Managerial appointments

725

Middlesbrough finished a point off the play-offs in the English Championship last season, which was not enough to save manager, Tony Pulis, from the sack.  Pulis is an experienced hand with teams fighting relegation from the Premiership or looking for promotion to it, having worked at Stoke, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

A month after the sacking, Middlesbrough gave rookie, Jonathan Woodgate, the job, with former Celtic striker, Robbie Keane his assistant.

Football teams have a tendency to overcompensate for their last perceived mistakes when appointing a manager.  Pulis was taken from a regular, if uninspiring, stock.  They have not made that ‘mistake’ with Woodgate.

The former Real Madrid defender will bring colour and excitement to the Riverside, at least in the short-term, but his chances of out-performing Pulis next season are open to debate.  Middlesbrough have the resources to attract managerial talent from most leagues in Europe or South America.  While these territories have worked well for others seeking improvement in England, there are significant risks.

Like Sunderland, who appointed St Mirren manager, Jack Ross, a year ago, they could have looked to less-risky Scotland, but can you name an appropriate candidate who would be up for this one?

Appointing a rookie is a big roll of the dice, to be avoided if possible.  But anyone who tells you appointing a sure-fire success is easy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.  All you can hope to do is avoid sure-fire failures.

  1. HEBCELT – as far as I can make out, the judgement favours SD and the requests that sevco were making to change the original agreements were denied.

  2. A piece of friendly advice for young Mr Turnbull, here’s somebody else who thought he was too good for Celtic and the streets were paved with gold down South:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_Feruz (hasn’t kicked a ball for 2 years).

A piece friendly of advice for Celtic, kill this deal now and start looking after some of our academy youngsters. Buying players to keep the support happy is wrong especially if with have similar/better quality at home, ie Euan Henderson.

Spend the money where we need strengthened – defence and up front.

  3. As I said above, the judge backed Ashely/SD on everything. The agreement that was made regarding the selling of strips, the ability to match any other offer, the amount of profit they get etc. has all been ratified, nothing changes. Big Mike still owns them.

What I can’t see, is any info. on what Sevco owe him for all of this as well as his legal fees.

Over on Follow Follow, the speculation is that it is going to cost them 5 million or so.

  4. Mick how you doing? The Huns have been fecked for 7 years but refuse to die.Joined the Social Celts a couple of weeks ago, hope to make some contributions to your charitable venture. H H to you all in Mornington

  5. Interesting blog on Videocelts regarding the former referee Brown, how much more has been accepted as banter and covered up by the Referees up here?

  6. !!Bada Bing!! on

Dessybhoy- would be interesting if the Club, or any club, asked why he was allowed to carry on when it was first discovered, was it Fleming who brushed it under the carpet?

  7. weebobbycollins on

See that carpet they’re brushing things under…it must be touching the ceiling by now…

  8. Bada

They are saying it was Fleming who was the head of refs, apparently it dates back to around the time of the email from Dallas , why he has resigned now leads me to think much more is getting covered up and he has jumped before being exposed.

I am just in from a cycle and have seen the Ashley victory over Sevco.

    One reaction on Follow Follow

This is gonna cost us millions . They judge agreed with SD on everything. If the contract states they get 95% of profit after costs. Then whatever we sold in last year they will be entitled to 95%. Then they will be entitled to damages. Which could be a extra million and then legal fees paid. This could easily go above 5 million. Starting to wonder if this is the reason we haven’t been linked to any big money signings this summer .

    Ha ha ha

  10. Hrvatski Jim on

Oh, and just to make matters worse it is agreed that Sports Direct has the right in perpetuity to match any future deal that Sevco negotiate with another party

Big Mike will be around for a while yet.

  11. eddieinkirkmichael on

The only way out of this mess for Sevco will be a pre packed admin. SDI have them by the short and curlies. I would expect the Sevvies to appeal first but to do so they have to have new grounds which haven’t been covered in previous court proceedings.

I wonder if SDI would go to court to ring fence season ticket monies prior to damages being awarded?

  12. HUNDERBIRDS ARE GONE

    Just saw your post S!

    Life’s good thanks!

Turned 70 in April and decided to retire!

Family all well too so as long as I can work through the daily “to do” list I’m in the good books!

Spent 4 days in Dublin, a birthday present, and it was a complete joy!

