Maribor fatigue levels

1176

While Maribor were clearly second best at home to Celtic last week they remain a potent threat to our season.  You can be sure they’ve watched every minute of every game Celtic have played this season and will have dissected each defensive lapse.  Our acknowledged weaknesses – primarily a defence which has yet to find cohesion – will be well-known to each of them.

The vast acreage of Celtic Park should suit the mobile, pressing, game Ronny Deila has brought to our play.  It will be difficult for Maribor to cover all defensive zones, so with Celtic certain to play without a target-man, I expect the visitors to concede territory on the wings, defend their penalty area and force Celtic to play through them.

We will inevitably leave space at the back, in particular down the wings.  How attentive we deal with this risk could determine the outcome of the tie.

Maribor’s schedule since facing Celtic on Wednesday suggests their biggest challenge will be to maintain energy levels late in the game.  Thursday will have been a rest day, only light training would have taken place Friday and the bulk of the first team had a league game on Saturday evening.  Yesterday would be another rest day, and they will travel today before a light job on Celtic Park this evening.

By contrast, the bulk of those who will start for Celtic tomorrow will have had normal preparatory training Friday, Saturday, Sunday, with some light work tomorrow.  Those who made substitute appearances on Saturday will not have made a significant debit on energy levels.

We need to keep the ball moving early on, curtail rest times and have Maribor accessing their reserve tanks as early as possible.

  1. Good news to all the CQN’rs out there who were fans of Breaking Bad. Season 6 starts filming in January.

  2. Bawsman/Paul, I see Bawsman’s point but looks like RD is placing all his eggs in the one basket for CL push. League will take care of itself.

Aberdeen resting players on the other hand, was very funny.

We have a BIG squad and rotation will happen throughout the season especially around European games.

Also gives the manager a chance to see what options he has and if he can trust players to carry out his instructions. Early days yet.

    Good morning Paul.

Why do they allow tennis players to play sometimes 3-4-5 hour matches in successive days then?

If you are fit enough you can recover a lot quicker.

Roberto Induran’s powers of recovery are legend, mainly due to outstanding CORE fitness.

The more football I played, the fitter I got, the more football I wanted/could play.

    —————————–

Yeah Paul! I mean, oranges have more vitamin c than apples, so I don’t see why apples can’t just get more vitamin c!

    Lord above.

  4. Sorry Paul, got the cyclists name wrong (Miguel Indurain) old age does not come alone :-)

Physical attributes[edit]Indurain had a physiology superior to fellow athletes, according to the Ferrara institute. His blood took seven litres of oxygen around his body per minute,[26] compared to 3–4 litres for an ordinary person and 5–6 litres for fellow riders. His cardiac output is 50 litres a minute; a fit amateur cyclist’s is about 25 litres. Indurain’s lung capacity was 7.8 litres,[2] compared to an average of 6 litres. His resting pulse was as low as 28 BPM,[2] compared to an average 60–72 bpm, which meant his heart would be less strained in the tough mountain stages.[15] His VO2 max was 88 ml/kg/min; in comparison, Lance Armstrong’s was 83.8 ml/kg/min and Greg LeMond’s was more than 92 ml/kg/min.[27]

He consulted the Italian professor, Francesco Conconi (famous for pioneering EPO use in sport), from 1987 and his weight dropped from 85 to 78 kg under his guidance,[6][7] “changing himself into an all-round rider”, said Philippe Brunel in L’Équipe.[2] He was 10 kg lighter than when he was a junior.[28]

Er, season 6 was the final season, as far as I’m aware, and I’ve just finished watching it on DVD.

I’ve heard there’s to be a spin-off involving Saul, the lawyer.

Is that maybe what you’ve heard about?

  7. Bawsman has a point.

RD has been complaining about us having to play 3 qualifiers so early in our season and wants us to look at summer football to give our clubs a better chance.

So why keep an entire team out of a league match? Contradictory is it not?

Maribor are/will be more match fit, therefore, better prepared for tomorrow.

We mada a mistake not playing our 1st team on Saturday.

Tell Mrs tallybhoy not to listen to political bite size clap trap.

Advise here to get along to a couple of meetings if she can from each of the opposing views. Listen to the people on the ground. There are a few meeings\debates all around the country were the opposing parties debate their views. Proper debate. Not the mince that is going to be broadcast live tonight.

Then she will be able to make a reasoned informed view for her goodself either way.

MWD is still saying AYE though and if she wants to take my lead that’s fine and dandy too.

  10. Must admit. I kinda agree with Bawsman to a degree.

their is fitness and match fitness.

We mump and moan, and that includes Paul67, about entering the CL qualifiers too early as our league campaign has not began and therefor view our team as not being match fit while our opponents generally have kicked off and are a few weeks ahead of us in preperation. then when it suits the arguement the opposite is argued.

    So I don’t buy it.

Players weren’t rotated to save on energy levels, in my view. They were rotated to save an injury to one of our (nearly used the word stars there) players.

And for me that was acceptable albeit if I had travelled to Inverness, spent my hard redies, to give my support I would have been disappointed in the team selction.

    MWD says AYE

  11. Maribor are the only full time team in their league i believe, they play part timers every week.I think Commons should start and give us a more attacking threat than last week.

Glycerol levels don’t measure mental attitude or the cohesiveness of a defence and it’s midfield.

That would have been more valuable than resting players three games into a league campaign.

It’s been done and my chat’s even boring myself now so that’s the last I’ll say on saturdays approach and now looking forward to tomorrow night when I hope we get a cohesive, professional performance.

  20. Paul 67 / All

Worth remembering that a boring , drab, 0:0 gets us through.

Maribor need to score, we don’t, and if we want to compete at this level, we need to recall that teams like Milan, Juve, would be contented to defend their position at home, with or without a possibility of scoring on the break.

Whilst I would love us to go out and play flowing football, tomorrow the result is more important than quality of football

I think we will win but I absolutely believe we have made it harder for ourselves.

    Artmedia???

    Karagandy??

We were unfit and underprepared for them, I’m clever enough to look at history and realise we made mistakes, it’s only the stupid who ignore history, then repeat it.

  25. Jungle Jim, it’s surprising what you learn when you ask a few questions.

Bawsman, there is no suggestion that tennis players glycerol levels return to 100% for the next day after a 5 hour match. In fact, when this happens, we invariably hear about tiredness/lack of rest.

“If you are fit enough you recover quicker”, not in dispute, but it still takes more than 4 days to recover glycerol to 100%. This is the way our bodies metabolise.

None of this means you cannot play/endure exercise in consecutive days, but you do so within the limits of how the human body works.

If you know of a way to reduce this timeframe, go sell it, you’ll be a sport millionaire this time next year. Go read some background on the subject before you patent the idea, though.

Your information on Indurain is interesting, but this is about his capacity, not recovery, which is the subject under discussion.

  26. I remember a 0-0 boring draw many years ago in an away game in Europe, won us the cup wi the big handles, another on like that will do me fine thank you very much ;)
