Managerial appointments

725

Middlesbrough finished a point off the play-offs in the English Championship last season, which was not enough to save manager, Tony Pulis, from the sack.  Pulis is an experienced hand with teams fighting relegation from the Premiership or looking for promotion to it, having worked at Stoke, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

A month after the sacking, Middlesbrough gave rookie, Jonathan Woodgate, the job, with former Celtic striker, Robbie Keane his assistant.

Football teams have a tendency to overcompensate for their last perceived mistakes when appointing a manager.  Pulis was taken from a regular, if uninspiring, stock.  They have not made that ‘mistake’ with Woodgate.

The former Real Madrid defender will bring colour and excitement to the Riverside, at least in the short-term, but his chances of out-performing Pulis next season are open to debate.  Middlesbrough have the resources to attract managerial talent from most leagues in Europe or South America.  While these territories have worked well for others seeking improvement in England, there are significant risks.

Like Sunderland, who appointed St Mirren manager, Jack Ross, a year ago, they could have looked to less-risky Scotland, but can you name an appropriate candidate who would be up for this one?

Appointing a rookie is a big roll of the dice, to be avoided if possible.  But anyone who tells you appointing a sure-fire success is easy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.  All you can hope to do is avoid sure-fire failures.

  7. Big week ahead.

Will we see Turnbull signed? I hope Lennyboy is right.

We can relish another court appearance from the GASL for breaking another contract.

Then of course the lovely town of Aberdour will brace itself for the CQN invasion, where all the Woodland, Rose and Palmer wannabes wiill strut their stuff.

And who else will rise to the surface as potential signings?

  8. ‘GG,

    Maximum respect as always.

The lad Turnbull is obviously a very good Scottish player, bags of potential. Celtic have made an offer that is very good.

Celtic have Excellent players ready to move on up and get their place in the first team, IMO.

Need to get 3+ First team players in.

Big bucks, I reckon, will be spent on them.

Neil has started it, so he will finish it.

Did I not read somewhere that we had gave Turnbull an ultimatum of yesterday???

If not I would give him an ultimatum, and if he does not sign by say Wednesday, then the deal is dead, and we move on, no one should hold our club to ransom

I imagine Turnbull is Ntcham’s replacement.

On one hand I’m happy that we are getting the player in before we sell as that is the best policy to adopt. On the other, Ntcham is a quality player (although he has lacked focus this year); Turnbull has a lot of potential.

As long as the fee for Ntcham is invested elsewhere I will be happy.

That seems to be the most likely outcome. I can’t see Turnbull remaining at Celtic for more than a couple of seasons though. Clearly his ambition is elsewhere.

I’m also disappointed by the Luca Connell news. A young lad choosing to extend his scholarship contract so he can stay at a club nearing extinction. Maybe Celtic should be looking at Harper and Aribo again..

I don’t think that’s the intention. Turnbull played his best football for Motherwell in the Tom Rogic role behind the striker. He’s certainly not regarded as a play maker like Ntcham.

I think it’s likely Ntcham will leave if we receive a good offer for an unsettled and under performing player. That would probably happen regardless of the Turnbull deal. That’s why we are interested in Arribo and Luca Connell.

Is there anything in that regarding Connell?

I heard something last week that Bolton weren’t in danger of losing him for a ‘training fee’ because he’d extended his scholarship deal or whatever, but if anything since then our interest seems to have progressed…

I can’t see him choosing to stay at a league 1 club in dire financial trouble…I think they start in League 1 on -12 points…

I don’t know where we are in regards to a potential deal but a lad signing a new deal is an indication he isnt all in on Celtic. He’s just willingly added another obstacle to get the deal done. Why?

Let’s not forget that Turnbull signed a new one year deal extension in December when his teammate Hastie signed a pre-contract with Sevco. Turnbull’s behavior since hasn’t indicated a guy who’s excited to play for Celtic.

By all means sign the guys if they will add value. But it’s clear that they are both keeping their options open and will always have an eye out for the next move.

I didn’t see confirmation anywhere that Connell had extended his scholarship deal – I guess we will know more pretty soon.

I think Turnbull has been badly advised but yes, the final call came down to him to reject the initial offer.

If he signs he will soon know he has to get the head down if he wants the career trajectory he thinks he is capable of,

  24. In this year where we’ve all had to confront the mortality of the team’s historical greats, for me the contrast between the lives of the young Lions and those of our newest players ( or potential recruits) has never been more stark.

How different their respective lives are while plying the same trade.

“It is not yet known what fee has been offered by Neil Lennon’s treble-winning side but sources at Wanderers say they are under no pressure to sell with a change of control at the club close.

Furthermore, it has recently emerged that the 12-month extension to Connell’s scholarship contract means there is no longer the risk of losing the midfielder’s services via a ‘training fee’.”

You must remember these guys are just kids starting out in their working life…parents usually are very, very important at that stage…however, I don’t know what advice they are receiving nor who is giving it to them…even parents can be swayed by pushy agents…it will all work out in the end though…

I quite like the fact we haven’t heard a peep from young Turnbull … agents will do as agents do .. maybe the kid signed a contract with the agent and has to abide by his contract …

I really want him to sign … but again what you don’t have you’ll never miss … and I would ask young Euan Henderson if he fancies a wee year long loan at Motherwell to give the bhoy game time

  31. I really hope NL is more decisive in sending the youngins on loan.

If Motherwell genuinely want Henderson & Johnston and will play them then send them out.

We have a surplus in midfield.

Let’s do what it best for us and the players. Motherwell are getting big bucks for their player and hopefully reinvest it (probably with another hammer thrower from England).

Would Motherwell develop these two? Hibs and Aberdeen a better bet or even Killie but Motherwell? Not for me.

Johnston needs to hit the weights as much as the pitch this season. Still a wee (yet talented) bhoy…

For the LW position we have Sinclair, Hayes, Arzani and Shved (though he normally plays RW)

That’s a lot of guys to sitting in the stand.

I think Stephen Robertson of Motherwell is a good coach. He has very little to work with in resources but has managed to rebuild his team. He has hammer throwers like everyone else but clearly he gives youngsters a chance too.

I’d rather have sent them to Hibs or Killie last season but Neil Lennon and Steve Clarke aren’t there anymore.

Maybe Aberdeen but they haven’t showed any interest in MJ.

These young lads may have what it takes but let them go out on loan. We can re-evaluate MJ next season when we have let Hayes and Sinclair leave.

  34. Timaloy29

    I think that’s fair.

I beleive Schved and Arzani are more RW cutting in from the left Paddy Roberts types so that could be 3 over there (with James as current first pick).

Hayes will stay (although doesn’t inspire me), Sinclair will probably go (but I hope not) and it’s an area rife for kicking with the SPFL hatchet men so expect us to need a lot of personnel there.

Good choices to have in the main. More priority areas elsewhere.
