Maribor, St Johnstone and resolving Murrayfield

565

Did you watch the European Super Cup from Cardiff last night?  Europa League champions Sevilla lost out to Real Madrid but the team from Andalucía got there after beating Maribor 4-3 on aggregate.  The Slovenian’s narrow defeat deserves some context: Sevilla also eliminated Real Betis, Porto, Valencia and Benfica.

Make no mistake, we’re up against a decent European team.  More on them later in the week.

Tonight it’s St Johnstone, who, like Celtic, have sharpened their wits with European football in recent weeks, and well as enjoying an opening day win in Dingwall at the weekend.  They have lost their talisman, Stevie May, which is a pity, as I would like to see the Celtic defence stretched as much as possible this week, but they will be as ready as any domestic opponent we could face at the moment.

Ronny Deila has two short games to sort out game plan, shape, partnerships and team spirit, before travelling to Slovenia.  It doesn’t need to be right for tonight, but signs of considerable progress on the Murrayfield debacle is needed.

The Kano Foundation are one of the greatest initiatives from any group of football fans I’ve heard about.  They bring the Celtic experience to childrens’ charities and groups, truly phenomenal work.  The Foundation was founded in the wake of the Bring Martin Home campaign, which brought our very own Kano home from life in a hospital bed.

You’ll see the volunteers outside Celtic Park before kick-off on Saturday with buckets, so make sure you bring something for them.

Originally I had sympathy and agreed it was probably incompetence but the actions and claims since then hardened my attitude and finally the tabloid report today confirmed for me they cheated.

By definition, if they did not adhere to the rules they cheated whether that was by ignorance or deliberate. Today’s twist is evidence of deliberate, they were made aware of the players concerns by the player and dismissed him without even checking that’s enough for me.

Honest mistakes, remind me what we know about them.

    I would have to disagree.

My view is that their are significant differences at a tactical level.

    DD sets the strategy.

No more cash calls from the club.

Uses a bonus culture to energise the executive level at CP.

PL or at least the latest business re-incarnation of PL is using one of many business plans to keep the Irish Raj sweet and his bonus assured.

We have had a number over the years:

MoneyBall 1 — The WGS clear out of the deadwood and looking further afield for talent.

MoneyBall 2 — Targeting Bosmans and young U23 foreign talent, only 50% effective.

MoneyBall 3 — JP inspired foreign scouting using trusted agents to bring in growth talent.

MoneyBall 4 — S + B squad restructuring and wage downsizing with a technocratic coach.

For me PL is now in the lead.

DD has taken his eye of the ball and could not deliver a favoured / Club legend coach to take over from NL. He tried hard enough but in the end only PL’s sweat the assets candidate was left standing.

All throughout the history of CQN P67 has delivered a regular series of posts bemoaning the waste and non delivery of value from the club’s football programme. I have always had the opinion that these missives are very close to the thinking of some elements within the club including PL.

With no TFOD2 and the shambles of last summer still raw I think PL has taken the opportunity of NL leaving and no credible candidate to stand for the managers role to re-shape the club in his second class property bean counter image.

I think DD will not be very happy if the club falters over the next 12 months.

If you want to sell, you need to have the club looking healthy and vibrant.

We are neither at the moment.

I think there are strains at the top.

Big issue for me is that we do not have a c/man worthy of the role.

No more ménage a trois as in times past — now more a straight fight.

As for PL’s attempts to cut the football programme in half.

Reminds me about the old joke about marketing — it is only 50% effective.

The problem is we do not know what half.

Same I fear with our football budget.

  4. UEFA have confirmed to Celtic that should we decide we don’t want to take Legia’s place in the Champions League, Maribor get a bye and we’d be out of both competitions. Legia are in the Europa and are staying there. There’s no mechanism to reverse the decision between the two clubs and Legia are at it.

The appeal is a separate matter.

There’s a lot that’s not been made public yet and Celtic are waiting on the right time to have their say.

    JFH,

There are plenty more leagues with less income and would probably prefer to be in our setup, paupers league is a myth, paupers compared to the big leagues, yes but there are plenty of pauper leagues in fact our next euro opponents come from a poorer league and we are still making excuses.

    Hope you’re well.

There is no such thing as complete safety at any public event.

SAGs exist to make a series of risk assessments based on the advice of their standing delegates (loved typing that).

If absolute safety was the aim, then such events and Leeds, Reading, TinthePark and Glastonbury just would not be permitted at all.

As you know, the old barriers were meant for leaning on, but in many grounds acted as a protective barrier for some. Stood on the Kop at Anfield with my sons and Mrs RWE years ago, and an old guy told Mrs RWE to stand in front of the barrier and not lean on it, because he knew what the crush was going to be like.

Safety measures at any event are a trade off between known risks and spectator enjoyment.

I suspect that the issue at Celtic Park is more to do with Police concerns over their control of and access to sections 110 & 111, than purely safety matters in a general sense. The SAG and the Council feel trapped by this dilemma, which implies that they want to grant this variation to the Safety Certificate, but faced with stiff Police objections, have simply punted on 1st down.

The Celtic statement today is a welcome departure from their usual PR paralysis on important fan based issues. They have been listening to the fans and working to introduce the standing area.

    HH

    ———————————————————————–

It will be interesting to see a written statement from the SAG explaiing their decision. However, one thing is absolute – if this were a matter for the Scottish Government, then that should have been highlighted by SAG at the very first meeting on the issue 2.5 years ago. A lot of time and money has been wasted attempting to satisfy their demands. Celtic should bill them for it.

You talk about a paupers league but it is a league where the support spend the best part of £45mill to give PL his bonus.

And then you have the fact that PL treats that support — who put in £45mill every year — as cash cows and trouser any transfer fees that the squad — that the support built — can be milked for?

If the support don’t put in £45mill then we are in trouble.

That is why we / they should not be taken for granted by PL and his bonus fetish.

Once the magic fails it will be carnage.

The love affair between the support and club is at breaking point.

In terms of Griffiths it appears Deila doesn’t like him as a player and/or his attitude but I wouldn’t be quick to punt him out the door:

    2006–2009 Livingston 47 (22)

    2009–2011 Dundee 47 (21)

You watched a drill involving players passing to other players in the team…..and you saw no element of team work??

You watched a passing drill but saw no pass & move, in the fullness of a complete training session?? Were the players stapled in place? Did the ball hit off them? How did they manage to remain motionless and yet complete a pass?

I have never seen a Lennoxtown training session but I’d say your observations are flawed and the deductions you derive from them are consequently damaged.

The only query I have is, why you would trust your own observation, having never played the game or studied coaching? As you repeatedly say that 3 cousins of yours work with our bhoys, are they guilty of the same reliance on motionless footballers? That defect in their thinking could explain why they keep feeding you false information about the promise of such as Adam Virgo, Marc Millar, Stephen O’Donnell and Amido Balde.

Anyway, in deference to your own area of expertise, are any of our players showing promise as song & dance men?
