Managerial appointments

725

Middlesbrough finished a point off the play-offs in the English Championship last season, which was not enough to save manager, Tony Pulis, from the sack.  Pulis is an experienced hand with teams fighting relegation from the Premiership or looking for promotion to it, having worked at Stoke, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

A month after the sacking, Middlesbrough gave rookie, Jonathan Woodgate, the job, with former Celtic striker, Robbie Keane his assistant.

Football teams have a tendency to overcompensate for their last perceived mistakes when appointing a manager.  Pulis was taken from a regular, if uninspiring, stock.  They have not made that ‘mistake’ with Woodgate.

The former Real Madrid defender will bring colour and excitement to the Riverside, at least in the short-term, but his chances of out-performing Pulis next season are open to debate.  Middlesbrough have the resources to attract managerial talent from most leagues in Europe or South America.  While these territories have worked well for others seeking improvement in England, there are significant risks.

Like Sunderland, who appointed St Mirren manager, Jack Ross, a year ago, they could have looked to less-risky Scotland, but can you name an appropriate candidate who would be up for this one?

Appointing a rookie is a big roll of the dice, to be avoided if possible.  But anyone who tells you appointing a sure-fire success is easy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.  All you can hope to do is avoid sure-fire failures.

Re Turnbull being 19. OE is our most expensive signing and was only 21. I would imagine his wage (notwithstanding his age) is one of the highest at the club.

The transfer fee is likely to be a good indicator of a player’s wage at any club. Mulumbu may be older than Turnbull but I doubt we will be offering Turnbull the same wage as free-agent purchase Mulumbu is on. Similarly, I doubt Lewis Morgan and Turnbull’s contracts would be on the same terms.

Philbhoy…what we want is a striker, a serious striker to assist Eddie and Griff next season. We musn’t be caught short again…

Any young player who choses Barnsley over Celtic clearly has doubts about his own ability and his chances of hitting the big time.

    Or the opposite ?

I’m not aware of Barnsley having a reputation for being a springboard for up and coming young players.

Not compared to Celtic at least.

Effectively calling Celtic mugs ( KevJung ) and antagonistic, even when its cordial opinion, is bound to go down like Rainjurz did, on any Celtic Blog.

Sentinel Celts nicely done, user friendly, and advert free, is great but the basis of any Celtic Blog, is Celtic, there is nobody challenging Sentinel opinion ( from what I can see on their Blog ) and its clear that some of its posters pop back here to challenge Paul67’s remote and rhetorical lead.

CQN remains a magnet to which they are drawn mostly in current times to board bash, which a lot of more mature Celtic fans find tiresome, and some downright anti Celtic.

Nothing worse than dipping in and out of the Aegean Sea (EC67) drying off, and finding your club getting panned on CQN.

If you are asking with respect to the 6WA (no one on here will be surprised to hear that I dont believe for a second that Celtic weren’t privy to this, even if not a signatory), my answer would be ‘ more than some, probably, less than others, almost certainly’.

And, if you were asking generally, I would probably answer the same way. :)

I think the Club were absolutely right to make a statement, we all know the truth, seems the offer to sign is on the table until Sunday.

i dont have time but yes I would prefer the masses withhold season ticket money until a clean fair game is delivered and forgive me but thats how I feel.

    @ !!BADA BING!! on 14TH JUNE 2019 7:51 PM

If Sevco made that statement we would be pissing ourselves.

Agents are notorious for this kind of behaviour. Their mandate is to get the best deal for their client (which presumably equates to “most money now”). We will be making statements weekly if we get pissed with an agent everytime he demands more money for his client.

  12. !!Bada Bing!! on

Turnbull should look at Leo MacLeod and Ryan Gauld…..look how their careers ‘developed ‘….but given the Club statement, his ship has sailed….

  13. THCH

Unlike you I start off on the premise that we back Celtic ( Whoever it is? ) and not the incoming player, or his agent, in the wages and terms offered.

I’m happy that Celtic ( Whoever it is? ) offered the best wage we possibly could, to David Turnbull, and he, or his agent rejected them.

You start off by concluding “ its another mess of a transfer “

If you object to Celtic’s wage structure, ( as you tend to do ) write to them, find out what it is, ask for a meeting with Celtic ( Whoever it is?) and find out if we’re underpaying footballers.

Come back on, and let us know how you get on.

I have never been one for getting upset if players dont want to sign …. but, if the options are either blaming a 19 year old kid, or blaming his poor, innocent (probably a lawyer) agent…. I say….

bloody teenagers cant trust them. good riddance.

The Hands- as a critic of the Club for not spending money when it’s obviously required, i think the statement sends the message that we won’t be held to ransom by a a guy and his agent, who is 19 years old and has played 1 season in Scottish football, so this time, i totally agree it was good to know exactly what the situation is IMO HH

    Misrepresenting what i said.

“Whatever the cause of this (player greed or the club’s poor offer), it is another mess of a transfer.”

It is a mess played out in the public domain, but who knows where the blame lies.

Yes, I’m sceptical regarding Celtic’s transfer dealings after the last 3 window, the public fallout with BR, the leaked board minutes, the McGinn cock-up tc.

Celtic will not pay over the odds for players! However, we will pay our CEO £3m a year (equivalent to top EPL sides). Priorities.

  18. !!Bada Bing!! on

Philbhoy- i was being facetious, but seems he has until Sunday to decide. I don’t think Motherwell will be too chuffed either, happy with the offer, and a chance of Morgan or Johnson on loan.HH

Don’t agree with that, I’m not bashing the Club, in fact I’ve gone out of my way to differentiate the Club and the Executive that currently controls it.

  25. Chairbhoy sorry for delay in replying was out for a walk along the Banks if the Suir.

I wouldn’t say the Club has treated Mik badly unless he was verbally promised something which was not delivered.

He had a generous contract reputed to be second highest earner behind Brooney. Celtic kept their side of contract, obviously going forward they saw Mik as a back up, playing a lot less games & offered him a 2 yr deal on reduced terms to reflect his new role, There is nothing particularly wrong with doing that. I suspect that the option is still valid & Celtic are trying to get a right back. As we can see today these things are not straight forward. If Celtic don’t get their man in time I expect they will exercise their option & Mik will be with us for a further year.

I love Mik & hope he stays but time waits for no man, Celtic are playing it to the benefit of the Club and that is how it should be.
