’s Steve Jennings being arrested after he was sent off in a game versus Hearts (from 2010). This was not that recently though.

Wayne Rooney’s father was also arrested.

Seems not unreasonable that the bookies would spot the suspicious activity.
