In a genuine attempt to explain how I personally feel, while not wishing to speak for others, I suspect that there may be many who feel similar….
Starting with the facts that are easy to recognize and quantify, the club has done incredibly well since Fergus saved us and set us on the path of enlightenment 30-years ago. First we overcame the odds to stop-the-10, and then went on to dominate the last 25-years.
We would have arguably won more in that first decade had it not been for the financial doping at 1872, but when they paid the ultimate price for that (save for the retrospective penalties), we have been cleaning up ever since while enjoying the absence of a serious challenger for most of that time.
There have been a few bumps in the road, and the COVID season was dreadful, but in the whole, on a purely trophy count basis, it has been quite remarkable.
There have been occasional European highlights, but nothing that we’ve been able to sustain in a way which created a new and realistic baseline expectation.
Our dominance of the domestic scene delivered trebles and doubles on a regular basis, with access to the CL in all but one of the last 15-years. Consistent with these important contributors, our revenues have continued to grow, just as our dominance became more evident. Being the “top dog” by some distance has afforded the club opportunities, and has helped mask some of our failures. For example, we’ve had the luxury of being able to speculate on players without the pressure of always needing them to hit the ground running, while at the same time, even when our acquisitions have been substandard or if we were rocked by a list of injuries, we have had enough in the tank to get the job done. Benefiting from this, we established a “player trading” model, although I would contend it was never as sophisticated as some might like that to sound. Player recruitment has still appeared more than a little haphazard at times, but the successes outnumbered the failures in the overall, and I’m sure that the accounting ledger would confirm the same.
So, why the discontent: with all of the structural and endemic advantages we’ve enjoyed, how is it that we have not truly kicked on?
Consider what could be on the list of things that would have represented real progress over this period:
– Expanding and diversifying the “business” by developing the hotel and museum project
– Creating greater revenue capacity by replacing the main stand and updating facilities in the other stands
– Hosting a 2027 UEFA final in an improved overall stadium (meeting their requirements)
– Competing in the CL group stages more frequently than our “near peers”
In respect of the last point, it should be noted that the following list of near peers have performed better than us in qualifying for the CL group stages (or beyond); Ajax, PSV, Brugge, Galatasaray, Olympiakos, RB Salzburg.
If I were completing a performance review for the board, the above would be my starting point, and then I would invite them to present anything else that they would like to have considered. Bottom line, they would have got pass marks for most of the last 15-years but not much better.
But, then we would get to the calamitous 2025/26 season, and aside from the over-discussed managerial and player recruitment debacles, we’d be addressing the obvious dysfunction of the board itself. Not only do we have a temporary chairman, open director positions, and committees which are not properly covered, but the club itself has been at war with a large part of its fan base. Add to that the lack of imagination in reappointing MON, and the nonsense surrounding Maloney and Fozzie.
Then there is the counterpoint; we won the double and the share price is up!!
If that is where the conversation finishes, then we may have more success but it is only a matter of time before this catches up with us.
