Managerial talent

Derek Adams propensity to waste time and then complain about time being added on should not obscure the fact that he is a remarkably productive football manager.  Ross County, from Dingwall, population 5,000, are sitting fourth in the SPL and remain in touching distance of a place in Europe.  No need to highlight their Scottish Cup campaign in 2010.

It is, therefore, no surprise that Aberdeen have asked Ross County for permission to speak to him.  On the face of it, Aberdeen should fancy their chances of recruiting Adams but County are confident for a reason.  SPL, and in Owen Coyle’s case First Division, managers have been recruited by well-paying English clubs at levels the likes of Aberdeen cannot compete with.  County chairman, Roy McGregor, is likely to advise Adams to hold off for a more lucrative move south.

When Jimmy Calderwood left Dunfermline for Aberdeen in 2004 chairmen John Yorkston explained his surprise at Calderwood heading north, explaining that he believed one day Calderwood would move to Ibrox.  Aberdeen proved to be a plateau for Calderwood, as it has been for most over the last couple of decades.

If they don’t get Adams chances are they will go back to Motherwell; back-to-back second place finishes are exactly what is needed at Pittodrie right now.

Best of luck to Gordon Strachan on his first competitive game as Scotland manager tonight.

Meant to say off oot. Now back in. Glad to hear Frixos is still about, he was a nice guy, I must try the Athena when I’m next back in Glasgow. I’ve not been in the Country Club for years, usually drink in Heraghty’s, the Bon Accord or Babbity’s when I come back.

I’m still stuck in Glasgow airport…who’d have thought getting to Dublin was so difficult…

During a discussion on Radio 5 this morning, on the transfer of an adapted Olympic Stadium to West Ham, a caller from Aberdeen used the “its our oil” argument against the public subsidies being piled up in favour of a English Premier League club. I have never bought the oil argument (it’s Yorkshire’s coal) but the caller did have a point. West Ham, a club that has arranged to borrow all of next seasons TV money, if necessary, is being subsidised, by Newham Council, the London Assembly, the Olympic Legacy company and the taxpayer in general, to the tune of £150-200 million depending on the restructure of the stadium, which itself cost £600 million. I made the point a couple of weeks back that with some support from the gas and oil sector, a new stadium and a young up and coming manager Aberdeen could quite possibly challenge Celtic in the next 2-3 years. Will they get even a fraction of what has been gifted to the Hammers, no, will West Ham’s new owners sell the club on once the stadium is adapted to football, certainly, and will the British taxpayer be once again out of pocket, you better believe it.

I hope you saw my post on the last thread? Cunningham was an SNP cabinet minister.

Which makes your “there’s never been a Catholic in the SNP cabinet” completely wrong. Accusations of that gravity have to be addressed.’

    No I didn’t.

When was Cunningham a cabinet secretary?

Green Peperami, Eggs Benedict and anyone with a variation on the name Francis – these bans from Ibrox are becoming ridiculous.

Do you think they’ll ban Bacon as well?

Can’t rule anything out with the ole Zombies…

  11. Every so often it kind of goes to the back of your mind about Sevco away in the third division. Then you get something that just reminds you and rubs it in even more.

So all this season that has been the Champions League and all the theatre that goes with it and no sign of them.

But in this international weekend, where all the big teams are not playing, I just noticed a tweet listing the injuries that Sevco had for their game this weekend!!

    Hee hee

As I said, all the big domestic games are cancelled for international duties……

  12. Auldheid – Ha, I thought you meant the nouveau ODA, Olympic Delivery Authority.

    You’re so last century ;)

  13. SOAL,

I wish!! Might have made the day more interesting!!

Been told we will depart at 6 – 21 hrs late…

Good luck to wee Gordon tonight.

  14. Dunfermline liquidated!! Wait for the clamour from MSM to have Sevco replace them in Div 1. Scottish football will not survive if this does not happen don’t ya know.

Perhaps Chas G can buy Dunfermline’s history and help them out a wee bit

Surely after choosing the History of Celtic FC as his specialist topic in the last round, he isn’t going to follow that up by answering questions of the history, (and it is history) of RFC 1873-2012! Surely I’ve goat that wan wrang!

  16. Good to see top Croatia and Serbia officials meeting before the game giving good examples to the supporters. Looks like sport atmosphere at the game and signs of reconciliation between two nations. Football can be great.

  17. If true feel sorry for Dunfermline fans, I know there are some out there who remember 03 season. I have a memory of the pars fans holding aloft a banner at Celtic park congratulating us on winning the league, can’t think of any other supporters doing that. Have had great times thru at east end park over the years. My heart goes out to Jim Leishman a club legend and gentleman.

  18. WDH – I’ll be in touch; i still owe you a slap up feast at the gaff of your choice. Looking forward to seeing you again amigo.

    Bill McMurdo’s Blog today:

So the date has been set for the Alex Salmond power grab.

If things go well, the date of the referendum – 18th September 2014 – will usher in the end of wee Eck’s inglorious career. And we can all go back to being united again as British peoples in one nation and kingdom. Every Unionist must devote his or herself to stamping out this awful blight in the midst –the very notion of separation.

God Save The Queen and Rule, Britannia!

If ever there was a reminder of why we should vote SNP it’s this extract from McMurdo’s Blog. He is the ‘Diet Leggo’ of the Sevco bloggers.

Rangers confirm they will host Linfield in a friendly on April 10. Rangers were regular visitors to Windsor Park in recent years and the Northern Irish champions hosted a fund-raising fixture for the administration-hit club last year.

Manager Ally McCoist says: “Linfield offered the hand of friendship to Rangers last May and we are delighted to thank them for their support by announcing this game at Ibrox.

“The club has a strong following from Northern Ireland and our supporters turned out in huge numbers to back us at Windsor Park last year in a match that really helped us out in difficult times.”
