Marching Newco into the Sea one insolvency at a time

835

‘Starve your club of money until I get what I want’ is just about the measure of Glib and Shameless’ statement yesterday.  No one at the SFA, SPFL, the Glasgow City Council, the Co-op/Vatican Bank or Celtic could do as much damage to the Fledgling Rangers as Dave King’s pronouncement.

These people have taken so many wrong turns in this episode it is like they are being operated by a compulsive Karmic puppeteer.  There is a time for withholding ticket sales, Celtic fans did it 20 years ago next month, but Celtic fans had a plan, grassroots support, investors on hand, unencumbered by Fit and Proper concerns, or the law against directors of a liquidated business working in a company using the same or similar name.

Most importantly the Celtic ‘old board’ included some, like Kevin Kelly, who was committed to change, while even the hold-outs were died-in-the-wool Celtic men, if clearly misguided.  None of the decision makers would ever consider razing the stadium.

Fledgling Rangers are at the mercy of hedge funds, some spivs and a couple of ‘Rangers’ men, who must be increasingly frustrated at the attempts of others to usurp what they legitimately bought and paid for.

Before stepping off the ledge – and make no mistake, stopping fans from buying season tickets is the only way to kill not just a club, but any successor clubs – you need to be sure you are in a position to cut a deal, and that you have the cash to make it all possible.  If you don’t have a watertight plan, you are working towards the end of your football club and its dilapidated remains.

I would be utterly amazed if the Easdales or Laxey Partners submit to this Glib and Shameless series of demands.  If they do, I have seriously misread them.

King was on the oldco board when they walked slowly to the gallows, all for the want of the kind of money he now says is needed to make Newco competitive with Celtic.  His chance to bang the populist drum and raise some cash was in the years before the club, stadium, stock and bike were sold for a combined total of £1.

It makes you wonder if there is a plan to march the entire club, and all its symbolism, into the sea, before picking up the driftwood after another liquidation.  For a fan of the club that would be horrendous, but think of the rich pickings available to whoever can grab the assets.

This is high stakes poker, but those forcing the issue don’t have any skin in the game.  Even if the whole thing is washed away in the storms, they will avoid most of the blame.

Delighted to read Fergus McCann on the club site this morning:

“I am very proud when I see Celtic’s progress, its status in Scotland, and its worldwide reputation. Especially when I see the great work of Celtic FC Foundation carrying on the legacy of Brother Walfrid.”

Despite the perspective that the events of 2012 gave us I still meet people who just don’t get what he did for Celtic.  No football fan is under any obligation to worry about their club’s finances but the man at the top is, and when our top man wore a bunnet, our transformation was outstanding.

There is a little over two weeks to go before the CQteN St Patrick’s Night Dinner on Friday, 14 March, at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  The beneficiary of  the night will be Kholoni Primary School, Malawi, where we will fund Mary’s Meals to build a kitchen for 1200 kids who currently don’t have meal facilities.

We have received some incredible assistance already (more on what happened in Germany and Belgium when I get the next stage of the development ready), but you can get involved by ordering a personalised beanie hat, with your name on one side and CQN on the other.

Hats cost £15 each and if you order before 7 March you can collect yours at the CQteN Dinner.  If you’re not attending the dinner (and why not?) the £15 will cover postage and packaging.  If you ordered a Virtual Ticket, you’re personalised hat is part of your package.  All profits go to the school kitchen.

Take a look at the front and back of the hats.  To order, email hatfrompat@celticquicknews.co.uk with name, whether you are attending CQteN and address if not, and I’ll get your message to Pat.

from memory was the allegation at the time not that he invested £20M and received £15M back. Net cost £5M.

If he paid himself a bonus in SA he would have paid 50% tax and only kept £10M. therefore, honest Dave washed an additional £5m for him. Just allegations mind.

  3. Good, thought provoking article but can’t agree with this bit:

“It makes you wonder if there is a plan to march the entire club, and all its symbolism, into the sea, before picking up the driftwood after another liquidation.”

Even if it does end up with another liquidation and another one (is the first one complete yet? BDO done?) the People would never admit to all that the old Rangers symbolised.

They would still cling to the Struthian myths of dignity and Britishness and blame their misfortunes on the unseen Fenian hand.

  4. Oscar positive,

Them wee pc’s are sexy but a right pain in the breasts when you are working on them.

I assembled a pc the other week and talked myself into using a ssd….sensational.

  5. So, imagine you follow a sporting club, which has recently enjoyed considerable success.

But then you discover that this recent success was purchased by the players and officials taking part in some very dodgy business deals,

tax evasion and the clubs very hush-hush banking arrangements.

Then the bank decides to terminate the hush-hush deals.

The owner of your sporting club is forced to abdicate, selling the club to another dodgy business man, a patsy, for a trifle.

This new business man, after using further tax avoidance schemes to make a go of the business tries a very desperate move

by attempting to pheonix the club – via a controlled Administration, with a view to ejecting the debt (unpaid) and starting off again debt free.

