Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

You may be correct, and if you are, it will be the quality we get, bang for buck, which will determine our season. I hope we get quality, PROVEN quality, not projects or hopeful punts.

  2. Neganon2

I think it’s far too early to sack Ronny. I reserve the right to change that if we keep repeating the poor shows against Legia but he needs time and investment to make his mark.

The players let us down more in the last 2 games – too many with a mind on moving or failing to respond to a regime change.

A manager who is at odds with the club philosophy will never be hired – whether in sport or biz so this lackey nonsense that gets trotted out is just that.

  3. Tom. Really??????

    Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahah.

    Good one.

Are you not paying attention either?

See the thing that bothers me too? It’s that we know they are waiting on the Hun. We all know it, after all we aided and abetted their so called survival. We still call them rangers etc. but you would think even if that was the strategy we would be building a team to wipe the floor with them.

But not us. We are intent on weakening and weakening.

Why you would almost think that celtic wanted to help the Hun be successful to stabilise their finances and the. Be back to the cosy sectarian fest of the old fit,. Where we can once again be dscriminated against.

But they are not that stupid. Right?

    Right??????

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.

God bless all those mourning today

  5. NegAnon – serious question:

Get rid of Deila – who do you want in instead?

Get rid of Lawwell – who would you like to replace him? Would this person have automatic seat on all the SFA and European groups and committees? Will they have the same contacts? Will Dermot Desmond tell the new guy to go and do things totally differently?

Or is it a complete structural change you want at Celtic? I’d be with you on that one. However if it is a complete structural change, say a fan buy out, do you envisage a much bigger spend on players year on year? If so are you confident we have the finances to spend more on the players and their wages (the more expensive a player, generally speaking, the bigger his wage)? Or is it that you would hire a better chief scout or revamp the scouting network (which I would like to see done myself – the evidence is that it isn’t working well enough just now)?

In short what are the answers to the difficulties we face and how is chasing Lawwell and Deila going to change any of that?

  6. A midfield shorn of the services of Brown, Forrest, Ledley and Samara’s and it is little wonder that the team is struggling and low in morale. Ronny has his work cut out to revive a team being dismantled in this fashion almost every season.

  7. What would some of you do if you found out PLs bonus was only based on commercial revenues and had zero basis in income from football operations eg transfers and CL prize money.

  8. neganon2- I suspect Forster wants to leave, (Van Dyke too)

If he wants to stay his agent will simply tell Lawwell. End of.

    That’s how it works.

  9. I was at Murrayfield on Wed and thought we were gash.

I also thought one or two players looked shall we say less

    Than 100% committed.

I shared these thoughts on Friday with a fellow worker

    On Thursday morning.

Fellow worker a season tkt holder knows a journalist

    Who basically follows Celtic everywhere.

He says players love Ronnie love his training love his

Methods its just not clicking yet.

Workmate said journalist friend is a lover of a deid team

And would have loved nothing more to report back

Disharmony in paradise but actually said it was as

Far from the actual truth could be.

We didn’t by Balde, Pukki and Derk as squad players……. Some signings work out, some don’t……. So far these 3 haven’t ‘shone’.

  12. Big wavey. Forgive me but you are still clinging on to the hope that celtic actually care about football results.

    They couldn’t care less.

So when marinor pump us what then?

Ronny thinks he is here to do a job. But he is so grateful to do the job he will never stand up to lawwell. Lawwell knows this and it’s why he wanted him in the first place. Power and control.

So he is a patsy but he just doesn’t know it yet.

He must go and go quickly. But so must lawwell and if at all possible the only millionaire football owner to scrape a club for money.

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

I’d sack him, that’s what I’d do as he is solely responsible for the downsizing of the football club. Look no further than the sale of FF, instead of enhancing the playing squad after our CL reprieve he sells our best and biggest asset.

When I said I believe Celtic will spend this window, I was voicing my opinion based on my weighing up of the current situation.

“He cannot be held up as an example for giving a floundering manager excessive time”

What would you consider ‘excessive time’?

  17. NegAnon -just read the last post of yours there – we are intent on weakening and weakening? Seriously? You believe that?

