Maribor fatigue levels

1176

While Maribor were clearly second best at home to Celtic last week they remain a potent threat to our season.  You can be sure they’ve watched every minute of every game Celtic have played this season and will have dissected each defensive lapse.  Our acknowledged weaknesses – primarily a defence which has yet to find cohesion – will be well-known to each of them.

The vast acreage of Celtic Park should suit the mobile, pressing, game Ronny Deila has brought to our play.  It will be difficult for Maribor to cover all defensive zones, so with Celtic certain to play without a target-man, I expect the visitors to concede territory on the wings, defend their penalty area and force Celtic to play through them.

We will inevitably leave space at the back, in particular down the wings.  How attentive we deal with this risk could determine the outcome of the tie.

Maribor’s schedule since facing Celtic on Wednesday suggests their biggest challenge will be to maintain energy levels late in the game.  Thursday will have been a rest day, only light training would have taken place Friday and the bulk of the first team had a league game on Saturday evening.  Yesterday would be another rest day, and they will travel today before a light job on Celtic Park this evening.

By contrast, the bulk of those who will start for Celtic tomorrow will have had normal preparatory training Friday, Saturday, Sunday, with some light work tomorrow.  Those who made substitute appearances on Saturday will not have made a significant debit on energy levels.

We need to keep the ball moving early on, curtail rest times and have Maribor accessing their reserve tanks as early as possible.

the only thing that we learn from history is that we never learn from history.

(nicked, but don’t know who from)

  2. Moonbeams, not me. In fact, I’ve said the exact opposite. I don’t know Celtic are complaining about, we are better prepared because of our three qualification round.

    Kdc, not in dispute.

Clashcitybhoy, indeed. Would not want to risk playing for 0-0, though.

None of this would have happened if the SPFL had re-scheduled the ICT game …. Hahahaha

  4. Hello all. I need some advice. I am going to the game tomorrow and have persuaded my wife to accompany me. So three questions:

    1. Can anyone suggest a nice restaurant in the city centre (we are flying from Antrim and should be in the city at 12 ish).

    2. Forgive the next question but where is a nice shopping area (sympathy please)?

    3. We are staying at the Ramada airport hotel as we fly at 7:00 am on Wednesday so what is the best plan after the game – is it possible to have a late meal and then go to the airport or is better to just go to the Ramada immediately?

    Paul67 …..

I would suggest that the players were actually knackered after coming off a summer break to high intensity games ….. the wee rest will do them the world of good, and will have allowed more concentrated preparation time …..

………… They proved the fitness levels were adequate in by the time we reached the stage of Maribour (away)

There is a lovely Italian restaurant in merchant city called Qua, and it’s right in the heart of the city surrounded by shops. And I would head back to the Ramada mate.

  9. We lost a goal to Maribor because we did not defend ‘as a unit’.

Maribor looked very dangerous on the counter attack, we need to learn to defend ‘as a unit’.

We missed a great chance on Saturday to increase our fitness levels and have 90 minutes invaluable practice defending ‘as a unit’ against a very good counter attacking side.

We are a better side than Maribor (I think we are also better than Legia btw) but we are behind the drag curve in preperation and would have been 90 minutes closer to 100% if we’d played the 1st team on Saturday IMHO.

KEEP THE PARTY (and your bums) CLEAN…. :)

  12. Warsaw game we went 1-2 down on the stroke of HT, we also lost Efe.

10 men ran into the ground for 30 mins when eventually fatigue led to 2 pens and two sloppily conceded goals.

  13. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

We’re doomed DOOOMED DOOOOOMED tomorrow !!!

Seriously get a reality check. We are lucky club who just got a massive slice of luck on the luckiest of lucky days, following Legia’s Hari-kari act.

Tomorrow we have a great chance of progressing, we are as it stands, through.

But the support can be a help or a hindrance; patience is required. No need to push forward at all. Maribor will want us to career forward. Forcing them out will deliver space for Celtic and upset their style.

CQN had a few posts about the Partizan Belgrade game in 1988, when we only had to sit on the lead……….we didn’t and suffered.

So stop building yerselfs into a lather.

Pressure or encouragement can be delivered from the stands tomorrow. Your choice.

Anyone know if it’s possible to watch the game whilst abroad, live on itv.com?

“Watch the game live here on ITV.com or on ITV4.”

Unless you have a VPN (which I use when travelling) or can access a proxy server it will block you outside of the UK.

I have no idea how to access a proxy server so if you need this service maybe Google can help.

Costs 5 quid a month VPN based in UK – ok for viewing BBC Iplayer etc. I use it quite a lot. Of course quality is dependant on the speed of your connection.

And there is always the oul dodgy stream if you don’t mind being bugged by constant pop up ads and dubious quality (a bit like the official Celtic stream)

Any one of these, I can recommend the Grill On the Corner & Ristorante La Fiorentina. If your in the city centre I would suggest Buchanan Galleries as it’s probably the nicest within the city centre. I’d head back to the Ramada in the evening as I’m not sure how late in the evening you want to have a meal.

have a look at this though, might give you some ideas.

  17. Bawsman,

For all I agree with you, it’s done now. Let’s focus on tomorrow.

Is our starting line-up as easy to predict as listing the boys who didn’t play on Sat with the captain added in?

I understood that article to be a p*ss take, hence all the ‘spoilers’ at the end of it. I’m a huge fan so a season 6 would be great. But I also think they ended it pretty well so wouldn’t be too disappointed if that was the end.

  19. Rrc / Soz

I wasn’t aware that season 5 was in 2 parts.

I’ve got a DVD with ‘the fifth season’ on the box, and then another DVD entitled ‘the Final Season’.

There is no mention of season 6, I just assumed that’s what it was.

However, I’m glad I watched the final episode of the final season before reading your post, RRC!!

  20. Soz

Thanks for that. It’s interesting news. I just hope they don’t spoil the whole thing. I like dramas to have a beginning, middle and end and not to be dragged on and on with ever more ridiculous storylines.

Breaking Bad was fantastic, as addictive as the crystal meth depicted. (so I’m told)

Thank you LHAD – I am just worried that the reviews on the Ramada say it’s food is poor and as I have managed against all odds to get my wife to go to a game (she was raging when I told her we were staying in airport hotel) I hoped we might have a nice supper.

    Thanks again HH

Thought the finale was excellent, too.

It’s unpredictability is one of the series’ great strengths.

  26. My birthday today reminds me of a bet I was going to make but didn’t and will always regret it.

On the day I was 50 we played Hearts at Celtic park. (25th August 2007)

I was going to put £50 on us winning 5-0

With Naka as 1st goal scorer (Number25) – It was also my Silver (25 years) Wedding Anniversary that year.

    I didn’t put it on, Naka scored 1st in a 5-0 win.

  27. Bawsman,

Would I be correct in thinking that you would rather we had played our strongest eleven against ICT on Saturday?

Have your meal in town (loadsaplaces in the Merchant City) and then head back to the airport hotel – best of both worlds. I’m sure you will make the correct choice and have a great time, both at the match and for supper.
