Managerial appointments

725

Middlesbrough finished a point off the play-offs in the English Championship last season, which was not enough to save manager, Tony Pulis, from the sack.  Pulis is an experienced hand with teams fighting relegation from the Premiership or looking for promotion to it, having worked at Stoke, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

A month after the sacking, Middlesbrough gave rookie, Jonathan Woodgate, the job, with former Celtic striker, Robbie Keane his assistant.

Football teams have a tendency to overcompensate for their last perceived mistakes when appointing a manager.  Pulis was taken from a regular, if uninspiring, stock.  They have not made that ‘mistake’ with Woodgate.

The former Real Madrid defender will bring colour and excitement to the Riverside, at least in the short-term, but his chances of out-performing Pulis next season are open to debate.  Middlesbrough have the resources to attract managerial talent from most leagues in Europe or South America.  While these territories have worked well for others seeking improvement in England, there are significant risks.

Like Sunderland, who appointed St Mirren manager, Jack Ross, a year ago, they could have looked to less-risky Scotland, but can you name an appropriate candidate who would be up for this one?

Appointing a rookie is a big roll of the dice, to be avoided if possible.  But anyone who tells you appointing a sure-fire success is easy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.  All you can hope to do is avoid sure-fire failures.

Hullo again all you young rebels.

G’day to you bhoys and ghirls, yes this is another day in your blessed Celtic life.

PARKHEADCUMSALFORD has hit the nail on the head what our Celtic family

    have been up against.

Blatant institutionalised bigotry, and they don’t try to hide it.

    What to do eh?

Well treble trebles for a start, and that is only accomplished by being the best,

and that is only possible with the continued support from the Celtic family.

Some fans have thrown the towel in and they don’t go to games, or they don’t

want to give money in any form towards the club because of their perceived

    image of the plc’s parsimony.

In my mind it’s their loss, and my arguments won’t change their dogma or mine

theirs, but i’m willing to bet when the Celtic land another treble they’ll be the

first to say i’m a Celtic supporter to whoever is within listening distance.

Just my experience over many, many years.

He does, and he’s got a big job to do rubbing shoulders, and running against the tide of the anybody but Celtic agenda, including office at Hampden, where he deals in an organisation that is proven to be corrupt, but of which we are mere ‘single’ members.

SMSM are working overtime for the Sunday editions of how they can make the Turnbull transfer the same as the McGinn transfer, and how its all Celtic’s fault, the Daily Express are ahead of the game and the player is now David, not Turnbull.

Celtic are apparently ‘notorious’ for low balling clubs, and ‘underpaying’ young players. All lapped up by the huns, and the naive Celtic supporters, who’ll fill their Hotlines, I prefer Lyon’s view of Celtic as very tough negotiators, when using our own money, and no face painting.

Celtic don’t make a statement cue cynicism on the internet, Celtic newsroom tweet same result cynicism on the internet. Celtic nipped in the bud agent antics, a young player away on holiday, is left in Limbo somewhere between £600 basic at Motherwell, and £12,000 a week.

I agree with other bloggers Celtic should pull the plug on them all.

    Rant over

Are we now at the stage that young high potential Scottish players are out of our reach? Time to step it up and let Celtic realise its potential which the current strategy won’t do. Who has the growth vision?

    ——————

    Intriguing post.

I assumed that our fundemantial strategy was to bring the best young players through from our world class facility at Lennoxtown. That is why we invest so heavily in this department.

Then sign a few quality non projects who can step immediately into the first team.

We do npt need squad players who may not get a game or are subsequently loaned out.

In that regard I am not really bothered if David Turnbull signs or not.

Probably a similar view to the rest of our amazing support who have just financially demonstrated a massive show of support to the team.

Might be worthwhile, looking at the bigot ref’s games involving us and his heroes…

  7. If, as some people would argue, there is only 1 rangers then why is it not the 4 way agreement?

  8. onenightinlisbon on

Turnbull is young. His head should be full of winning cups and medals but these don’t seem to matter. Cash is king, let him ply his trade in the lower English leagues where he will have a nice bank balance but nothing to show his kids and grandkids.

While you are on you might be able to answer this one for me.

I was eating in a tidy wee Brasserie in Paris last week and seated next to 2 Aussie women and they were eating seafood.

One of the women got out her mobile phone and showed me a picture of her King Island Lobster- (naw- it’s no a euphemism) and it looked huge.

Have you ever seen or eaten one?

The women told me that the Chinese pay top dollar for them.

Oh look at you, eating in a wee brassier in Paris lol.

No never eaten one, but most of the seafood here is huge and i’m

surprised Aussie women having such refined taste there normally

like myself, tatties, pies and beans, think it’s their Scots/Irish

    heritage.

And by the way absolutely love your indefatigable (sic ) debates with

    Mahe, Bourne, Madmitch, et al.

Love to hear the tales from all our far flung Celts. I have a sister-in-law in Melbourne but I’ve never visited.

The pic that the Oz lady showed me would give you a good few days of eating. Are you dumping anything radioactive into those waters?

I love fish and seafood generally- looks like Oz has some great options. How’s the Ould boyfriend of Sheena Easton doing these days? He used to post here but lost interest after Samaras left.

I’ve now got this picture in my head of Giorgios Samaras as Sheena Easton with a beard.

  14. I agree that the club should tell Turnbull’s agent to do one, if we gave our own the chance, like Ewan Henderson a proper run in the team we would find he is worth far more than the £3 mill we are willing to pay for the boy, the boy who could fade away as quickly as he has burst on to the scene, give our own a chance before buying others, tell them to gtf.

  15. The more i read about this Turnbull deal i thinks its becoming clearer that he or someone close to him doesn’t want him to sign for us. He has possibly priced himself out of the deal deliberately or just isn’t backing himself to make it at Celtic. Or he just doesn’t like Celtic. With no other bids in play i cant see any other logic. Looks very much like the deal is dead.

Sheena easton with a beard, think i lumbered a few of them in my

    Barrowland youth days lol.

Quite a few Oz posters missing lately, but they’ll come back in their own time.

Nothing much gets pumped into the waters here as they’re very strict but the

continent is so vast and only twenty odd million people so they don’t get over

fished i suppose, and the wee fishes get big.

Get yourself over here, would luv to buy you a pint.

Imagine you get a chance to play for the famous Glasgow Celtic and you turn it down…

Always said I’d play for Celtic for nothing…and the offer still stands…

  18. Imo, the sooner we focus on getting a right and left back, centre half and, Ghod be good to us, a centre forward, the better.

We don’t need a midfield player, however young and Scottish he is. Again, imo, young Henderson has the potential to reach the top.

Concentrate, Celtic, on our real needs.

By the way, I mentioned a left back because we need to avoid Kieran Tierney getting burn out or serious injury, as he gets hacked, with impunity, just about every game he plays.

Big Mike Ashley judgement in !

    ———/-

HEBCELT – looks like judgement was against ‘Rangers’ on all points. Essentially Ashley has rights to market Rangers gear. Agreement that Rangers has to give SD option to retain right to market their stuff – effectively in perpetuity – remains in place. Judge effectively saying it isn’t his place to dig Rangers out of the shit deal they made with SD. I think Rangers can still test in Court of Appeal.

    I think !!!