This move fails after the tax office throws a spanner in the works.

This business man, a billionaire no less, then uncovers a business partner, who does the dirty on him and takes over control of the newly formed club.

Millions more is flushed away as the club attempts to rise to the lofty heights of its predecessor.

But, despite a procession of would-be saviours, the new club is now facing the same fate as it’s predecessor.

You, as a long standing, true-blue, loyal supporter are desperate for a real saviour to ride over the horizon, much the same as happened to your greatest rivals.

At this juncture, one man, only one man in the entire world comes out of undergrowth to garner your support for his takeover plans.

No concrete plans in place. No evidence of how this rescue package is funded etc… Just take him at his word.

Surely, having gone through years of trauma with shady ‘business men’ you would think your would-be saviour must be of impeccable character and utterly trustworthy.

Yet, in this world, awash with millionaires and billionaires, Dave ( the man who would be ) King is the ONLY man who can save the day.

A man described by a judge in South Africa as a “glib and shameless liar” as he convicted him for tax evasion, is the epitome of whom you must avoid at all cost.

Clearly, the club is in such a state of disarray and crippling debt that no honest broker will touch them.

Dodgy dealers are the only ones prepared to even look with passing interest.

Sadly, the latest grab for cash deal by the encumbent owners will now have scared off even the dodgiest dealers in town.

Death can sometimes be a blessing you know….

A combined group of Rangers supporters’ organisations have backed Dave King’s call for fans to ring-fence season ticket money until the club’s board have given assurances over finances.

The Union of Fans, comprised of The Rangers Supporters Assembly, the Rangers Supporters Trust and the Rangers Supporters Association, want the former Ibrox director to establish a trust to which fans could pay into, as opposed to giving money directly to the club.

King, who is not a shareholder in the company, has been called upon to lobby shareholders and attempt to “take control of the board”.

The group has also declared it has “no confidence” in the current board, questioning their decision this week to take out a £1.5m loan from shareholders, two-thirds of which is secured against club property.

Laxey Partners, the biggest shareholder in the company, will receive £150,000 for its loan, which will be payable in either cash or shares.

The Union of Fans says it is aware of other shareholders who were willing to loan money on better terms and has accused the board of “lining the pocket of shareholders”.

“We have no confidence in the current board and would ask Dave King, following his statement yesterday, to set up a trust where fans can place our season ticket money to be released to the club on agreed terms,” a statement from the group read.

“We would also ask him to lobby all non-aligned shareholders and form a new Shareholders Group to challenge the anonymous shareholders behind Blue Pitch Holdings and Margarita, then take control of the board.

“Events over the past few days have left us deeply concerned, once again, about the direction our club is being taken in.

“We have waited patiently, as requested by Graham Wallace, to see progress as part of his 120-day review, but feel that the latest decision from the board, to line the pockets of shareholders who showed a total disregard for the wishes of fans at the recent AGM, is yet another kick in the teeth.

“We ask all our fellow supporters across the world to join us, with Dave King, in an effort to return our club to the people whose only interest in making a profit is to reinvest it in our club.”

On Wednesday, King called on fans to place their season ticket money for the 2014/15 season into a trust, with Rangers then only receiving the proceeds if conditions were met.

    via STV

The South African-based businessman said the board should provide “legally binding assurances” the club has enough money to see out next season, promise season ticket money wouldn’t be used to settle historic debts, assure fans club properties aren’t used to secure finance and explain why they had previously stated they would not require additional finance in this financial year.

In response, a spokesman for Rangers said that: “The board notes Mr King’s comments with concern as they are potentially de-stabilising and damaging to Rangers Football Club.”

Supporters have been encouraged to state whether they favour the idea of withholding money via a trust on the Union of Fans website.

Bada Bing, I agree with you, but the cheating went on before Fergus and is still going on now.

Anything we’ve achieved has been despite the cheating. Fergus did a wonderful job of exposing Jim Farry but move on to today and we now have Campbell Ogilvie in charge. Better or worse?

  11. Does not matter how many times they are re-incarnated, the fact is, as long as there is an Ibrox Stadium there will be a team playing there and the same supporters going there. All that needs to happen is that whoever wants to run a football club from Edminston Drive has to pay 1 penny more than a construction company, or whoever, for the assets, everything else will be done to help those who have Ibrox to compete in Scottish Football por cierto.

Sorry to butt in, but if it’s 7 years old it probably won’t support WIndows 7 or 8 very well (if at all) unless it was particularly high end at the time.

If you’re happy with an OS other than Windows you could probably extend it’s life by running one of the lightweight Ubuntu versions. I run Mint OS on an old Dell and it’s great.

  16. Praecepta,

Hmmm. I’d say write it off. Prices are quite cheap compared to what they used to be.

A new operating system alone is gonna cost between £60 &£100. If it was 2ish years I’d say upgrade. Ram and ssd would make huge difference.

Shop about. There’ll be a cheeky wee deal that’ll suit your budget.
