Marching Newco into the Sea one insolvency at a time

835

‘Starve your club of money until I get what I want’ is just about the measure of Glib and Shameless’ statement yesterday.  No one at the SFA, SPFL, the Glasgow City Council, the Co-op/Vatican Bank or Celtic could do as much damage to the Fledgling Rangers as Dave King’s pronouncement.

These people have taken so many wrong turns in this episode it is like they are being operated by a compulsive Karmic puppeteer.  There is a time for withholding ticket sales, Celtic fans did it 20 years ago next month, but Celtic fans had a plan, grassroots support, investors on hand, unencumbered by Fit and Proper concerns, or the law against directors of a liquidated business working in a company using the same or similar name.

Most importantly the Celtic ‘old board’ included some, like Kevin Kelly, who was committed to change, while even the hold-outs were died-in-the-wool Celtic men, if clearly misguided.  None of the decision makers would ever consider razing the stadium.

Fledgling Rangers are at the mercy of hedge funds, some spivs and a couple of ‘Rangers’ men, who must be increasingly frustrated at the attempts of others to usurp what they legitimately bought and paid for.

Before stepping off the ledge – and make no mistake, stopping fans from buying season tickets is the only way to kill not just a club, but any successor clubs – you need to be sure you are in a position to cut a deal, and that you have the cash to make it all possible.  If you don’t have a watertight plan, you are working towards the end of your football club and its dilapidated remains.

I would be utterly amazed if the Easdales or Laxey Partners submit to this Glib and Shameless series of demands.  If they do, I have seriously misread them.

King was on the oldco board when they walked slowly to the gallows, all for the want of the kind of money he now says is needed to make Newco competitive with Celtic.  His chance to bang the populist drum and raise some cash was in the years before the club, stadium, stock and bike were sold for a combined total of £1.

It makes you wonder if there is a plan to march the entire club, and all its symbolism, into the sea, before picking up the driftwood after another liquidation.  For a fan of the club that would be horrendous, but think of the rich pickings available to whoever can grab the assets.

This is high stakes poker, but those forcing the issue don’t have any skin in the game.  Even if the whole thing is washed away in the storms, they will avoid most of the blame.

Delighted to read Fergus McCann on the club site this morning:

“I am very proud when I see Celtic’s progress, its status in Scotland, and its worldwide reputation. Especially when I see the great work of Celtic FC Foundation carrying on the legacy of Brother Walfrid.”

Despite the perspective that the events of 2012 gave us I still meet people who just don’t get what he did for Celtic.  No football fan is under any obligation to worry about their club’s finances but the man at the top is, and when our top man wore a bunnet, our transformation was outstanding.

There is a little over two weeks to go before the CQteN St Patrick’s Night Dinner on Friday, 14 March, at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  The beneficiary of  the night will be Kholoni Primary School, Malawi, where we will fund Mary’s Meals to build a kitchen for 1200 kids who currently don’t have meal facilities.

We have received some incredible assistance already (more on what happened in Germany and Belgium when I get the next stage of the development ready), but you can get involved by ordering a personalised beanie hat, with your name on one side and CQN on the other.

Hats cost £15 each and if you order before 7 March you can collect yours at the CQteN Dinner.  If you’re not attending the dinner (and why not?) the £15 will cover postage and packaging.  If you ordered a Virtual Ticket, you’re personalised hat is part of your package.  All profits go to the school kitchen.

Take a look at the front and back of the hats.  To order, email hatfrompat@celticquicknews.co.uk with name, whether you are attending CQteN and address if not, and I’ll get your message to Pat.

Thanks for responding, and I want to make it clear that my post is no way instended as a criticism of anyone on here. It is a genuine question posed in good faith.

Yes, all of the things you mention could and should have come to pass, but they didn’t, for whatever reason. But even if Newco had been stripped of titles and people sent to jail, that still wouldn’t have invalidated the club’s right to progress to the top tier of Scottish Football. I would have to agree that they have got off lightly, but still, where was it written that they were not entitled to promotion year-on-year?

And if they do gain promotion to the Premiership, why are some supporters intent on punishing Celtic FC for that?

I suspect that a lot of ghuys and ghirls would feel that CFC didn’t do enough to ensure ‘justice’ with thems and look at Dermot Desmond’s words and think thet Celtic really wan’t to refire the rivalry and awful Old Firm tag. For many, that is the perception and is unacceptable.

Gretna Football Club was a Scottish football club that represented the town of Gretna, Dumfries and Galloway, close to the border between England and Scotland. Founded in 1946, the club had rapid and continual success in the mid-2000s, and reached the Scottish Cup Final in 2006, but the club fell into severe financial difficulties when businessman Brooks Mileson, its main financial backer, withdrew funds due to ill health. The club was forced to dissolve in 2008.

Despite being based in Scotland, the club participated in amateur and semi-professional leagues in English football from 1947 until they were elected to the Scottish Football League at the third attempt in 2002. Relying heavily on substantial financial support from Mileson, the club were promoted through the Scottish leagues from the Third Division to the Scottish Premier League in less than five years. The club also reached the 2006 Scottish Cup Final, losing in a penalty shootout to Hearts.

