Maribor, St Johnstone and resolving Murrayfield

565

Did you watch the European Super Cup from Cardiff last night?  Europa League champions Sevilla lost out to Real Madrid but the team from Andalucía got there after beating Maribor 4-3 on aggregate.  The Slovenian’s narrow defeat deserves some context: Sevilla also eliminated Real Betis, Porto, Valencia and Benfica.

Make no mistake, we’re up against a decent European team.  More on them later in the week.

Tonight it’s St Johnstone, who, like Celtic, have sharpened their wits with European football in recent weeks, and well as enjoying an opening day win in Dingwall at the weekend.  They have lost their talisman, Stevie May, which is a pity, as I would like to see the Celtic defence stretched as much as possible this week, but they will be as ready as any domestic opponent we could face at the moment.

Ronny Deila has two short games to sort out game plan, shape, partnerships and team spirit, before travelling to Slovenia.  It doesn’t need to be right for tonight, but signs of considerable progress on the Murrayfield debacle is needed.

The Kano Foundation are one of the greatest initiatives from any group of football fans I’ve heard about.  They bring the Celtic experience to childrens’ charities and groups, truly phenomenal work.  The Foundation was founded in the wake of the Bring Martin Home campaign, which brought our very own Kano home from life in a hospital bed.

You’ll see the volunteers outside Celtic Park before kick-off on Saturday with buckets, so make sure you bring something for them.

Madmitch. Thanks for your reply but I do not recognise the Celtic you write of but if our CEO trousers the transfer monies I would think the board would have something to say about that. H.H.

No LG — well there goes my team selection.

Given what we have got he is the most credible and effective No. 9 we have.

Interesting to see who gets the gig tonight.

TP would my next choice — for his energy and nuisance factor.

They certainly do. I don;t think he will go anywhere. We have a player with little sell on value and no desire to go anywhere.

He will sit and collect his wages.

A mate of mine at work met him at ER on Saturday and he said a move to ER is unlikely on loan due to his wages.

He does not want to go down South again because he has young children here and missed them when he was in Wolverhampton.

There is a player there and the naughty step will only last so long. He is making very good cash and will not be happy not playing but will just continue to collect his wage.

My thoughts are you play him as he is a threat in front of goal especially in our league.

What we are possibly doing here is handicapping the team due to his poor attitude or his off field antics which is fine but it’s results that matter. If Ronny doesn’t get one tonight and Griffith’s isn’t in the squad and Stokes doesn;t play then questions are likely to be asked.

Initially he needs to get results. You don;t have to like the Bhoys getting them but it is a strange decision for me this early if true. He doesn;t strike me as a non trier. I have said before that non triers can;t be tolerated.

Hope Ronny gets it right tonight because he needs the win.

As a supporter of big Peter I fail to see what upsets some Celtic fans our CEO works under the financial restrictions of a club operating in the SPL a paupers league. Now we are operating a system of bringing in players improving them and selling at a profit and currently the club is financialy secure.I accept when following this policy every player we sign is unlikely to be a success Balde Boerichter and Pukki but surely this is going to happen with some players and it could said the scouting dept.and our last manager are as responsible for the signing of these three players.Lennie left Celtic fairly suddenly and Peter brought in Rony and JC now these two are trying to make big changes to our club and this will take time which surely every new manager should be allowed. So in my opinion our CEO is doing a fine job and yes he earns a large annual income but obviously our board feel he is worth it.H.H.

I don’t know if you caught it or not.

A few days ago I posted an admittedly jaundiced summation of Celtic’s progress, or lack of it, under PL’s stewardship.

Mad Mitch. Why do you say we are not healthy ? I think vibrant is open to opinion I would genuinely like to understand what you think Peter should be doing differently ? H.H.

I will tell you why we are not healthy.

At a time when we should be hoovering up domestic trophies we are not.

At a time when THEY are at rock bottom all should be sweetness and light at all levels at Celtic Park.

At a time when Board should be making sure that the decade of domestic dominance is secured, they are not.

Instead they seem hellbent on pursuing a policy of just doing enough to get by.

Does anyone honestly believe the guff, that come next summer they will lash out to ensure superiority over the resurrected THEM.

Never in a pig’s pudenda. To even dream of doing so would mean that we were so far aheaad of THEM that punters would lose interest.

  19. This is my vision of the comments circa 1994. Celtic are in turmoil ( like now according to some posters on here too numerous to mention) In the Daily Record it is claimed a shifty character, not married, from Canada, is considering a take over of Celtic. Later in the afternoon comments start appearing on CQN. ‘ chase him he’s a chancer, share issue who is he kidding, let’s stick with who we know.’ ‘ I believe he travelled first class, get to the car park and tell him where to go ( Canada). What is he going to do with the money? I can only guess.’ ‘I saw that posh git David Low is getting involved, there must be money in this fiasco , he wants Oor money, he can do one,’ ‘ Did this chancer fae Canada, not rip aff fans showing Selick games, ahm sure I read it somewhere,’ now Dempsey is getting involved, this is getting worser,’ How much is Dempsey getting paid?’ ‘Hearing that John Keane, a carpet fitter is getting involved, this going to end in tears, mark my words,… I dinnna go to the games any mare, the team is crap, I have watched Celtic for then last 50 years, enough is enough ‘ look at the Huns, they lucky basturts have Murray who is throwing money at them, and what do we rustle up, a clown from Canada,’
