Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

    Just to clarify:

Dermot Desmond is paid the standard fee of £25,000 for his role as a non-exec director of Celtic.

He also owns a large chunk of shares as follows:

32.7 million ordinary shares – 34.5% of this class – which are voting shares and historically pay no dividend

8 million Convertible Preferred Ordinary shares – 58% of this class – which are voting shares and which no longer pay a dividend

and 5.1 million Convertible Cumulative Preference shares – 34% of this class – which are non-voting and pay a dividend each year of 6% of their 60p coupon value.

Last year the club paid £527,000 to holders of these shares, of which Desmond would have received about £180K.

There is a dividend reinvestment scheme – a so called Scrip scheme – whereby holders of this class of share can elect to receive ordinary shares in the business in lieu of a dividend. Desmond elects to take the cash as do most the holders of these shares.

Fag packet, his total investment in Celtic to date is in the order of £20M via the 4 share issues over the past 20 years, and he owns around 37% of the total voting shares.

In terms of return on investment, he gets £200k each year from that £20M, and a free padded seat.

Still look back fondly on my time as a guest on the Uni bus at a time where we were more united with the team and corporate issues were less relevant. However one thing hasn’t changed, discontent with the board on certain matters.

Your former neighbour and I along with our respective sons, still have season tickets but I don’t go to away games now.

However, my son is desparate to go to one, so hopefully this season. He’s annoyed I never took the chance to get tickets in with the Green Brigade when offered them, last wednesday.

    Reading wiki about Makienok:

Brøndby accepted an €3.8M offer from a Russian club on the young forward. Makienok reportedly said that ‘Money isn’t everything’ and decided to stay. According to multiple Danish newspapers the forward turned down a weekly salary of €34K !

  8. The glorious balance sheet,

Good luck to Tony Watt, Fraser and Virgil when a deal is done in the window.

What happens when Lawwell has no players left to sell. I don’t see a queue for Dirk, Pukki, Balde, Stokes and others.

For others such a Broonie, Lustig, Ambrose they will discover how Sammi feels with no contract offer and deemed to be surplus to requirements.

This is Lawwells approach which has seen Celtic weakened last season and further again this season. We don’t have the pretence of coming out of the transfer window stronger than the last one. Those words are certainly hollow now.

Lawwell is destroying our club with his one dimensional bean counter approach.

Our current forward line is the worst Celtic attack since the Andy Walker, Charlie Nicholas mark 2, Willie Falconer permutation that started the 1994/95 season at Hampden.

  11. If you are correct then you pick out the ringleader and sell him to say Millwall.

However, it takes 12 to 18 months to build a new team nowadays , and Ronnie is asking a bunch if ghuys settled in their ways to change , so as a team we are likely to be disjointed and with individuals uncertain whether to stick or bust on the pitch. From the sidelines , sometimes this comes over as lack of effort etc….. Still not managed to see fitba this season , so just putting forward an alternative view.

Here’s wan fur ye…..Say ye were an up and coming manager, a student of the game, a very intelligent deep thinking logical man and very well thought of in the Fitba circles. Ye git a chance to manage one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Ye try to instill yer vision intae your new squad but some of the squad dinnae like change. Said some of the squad are awe buddies and senior members. Said buddies are very influential to the young pups and plant their evil seed. New manager watches his new squad crumble to lower opposition (Nae offence Mr Z), twice in their first competitive outing. A wan aff wid be accepted but no twice. It looks to you like some of the squad irnae trying a jot and unrest vibrates around the dressing room.

    ……………………………………

Temporarily, they have you over a barrel so initially you have to go with the flow. So you revert to the way things were done previously in order to try to negotiate the Maribor games and once those games have been concluded, hopefully with a successful outcome, you then start to make gradual change and make sure that you get rid of each player who caused you problems and you do it in such a way that everyone knows why you got rid of them and you do it when they are in a position of weakness – just like they did to you.

You also learn a lesson for yourself, that your changes should have been gradual in the first place especially when the team didn’t need a radical overhaul, just a few changes before you started to subtly alter the style of play.

Don’t care about Rangers Burnley. Celtic matter. You keep asking who we should sign. That is up to the manager. HH.

Cheers for that. Looks very suspect to me that Uefa found a loophole to punt them out. The real reasons look more sinister. I don’t think Sion were punted as quickly and Uefa knew after the first leg they were getting emptied out. The draw was even made and Celtic weren’t in the correct seeding for that.

I just hope that the suggestion senior Celtic figures bet on Legia are wide of the mark or we have more serious problems than I thought at the club.

    The battered bunnet,

How much does Dermot get in the event of a sale and how much does he earn off being the owner in other business dealings.

What of other investors like the chap on newsnow yesterday reported to have 7%? Is he interested in taking the same small dividend and blue chip kudos that goes with having Celtic on his portfolio or is he in it for something else?

I think Lustig signed a new contract in the close season. Otherwise I agree with everything that you`ve said.

Samaras and Ledley were not offered new contracts, despite the smokescreen propaganda issued at intermittent intervals in the months before they left. Commons will not be offered a new contract.

Getting the wage bill down rather than improving the team seems to be the driving force at Celtic nowadays.

Have to disagree again. We need around 6 players. 4 first team and 2 squad players for now. Berget may already be one of those players. 5 still to come in. The core of the side is there. Brown and Forrest on the way back. The ringleader if such a thing exists should be dropped and punted pronto. The rest will fall into line. Moyes failing at Man Utd was due to a similar reason. In my opinion if a manager joins a team and they are under performing an experienced big name gets shown the door. The rest bottle it. If I were Moyes Rooney would have been emptied. An I’m the boss moment. Look at Strachan and his method after Artmedia. Experienced players were got shot of as soon as possible. He went on to win 3 titles. The manager MUST be in charge. Someone will have to be sacrificed to bring the rest into line. In my opinion after the last 2 games nobody is guaranteed to stay. Let the man do his job and build his team.