The team struggled badly in the SPL and the club were placed in administration after Mileson withdrew his support due to illness.[2] At the end of the season, all of the club’s staff were made redundant and the club were initially relegated to the Third Division due to their inability to guarantee fulfilment of their forthcoming fixtures. After this demotion, the one remaining offer to buy the club was withdrawn.[3] The club resigned their place in the Scottish Football League on 3 June[4] and were formally liquidated on 8 August.[5]

The club’s supporters’ trust then decided to establish a new club, Gretna 2008, who were accepted into the East of Scotland Football League on 11 July 2008. Whilst sharing the same fanbase and a similar name, the new club has no legal connection with the original Gretna F.C.[6]

Is this about to happen to another club

  4. The announcement that Steven MacLean will referee the league cup final is another sign of what we are up against in this country.

Every time without fail he has angered the Celtic support with his baffling decisions against Celtic. Only last week he failed to award a penalty for Stokes against St Johnstone and between him and his linesman stopped LG celebrating his first goal at Celtic Park.

Prior to that he refused Celtic 2 penaltys at Fir Park. The second positioned 5 yards away contrived to book Pukki for the most stonewall penalty.

His reward for blatant errors is a cup final.

This problem must be tackled now by my club because it is seriously making me consider if its worth funding a corrupt game.

ON Tuesday Hoops fans will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fergus McCann’s takeover. Record Sport tells the story of The Bunnet Who Done It in an exclusive three-day series.

SNSMcCann unveiling the league flag after probably the most important title in Celtic’s history in 1998 after they stopped Rangers winning 10-in-a-row

FERGUS McCann was so astute with Celtic’s money he’d have been a good commissioner for Scottish football to cure the game’s financial ills.

That’s David Low’s belief and he was the man closest to McCann from the moment he helped convince him to ride to Celtic’s rescue in the club’s darkest hour.

Now 20 years on, Low believes McCann’s fiercest critics have been given cause for sober reflection on how the wee man approached the job of running a football club.

McCann had issues with every manager he worked with at Celtic Park.

And it was McCann who christened Paolo di Canio, Pierre van Hooijdonk and Jorge Cadete the

Three Amigos when they went into disputes with an immovable owner.

The Celtic fans were consequently in uproar during various stages of McCann’s time in charge but Low, McCann’s financial adviser, senses a revision of history taking place.

Low said: “My opinion of him hasn’t changed one bit in 20 years. I got him then and I get him now.

“It’s for others to admit they didn’t fully understand the pain that had to be gone through and tough decisions Fergus had to make on Celtic’s behalf. He was operating in a period when Rangers were dominant on the park and their chairman David Murray was talking about putting down a tenner for every fiver Celtic spent.

“But the difficulties Rangers are living through now have been a catalyst for Celtic supporters to change their minds over how Fergus went about his business.

“What he did when he took over in 1994 could have been considered an act of reckless folly.

“He took Celtic on without a chance to properly study the club’s accounts. He went in blind and effectively made himself the largest unsecured creditor in an insolvent company.

“And yet when he left some people still criticised the amount of money he made. But he was the man who took the club’s share price to an unknown high, at which point some Celtic supporters cashed theirs in and made a tidy profit.

“But by the time Fergus left Scotland he sold at a lesser share price.”

The quirk of fate that brought McCann into Celtic’s history also took him into conflict with the game’s accepted practices of managerial relationships and the contractual negotiations with players.

Low said: “The Taylor Report that demanded all-seater stadia for safety reasons in the wake of tragedy left Celtic no choice but to rebuild the ground.

“The disproportionate sums of money Celtic had to take from their annual budget for that meant there was less available for bringing in new players.

“Rangers were going crazy on the transfer market and Celtic had to bed in for a difficult five years.”

A myth grew that McCann was so absorbed in business matters he’d no time for other considerations such as the possibility of Celtic’s greatest rivals winning 10 championships in a row.

But Low said: “Fergus was as nervous as any other Celtic fan over the prospect of Rangers getting 10 in a row.

“Yet he also had this burden of responsibility when it came to running the club. And he wouldn’t put Celtic’s future at risk for the sake of one event.

“What if Celtic had spent £5million to stop Rangers and they responded by laying out £10m?

“Fergus wasn’t for going down that road but he was as delighted as the fans when Wim Jansen’s side stopped Rangers getting 10 successive titles.”

McCann knew he’d a finite sum of money to spend. And that brought him into public conflict with his managers and prominent players.

Low said: “There had been a culture where managers were the frontmen and not overly concerned by looking after the books. They always needed a couple of players.

“Fergus changed that. Celtic supporters all agreed di Canio, van Hooijdonk and Cadete were excellent players for instance.

“But all three shared one thought – to use Celtic to gain a foothold in British football and then move elsewhere.

“They’d decent contracts which they happily signed and then, in my opinion, manufactured difficulties on the back of what they claimed were broken promises.