    And emotional too.

Heading for Stonehaven next weekend for the Beer Festival, then 2 weeks in Crete next month, so lots to look forward to.

Still on a treble high and enjoying it more each day.

Hope you and your good lady are well!

  13. “”BADA BING!!

I wasn’t having a dig last night, so no harm meant.

Apologies to the Blog for the bad language in my post which was rightly deleted.

I should know better………………at my age!

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yip, you know its serious when SMSM aren’t touching it, they are busy reporting the daisy chain of Bosman’s that head for Govan.

    Extract from Zombie Zombie ;

We’re now in a contract with SD that started in 2018 (so we owe them revenue from that year).

The judge ruled that we misinterpreted the contract that we signed, and SD were right in their interpretation. They matched the contract, so it is theirs. SD basically now have the right to match any merchandise contract, ever.

There will be seperate claims for breach of contract (will cost us millions) and Ashley is currently trying to place an injunction on Elite.

We’ve somehow ended up in a worse position that before, as we didn’t understand the contract we signed.

The board have made a right mess of it.

What was the point in paying all that money to break the 7 years rolling contract.

    Brutal stuff.

I’d imagine its a good deal worse than this.

  15. Now, as a rule – I’m cautious and fearful. I can’t help it.

I love…..LOVE…….. a laff at the huns expense and am grateful for every and any opportunity to do so.

The Ashley thing has me stumped tho’…..I keep asking myself what’s in it for Big Mick? When’s the real pay-off coming?

If anyone wanted to do a Dr Frankenstein on dead teddies, the rotund retailer would fit ( and might foot ) the bill.

    Naw?

I was having a wee lurk right at the time of your post last evening, the quickest deletion ever, I don’t usually notice deletions but some posters replied and it had already gone, made me laugh

Enjoy your retirement … although there is never much rest for the wicked :-)

  17. !!Bada Bing!! on

Philbhoy- no apology required here mate HH

But will the Lying King apologise to the hun hordes? He told them last year he paid off Ashley with £3.5 million…

  18. itscalledthemalvinas on

    Monkey Alert issued for Rutherglen.

Can hear them in the background stealing another of our songs. “The Patriot Game”

  19. Philbhoy: Happy 70th & retirement. Saw your post on Cup Final day re Bad Ass Café. Hope you enjoyed your visit to the Fair City.

  20. BANKIEBHOY1 @ 5:37 PM,

Indeed, DCK well and truely stuffed Ashley, a businessman of his repute would be a tad miffed, so revenge cannot be ruled out.

However I’m convinced there is a longer game here, DCK won a battle but I believe Ashley wants to win the war.

If he cripples Rangers merchandising arm and stymies the business as a whole…

…Remember SDI and Puma were quite prepared to ensure they had no new kit available from 2017. Rangers were not within their rights to fashion the Hummel deal.

For me Ashley has always seen the potential for Rangers, for a fraction of the investment he can have the same return as Newcastle United and European Football to boot. Also mentioned ages ago, the same livery… red, white, blue, black. The Sports Direct Stadium at Ibrox.

It’s a great fit for him. Whether he’s still interested, whether the Rangers Board will succumb, whether the fans will wear it (in more ways than one:) remains to be seen.

If, as looks likely, the Newcastle sale goes through it will be then he can make his move… his able Lieutenant Lee Charnley taking up the reigns again!?

    Could be interesting…

    Hail Hail

  21. weebobbycollins on

Something’s got to give, surely! Let’s see how you spin this Dave (via jabba)…

  22. I have said for years that my biggest fear is that Mike Ashley gains control at the new Rangers.

    King our manouvered him .

Ashley has been patient and played the long game.

He has starved them of cash at every opportunity.

He is now a step closer to being able to gain control at a cheaper price.

If he ever gains control he will outspend us .

    TT

  23. Chairbhoy………yep.

“Interesting” in the Chinese sense hopefully.

I think the prospect of a Celtic “9” or more importantly a ” 10″……..will see sufficient focus and the right “theatre” to be perfect for him and his machine to capitalise on an undervalued hun carcass……….the mood music would be perfect for XXXL teddy merchandising.

I hope Clarence sticks it out and wants to tilt at hero status with the mouth-breathers – lang may he reign!
