Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

  1. Sorry, fecking phone.

I told you I already said we need to spend more wisely. A page or two ago, you might have missed it. The point is I’m agreeing with you!

MickTT, HH bruv. That’s a cracking seat you’ve given up for my boy. He’ll be able to hit Peter Lawwell square on the coupon with his half baked pie before he gets arrested.

We have the same reservations about our new coach.

Always the caveat………………Only two games, only two results…..O.K.,but the manner of the defeats was what,I feel, alarmed most of us.

The legendary and traditional Celtic fighting spirit ,particularly in Cups, was nowhere to be seen.

The Celtic team was simply not a team.

  4. Fraser Forster ………. thanks and all the best.

Come back for a round of applause any time.

  5. Dallas Dallas. We were giving a free out of jail card yesterday

    Today we handed it back

We have a striker policy of playing one guy who is not good enough then drop him for another non scoring striker then drop him and bring back the non scoring striker

We have a midfield that is not settled as we don’t have players good enough to claim a permanent place

Seems we have moved that policy to goalie now

Money won’t be spent AGM balance sheet will be great

We have a financial director ( who was brought into monktonhall colliery to cut cut cut before closure ) who background is to spend little and doesn’t understand what investment is and if he is not removed will take us down and down

Ps on Gerry whites Facebook now

  6. ACGR,

as I said previously I am not a big whisky drinker,

whats your view on it,and is there anything similar you would suggest trying,

by the way if its crap feel free to say so

NatKnow, drop me an email and I’ll send you a few pics of my new Linkwood. She’sa wee cracker. Not as strong as my last bottling but the sherry finish on a light speyside is a lot different from a normal 12 – 15 Y.O. linkwood.

But hey, it’s way way better than supporting any other team.

Sorry dude – I possibly jumped in midway through your convo with another poster. I agree with the point you are making about spending more wisely. It seems to me that many posters think that PL signs the players and that’s that. I’d be surprised if that were the case. In my experience any business making an big investment/spend would tend to require a number of people to sign that off. In our case I would expect the scouts, the manager and the suits to all sign off before a commitment was made. I may be wrong. The signings I mentioned are good examples of what I would consider poorly spend. Pukki and Gordon might come good but the other 2 are a waste of money – IMHO. Where we are likely to differ is on what we mean by “spending wisely” – how would you define that?

thanks :-) we need to move on, I really do think that we have the right team in place, the Hibs reaction to JC tells you all you need to know about typical Scottish footballers, get fit and if it means working till 4.00pm then grow up and accept that you cant spend the afternoon in Ladbrokes

  16. McGeady, Ki, Wanyama, Ledley, Hooper, K.Wilson, Watt and Forster cost a total of £9.5m with Celtic receiving a total of £49.5m in return.

gordybhoy64, I’ve yet to taste a Scottish single malt I would regard as crap. I’ve tasted some Japanese, welsh and Indian one’s I’d class in that bracket. Glenrothes is a good dram, I’ve got a couple in my collection and they never disappoint.

Maybe not as flavoursome as my beloved Islay’s or as grassy and sweet as the Spey drams I#, coming to love, but they’re worth buying and keeping as a back up.

Get some Islay’s and you’ll be sorted.

    In order:

    Ardbeg…………….New

Caol Isla………….Anything you can lay your wallet on

Laphroig………….10 Y.O. bog standard and Quarter Cask if you can get it

Port Ellen…………Anything you can lay your wallet on

Bruichladdich……Every release is a joy to taste.

Bowmore………….Not less than 12 Y.O unless cask strength

Lagavulin………….17 Pedro Jiminez finish if you can still find it.

    Also rans.

I’m not sure either. I don’t think any of us do. The current policy is confusing. I was thinking of this earlier. For how long and how much money do we need to bank for the PLC to feel confident?

In the fear of repeating my own thoughts of it, I’m not in the spend for spending’s sake but we do need to invest in a striker. The board has to accept that their business model is flawed in it’s current form.

I would think we are in a position to strengthen a key position whether it be paying the going rate outwith the big leagues or a jewel no-one has discovered, either way, if we have to pay a large fee, a one of key position purchase should not be outwith our reach.

  21. What are we to do ?

Why not be true to ourselves and play the game on our own terms.

Our fantastic stadium is now too big for our support.

Why not define a future that is not dependent on TV money

and concentrate on the match day experience for those of us who

want to go and support the Celtic.

And to hell with all the rest.

  22. I don’t know what is going on at Lennoxtown but to me it looks like the players were going through the motions on Wednesday, and that to me is shocking, the amount of stupid and misplaced passes was baffling.

Ronny needs to get his own players in, and as quickly as possible. I have no doubts that one of his primary objectives is to get more of the Celtic produced kids into the first team but they will definitely need older and wiser heads alongside so that they reach their true potential.

If there are issues about longer training hours ( I have no idea – just what I’ve read here) and some of the players don’t like it, then IMO, tough. I bet the ones coming through the development squad are delighted to train longer, and it is only to become Better technically and fitter. Too many players have it far too easy.