Wanyama, Forster, Hooper – all brought in under the buy young and low, sell high scheme (I said last night I agree broadly with this but we are not keeping them long enough and have to spend more on keeping them so we get more of their best years before selling them on, if they want to stay that is) – was Lawwell just very unlucky when these players came in and along with the rest of the assembled team got to the last 16 of the CL for only the second time in the modern era?

The strategy we are using may be right or wrong – but as far as I can see from the outside looking in, same as yourself, it is aimed at living within our means while delivering a capable football team. We might not have got it right and there may well be a much better strategy out there, but to suggest that we are deliberately ‘weakening’ is verging on conspiracy. Maybe Pete L is a Sevco agent?

I’m curious as to why you think we are deliberately weakening the team.

    Where is Boruc??

Is he still at Southampton ??

Puzzled that Southampton are buying a keeper Shen they’ve sold so many outfield players

Delighted with the £10m fir FF ..I was never really convinced by him …then again I ken nothing

  19. Neganon

It’s absolutely understandable that you take that viewpoint, and 99 times from 100 I agree with your take, but given the unrest on Wed, and the anti PL chants, I simply cannot believe he will let this reprieve pass without capitalising on it. Whilst he may have a different set of hopes and dreams than the average Bhoy, I think he’d need to be bloody stupid to fail to act quickly in the transfer market, and I do not believe he is that.

If he has any clue at all to what is in store for him should we get thumped again, which will be major unrest, and further dwindling attendances, hence much reduced income, then he is indeed stupid.

  20. Ah goldstar10. The old they want to leave nonsense. I watched an interview with Korean last night on a player who allegedly wants to leave southhampton.. He basically said he isn’t leaving and he will turn up for work and get on with it.

This bolloks so regularly trotted out is part of the losers charter that many of you sign up for.

You are making excuses for failure. They are pathetic excuses and they justify the unjustifiable actions of the club.

You are simply helping outer decline.

Robertressel, apologies for butting in, is selling FF before a CL group qualification game not deliberately weakening the team, if he stayed for the qualifiers he’d miss 1 Southampton game. Intend to keep my nose out now.

  23. Neganon2

I don’t really know how to respond to that one mate.

Basically everybody at the top must go as we don’t care about football results anymore ?

  24. Twists and turns. Have a look at the evidence already before your eyes.where is our focus? Why it’s on selling our best players? It hasn’t changed since yesterday’s good fortune.

You are also labouring under the misapprehension that we want to be a football team and that lawwell crass about what we think.

You are wrong on both counts.

    SRS

IMO Deila is out his depth ….I don’t think we can realistically sack him now …however …what if we get stuffed by Maribor in similar fashion as Legia……start poorly in the league

What to do then ….his long ?

Difficult question which can only be answered in time and circumstance

  27. Forster leaving is another example of letting a player go too early. That said, as pointed out above he’s just spent significant time in the England Squad listening to tales of how wonderful life is for a premiership fitba player and he has probably also doubled his wages, enhanced his chances of a game for England (lucky him) so it becomes really difficult to keep the guy.

If serious money isn’t spent this window on the back of this and in a crucial ‘transition’ phase then I would say the questions raised by some become much more relevant.

  28. Big wavey. Correct. You got it.

We are completely and hopelessly divided. Our owners etc just want to milk the support. They have stopped all pretence about it now because they think we are stupid.

  30. As ever following Celtic is the ultimate Roller Coaster. The despair & anger after Wed.night, and yesterday’s feeling that we had awoken from a nightmare. So Wed. night at Murrayfield never happened it was a bad dream and Celtic as expected have won through to final round of Champion League, at worse we have group stages of Europa League so all is well in the world.

In reality we have huge problems, we have a rookie Manager at this level of the game, who messed up big time against Legia, not writing him off but he needs to immediately up his game. Our squad seem lacking in form, motivation and spirit, and are in desperate need of quality reinforcements. I’m not overly bothered by prospect of Gordon taking over from FF (though I may live to regret that statement) but if Celtic don’t spend the FF money on strengthening the squad, I’m applying to join the NegAnon/PFAyr/KevJungle clique.

  31. Robertressell did t we say that last season and the season before that. Will we ever learn? Perhaps we are just stupid after all. I know I was for buying a season book that I now have no intention of using.
