Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

Berg: ” I know he’s suspended, but he’s always wanted to play at Murrayfield. And his granparents, parents, seven brothers and sisters and twelve cousins are all here.”

  2. I’m ambivalent rev this decision. It is entirely undeserved and while it will keep Lawwell happy I’m not sure it will be good for the team. I almost fear the consequences of winning through….

How will this affect the thinking around selling our few decent players.

Is it a delay? Is it likely to increase their value as we try to retain them for Maribor game? Or can we now just punt them as we have new funding in the pipeline?

  3. Sincere sympathies to Mr.Z, can you just imagine what we would be like if the shoe was on the other foot. I have never seen CQN as bleak as it was yesterday and never as carefree as it is today and all because of a silly administrative error.

Surely the Board will have to splash the cash, now that we are guaranteed 8 more European games. Everything that was wrong with the Manager & Team yesterday is still wrong today. We should at least make an attempt to get it right, please please buy a striker Peter.

I’ve had to explain that scenario to six different folk at work however your link sums it up:

“LW had to register their squad which would have a limited number of slots. A player serving a suspension for a red last season would need to take up one of these slots for the club to effectively suffer some kind of loss or sanction arising from the red card suspension. If this did not happen – and LW filled the allocated number of registered player slots on the squad sheet – then LW were yet to suffer consequences /loss/sanction for the player’s red card.”

  5. I just hope that Maribor are knackered after all those long european flights and with the long transcontinental flight to Scotland they’ll surely be there for the taking, saving Paul Lawell, sorry i meant Peter, having to spend some of our cash.

As you can probably tell from reading back, it’s keeping the Celtic fans very happy.

We all see it for the get out of jail free card but as a life is but a series of moments added together I’m enjoying this one…..

Big week coming up – signings, outgoings, incomings, rebellions, biscuit tins, formations, bonding, rebelling…….it’s not dull and as an entertainment business has me hooked.

Now show us a smile :)

  7. Why are there 5 lovely looking individuals draped in union jacks outside Glasgow City Chambers? Is it because of the Palestinian flag or is it a protest against UEFA (tee hee)

  8. Ronnie Deila must set about organising the team to be much more compact.

Even under Lenton I felt we played too far apart. No player should ever be without two or three options. One or two close,.one longer.

    Organisation is now key.

Also, it’s no coincidence that good players like izzaguirre and lustig look less good when the team isn’t properly organised.

I don’t want to add to the calls for Ronnies head but the shapelessness of the team concerned me. Two league games will offer the perfect chance to organise the team.

St Johnstone will smell blood. Weds is gonna be a hard hard game.

As for new signings right now we do need established talent with character, faces that the good squad players and young guys look at in the dressing room and think ‘there is a guy who’ll get us through’. Confidence and organisation with a bit of guile is the key for celtic.

We could do worse than look at how legia played pressing in packs, staying compact, breaking in numbers and getting in to shape quickly when it broke down.

    Mon the hoops

  9. Ironically I think this decision puts added pressure on a board that should already be creaking.

They have got until the transfer dealine next Weds to get some real quality into this team.

If £5M is a guaranteed minimum we will get, then this plus £2-4 Million addition funds should be made available to RD immediately.

Our hard won reputation is hanging by a shoogly nail, and another embarrassment will not be tolerated by the support.

Our board members are renumerated well, It’s time to earn it.

  18. Concentration should be completely focused on mending the sieve for the away leg. Keep that tight and we have a chance.

The money should be spent now. A few hours ago we had no guarantees, now we do, we should use it as a chance to improve the squad not bank in fear of not progressing into the CL – as that was off the table anyway.

  21. There’s no doubt that we will get another serious leathering if we don’t sort ourselves out before we face Maribor.

That must be obvious to all at Celtic. Cash must be invested in the team.

Surely the powers that be recognise this. If we put up a decent show and still go out, the support MAY forgive, but if it’s another appalling capitulation like Legia, then PL must go.

    Simples.

  22. A couple of wee questions for the “Sign somebody, anybody, now, desperadoes”.

Would you buy someone who is willing to come to Celtic, because Europa League football is guaranteed, and spend all your money now?

Would you wait to see if CL group participation is achieved and try to get a higher calibre of player in as they are willing to move to a “shop window” club?

Would you want RD to spend for the Maribor tie and spend again if we get through to the CL?

And those of you who used to say we were only looking for a £5m spend, what figure of expenditure are you looking for now?

    My answers are

No, unless it is an exceptionally good deal.

    Yes, definitely.

    Possibly, depends.

Total outlay of funds, if we get to CL, should not exceed £3m plus a fraction of whatever we bring in for FF or VVD or both. Figure rises to £7m or £10m if either or both go.
