Managerial talent

1363

Derek Adams propensity to waste time and then complain about time being added on should not obscure the fact that he is a remarkably productive football manager.  Ross County, from Dingwall, population 5,000, are sitting fourth in the SPL and remain in touching distance of a place in Europe.  No need to highlight their Scottish Cup campaign in 2010.

It is, therefore, no surprise that Aberdeen have asked Ross County for permission to speak to him.  On the face of it, Aberdeen should fancy their chances of recruiting Adams but County are confident for a reason.  SPL, and in Owen Coyle’s case First Division, managers have been recruited by well-paying English clubs at levels the likes of Aberdeen cannot compete with.  County chairman, Roy McGregor, is likely to advise Adams to hold off for a more lucrative move south.

When Jimmy Calderwood left Dunfermline for Aberdeen in 2004 chairmen John Yorkston explained his surprise at Calderwood heading north, explaining that he believed one day Calderwood would move to Ibrox.  Aberdeen proved to be a plateau for Calderwood, as it has been for most over the last couple of decades.

If they don’t get Adams chances are they will go back to Motherwell; back-to-back second place finishes are exactly what is needed at Pittodrie right now.

Best of luck to Gordon Strachan on his first competitive game as Scotland manager tonight.

It is incorrect to brand a whole movement on the strength of a few individuals opinions and beliefs, no reputable historian claims that the movement was borne with anti irish catholic ethos, still to see evidence of Ernies claims

The Scots National League (SNL) were a body seeking Scottish independence in the early 1920s. They were formed in 1921 largely at the efforts of Ruairidh Erskine of Mar and William Gillies.

The SNL suffered due to it being primarily based in London and during its first few years often spent more time discussing the Irish situation than the Scottish. The group was accused of being anti-English.

The SNL was largely influenced by Sinn Féin and advocated the removal of elected Scottish nationalist MPs from the Westminster Parliament to set up an independent Scottish Parliament.

The SNL established the Scots Independent newspaper in 1926 to further their aims. In 1928 they helped form the National Party of Scotland (NPS) and merged themselves into that party.

By the time of the formation of the NPS the SNL had outgrown its London roots and become stronger in Scotland, largely due to the influence of Tom Gibson. Gibson had realised that nationalist politics needed to be connected to everyday issues in order to become popular. This strain of thought was prominent within the NPS and many SNL members drifted from it due to their belief that the NPS was too moderate. This included Ruairidh Erskine himself who drifted totally from politics.

Cathcart unionist association withdrew and blamed Westminster for indifference to the serious difficulties in Scotland the moderate right wing Scottish party was established which eventually joined the national party of Scotland to form the SNP in 1934 In 1935 general election the SNP failed to win any of the seven seats it contested They may have been able to argue that the blight of the great depression proved the bankruptcy of the Union as far as Scotland was concerned but the SNP had no alternative strategy of economic reconstruction to put forward in its place

More dramatic was the rise of militant protestant parties in Glasgow and Edinburgh in the early 1930’s a Scottish variant of the far right which chalked off any Scottish fascism because it regarded it as a catholic conspiracy.

The SNP remained a minority party until the 1960’s

    Excellent article.

I am particularly pleased that it featured Slovakia as a comparison given that I live there.

Slovakia is getting better and has come on leaps and bounds since 1993. The country was in a bit of a mess and it was very poor for a long time but it dragged itself up from a mess post-Communism and is one place where foreign investment is high especially from the Far east – Korean and Japanese investment here has been very good for some cities and their economies.

    Why wouldn’t foreign firms invest?

Slovakia doesn’t have the resources of Scotland and it is getting better here.

Scotland with its resources would be just fine in my opinion.

Dewar Gibb led the SNP for four years.

He was a QC and a Professor.

He wasn’t a peripheral, isolated figure in the SNP. He was their leader and foremost intellectual.

He regarded the Scots as a separate race.

He feared that the Scottish race was under threat from the influx of Irish Catholics into Scotland.

He regarded the Irish as inferior in every respect to the Scots.

It’s for you to explain him away, and to explain how someone with such views could lead the party if his views didn’t represent the views of the membership.

You might also want to explain away Billy Woolfe’s comments about the Catholic Church, the Pope’s visit and the Falklands war.

Or Salmond describing the people of NI as ‘blood of our blood, bone of our bone’. (civic nationalism???)

Or MacKaskill’s praise for the huns at Hampden. …….

”This was the showpiece final everyone wanted to see, and it was a great advert for Scottish football. Both teams were passionate, committed and it was end to end stuff from kick off to the final whistle. The players, management and fans contributed to a memorable occasion, and I urge that their positive example inside the ground is replicated outside it over the course of the evening and beyond.”

Or Graham’s comments about ‘evening up the score’.