“Paolo referred to a ‘leetle problem’ and it led to Fergus famously saying he would get ‘not one thin dime’.

“So Fergus moved Paolo on and Pierre went with him. Celtic made good money on both deals.

“Fergus would’ve made a good commissioner for Scottish football. He

instinctively knew right from wrong where deals were concerned.

“It included his objection to Glasgow having three grounds such as Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden. He thought Hampden could’ve been sold and the money reinvested in the game.”

But Low isn’t convinced McCann would’ve had an opinion on Scottish football at all if he’d been asked in 2014 rather than 1994.

Low added: “I’m not sure he’d have got involved with Celtic or any club in the current financial climate.

“But Celtic fans should always see his involvement with their club as the stars aligning in their favour.”

  7. Lennon a general with no-one left to fight.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has another 11 games before the league campaign grinds to a halt

    RODDY FORSYTH – PUBLISHED 28 FEBRUARY 2014 02:30 AM

This particular hare has been running for three years but Neil Lennon set it firmly on course when he mused upon his prospects and said: “How many titles can you win? Is it six, seven, eight, nine, 10?”

The notion that Celtic can take their sequence of championships into double figures became a live issue as soon as Rangers were cast down into the fourth circle of liquidation hell, then known as the Third Division of the former Scottish Football League. Last season, when Lennon’s players beat St Johnstone to win their second successive title under him, the Parkhead faithful chanted their desire for 10 in a row.

At the time, Lennon played down the idea. “Rangers will be back eventually and will provide strong opposition in the next few years, I would imagine,” he said. However, as Celtic count the fixtures until they formally annex their third successive flag the manager has plainly revisited the notion and not, it seems, as a hypothetical premise.

Of course, when he made the comment a week ago, there were still challenges such as Fraser Forster’s attempt to surpass the UK clean-sheet record, plus Celtic’s unbeaten run of league games.

On Tuesday night, Jonny Hayes put an end to the first and Adam Rooney took care of the second. It now remains for Celtic to plod on through 11 fixtures until their campaign grinds to a close in May and, no matter how it is dressed up, the procedure will be infected by tedium. This is the dreary landscape forecast when it became evident that Rangers would have to climb, division by division, from the foot of the heap.

The prospect profoundly alarmed Scotland’s football administrators but, even then, the assumption was that Rangers would be back in the top flight for the start of the 2015-16 season and that broadcast revenues would return to former levels with the restoration of the Old Firm derbies. Yet, in a demonstration of perversity remarkable even by recent standards at Ibrox, the Rangers directors have rendered that vision questionable.

Graham Wallace, the latest chief executive, had generally impressed – or at the very least been given the benefit of the doubt – by the supporters’ groups.

This was the man, after all, who staked his reputation on putting Rangers right in transparent fashion and who was re-elected at the AGM with 85.5pc in his favour, the highest of any board member.

  9. Celtic appeal against Van Dijk dismissal

    Staff Writer

    Friday 28 February 2014

CELTIC have launched an appeal against the red card that was shown to defender Virgil van Dijk during Tuesday’s defeat to Aberdeen.

The Parkhead side submitted the relevant paperwork for a claim of wrongful dismissal yesterday and the case will be heard by the Scottish Football Association’s disciplinary tribunal next Thursday.

That means the Dutch centre-half, who is facing a one-game ban, will be available for tomorrow’s visit of Inverness. Should the appeal be dismissed, the 22-year-old will instead sit out the match against Kilmarnock on Friday, March 14.

  10. Portuguese daily newspaper A Bola understands that Celtic are keeping close tabs on Vitoria Setubal attacker Ricardo Horta.

The Bhoys had the player watched in weekend’s match against Pacos Ferreira, which is enough to suggest they are seriously thinking about luring the winger to Glasgow.

According to A bola, the likes of Genoa and Hannover are also believed to be showing interest in the 19-year-old footballer.

Ricardo Horta came through the youth ranks at Benfica, but left the club for Vitoria Setubal before he could make a senior debut.

After making six substitute appearances in the league last term, the winger has nailed down a regular starting berth at Estadio do Bonfim this season.

Horta went on to make 18 league appearances for Vitoria Setubal and managed to score 2 goals in the process.

The youngster is predicted a bright future in the game and it appears it won’t be long before he leaves his current employers for a bigger club.

  13. This proposal of Dodgy Dave about putting the season ticket money into a ” holding fund” and only paying per game. How will that work then? So, I’m a fan ( I’m not, honest) and I send my 350 bucks to Dave’s dodgy deals company, and I then want to go to see the 1st game. This is gonna sound daft I guess when you all come back and tell me the answer, but, how do I get into the game? I’m serious. How does it work? Anyone?

  14. And my next question ( maybe I should have stuck in more at school):

Assuming Dodgy Dave persuades the hordes to do as he suggests, in turn starving the club of the SB money, what happens in Sept when the Wonga boys want their loan repaid? I believe it was secured against 2 of deadco’s remaining assets, or, shares?

If the can’t pay them back, are they not, by default, giving the very people they want out even greater control since they will then need to turn over the assets because they can’t repay the loan?
