Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round. Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray. Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.
Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England. They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.
If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.
Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

Think legias only hope of winning an appeal is for it to take place in Edinburgh.
I have been told that Ladbrokes are paying out on 3-0 Celtic win.
Anyone confirm?
LB
My head is still spinning
This has all hapened so fast
Only Celtic..
Do Maribor not have a fans ban for the home leg?
Are we away first?
First things first – Comedy value of this – I’m all for it.
Footballing merit – lucky as hell and completely undeserving.
Does this change anything?
NO
Football must be a million times better.
Management must also be a million times better
Support from the Custodians MUST now be forth-coming.
Keep our best players, sign enough to get us over the line or at best give us the best possible shot.
Maribor have never lost to a Scottish team in Europe and have beaten a few.
When lady luck falls in your lap you do not waste the opportunity.
I think to throw away this MASSIVE reprieve would be worse than the two matches we just lost.

Huns all laughing because we are still in the champions league, inside there are screaming haha giruy
…………………………………..
No on RM they weren’t, they were raging. I was following the thread on there with a massive grin on my face but it looks like it’s been taken down to avoid any further apoplexy in the hun ranks.
I’m sure Sally will have his say

CELTIC’S Champions League play-off rivals Maribor have been punished by UEFA for their fans’ racist behaviour.
The Slovenians must close a section of their stadium when the Hoops face them in the first leg of the Champions League play-off a week on Tuesday.
Maribor were ordered to shut down what is known as the Jug area of their ground after abuse during an earlier qualifier against Zrinjski, of Bosnia-Herzegovina,
UEFA’s disciplinary committee reacted to reports of racist incidents and imposed the one-game sanction.
In the the third stage, Maribor won 1-0 against Maccabi Tel Aviv and drew 2-2 in Israel. Now they take on the SPFL champions with crowd restrictions imposed on them.
Europe’s governing body is in the second season of a stricter regime of sanctions for racism incidents involving players, officials and fans.

with support like this, strange things can happen…

On a serious note, we simply cannot look this gift horse in the mouth. We simply have to get this one right, and if that means giving RD some cash then so be it.
Hugely jammy to get this reprieve, so let’s make the most of it.
Let’s be honest. Right now all our possible opponents would have been tough! Heavens, they probably all wanted us.
I don’t really see the point in beating them (although we always want to win every game we play) and then getting six embarrassing thrashings in the CL proper, just to accumulate another £14m that we won’t shttp://m.stv.tv/sport/football/clubs/celtic/285545-celtic-reinstated-in-champions-league-play-offs-after-legia-forfeit/pend. I’d much rather play a few games against lesser European teams in an attempt to build some much needed confidence and regain a little integrity.
Good morning CQNers

A very happy bunny today after all that gnashing of teeth yesterday.

Hail Hail
We are away to ICT on Sunday 16th August. Let’s hope our game at Maribor is on the Wednesday and not Tuesday.

Legia basis for appeal :
Legia official Dominik Ebebenge said: “This is unjust and completely disproportionate.
“There have been similar cases in the past which have not punished in this way. This was just a basic human error.

The challenge is never mind the law what is the right thing to do in the circumstances?
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Your words sound like those spoken by Ogilvie etc when allowing Oldco to participate in Europe.
===========
Ogilvie confused the right thing to do for Rangers rather than the right thing to do for sporting integrity.
Folk often justify the wrong decision by telling themselves it was the right one.
I think CO thought he was making the right decision for Scottish football and Rangers but the latter clouded his judgement.
The right thing to do often requires a sacrifice of self not a serving of it.

Get Ronny out the door quick
Put a cardboard cut out of Ron Atkinson in the dressingroom and pipe in some recordings from one of those “positive thinking” gurus/charlatans and you will get a better result
Think about it Peter
Surely Ally will be thrilled to know that the Scottish coefficient has just gotten a wee boost..?

Warsaw don’t have a Legia to stand on regarding any appeal
The boy should have been registered on the team lines to serve his suspension – it was their call
Have they never had anyone suspended before or have they constantly broken this rule?
Either way they are goosed!
For the next leg we need to get the best out of what we have – it is unlikely that we will sign anyone before the games are played – therefore we should think about the following team and system – away leg especially!
FF/CG
EA VVD/ML CM
AM LH NB/BK SJ IE
CMcG
LG
We really need to get a grip of the middle of the park to both protect our defence and set up our attacks

Oops! I don’t know what happened with my last post. It should have read:

I don’t really see the point in beating them (although we always want to win every game we play) and then getting six embarrassing thrashings in the CL proper, just to accumulate another £14m that we won’t spend. I’d much rather play a few games against lesser European teams in an attempt to build some much needed confidence and regain a little integrity.

Disagree. We have an opportunity standing at the gates of the champions league proper to invest, back the boss and allow him to ‘learn’ his trade at the top table. I fear for hammerings but we need to learn a way of coping against the big boys and no better time to start.
There are potentially a few twists and turns to play out now. I’d hope wednesday was a massive wake up call and we see a reaction. I want to see jus making a statement in the market and absolutely ham, meting St johnstone next wednesday for starters.

‘Sorry, we didnae mean it please let us back in ‘
Thank feck I’m not a deady bear…just imagine the anguish !!!
I would stick with ronnie…he has a 100% record in qualifying ties so far disposing of the icelandic and polish champions….couple of signings ,couple of injured players back and we will be celtic again.
Goodness me, Paul.
Maribor should be ‘slight favourites’?
I’ve always had you down as a glass half-full kind-a-guy, but now I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve been a bit miserly in my assessment … !
